Also football success the next 3-4 years would pay for the rest.
I know this is the basketball forum and I love what tom Allen has done with the football program and did deserve a raise because our program has been trash since forever but am I the only one who is concerned about the fact we still haven't won a bowl game and alot of things fell our way to have a good season last year? I am expecting to be relatively disappointed this season and won't be one bit surprised.

You shouldn’t be surprised at all. I think we got a pretty good look at what to expect watching the bowl game.

I don’t think you can continue to bring in players barley recruited and make that a consistent winner. This has been a special group but he needs to start bringing in higher rated recruits to maintain anything good

Thanks glad I am not the only one. Lots to be concerned with but some optimism especially from where we came from. But that bowl game against a team we clearly should have beaten was bad. Pen st win was lucky. I watched every game and have concerns that some fans may be let down. I thought we would be pretty good in basketball but look how that turned out lol

I expected to be disappointed in 2020 after the success we had in 2019. I don't think we'll beat Penn State or Michigan this time around, but maybe we get Iowa or Minnesota instead. I guess at some point, we'll have another season that we just aren't satisfied with for one reason or another.

This raise will keep other football programs from trying to steal Allen away

Yeah I agree. Relatively young, very quick turnarounds at both stops, good on the transfer market but immediately a good recruiter of HSers at Arkansas, where that’s probably a better option than it is at Nevada. He employed Jordan Sperber, the Hoop Vision guy, at Nevada.
His pattern at both stops: massive improvement in year one from the recently established historical level of the program, then year two is another step up.

But he’s “weird!” Can’t have a guy who’s weird be our head coach even if he could take us top 10 in a few years.

The bowl game was a disaster, but Tuttle was hurt and we didn’t have Penix. Of course, Penix is injury prone so that’s still a concern with him. I’m not sure we’re top 15 or 20 material in a full season, but I’m optimistic we can be an 8 or 9 win team. We’ll get a good idea of where we stand early on.

You know I get that we want to get better, but historically I don’t think we’ve had anything this special with our football team.  I understand that we need higher rated recruits to put us over the edge but at the same time this is really the first year that high level out of state recruits  would even hear or consider our program. I get we need to but don’t be surprised if it takes a couple more years.  Maybe we can get one or two top 100 but I wouldn’t expect it this year.

The more I think about it we need instant impact at this point and with the transfer deal likely in place we need a coach who can bring in impact players via transfer immediately. Who is that? Thad been out of coaching and belein. Who can bring us guys cause I feel alot of our guys will transfer if a change is made. but perhaps not

Think Beard would be good here but don’t think he would consider it

You're not alone. I think what Allen has accomplished is special by IU football standards but I also feel like a lot of things went our way for that to happen. I guess my stance is cautiously excited for this season. Regardless if he can duplicate this past season or not we are still way ahead of where we used to be especially from a consistency standpoint. I think the raise was deserved but I also agree I think some fans may be setting themselves up for disappointment this year. We'll find out in a few months.

Since you asked :)

Agree on your "no chance" list. So moving on...

Beilein & Matta seem the most likely- need to be vetted for ability and drive. I say proceed with extreme caution, but proceed. Any red flags should eliminate them, IU can't afford to find out Beliein has lost the fire in his belly 2 years down the road or have Matta tapping out because of his back after a couple of seasons. Either would be devastating.

I have stated before that I can't imagine why Drew would want to move, BUT fine with kicking the tires. Still he isn't a magician. Took a good while to get things rolling in Waco. IU should be a faster turn-around but not sure it's fair to expect a dramatic turn.

Similar feel on Beard & Mack. Sadly, IU doesn't offer much over current jobs without a lot of grunt work first to return the shine.

Oats is the most interesting to me for personal reasons and that he is young and has some results to evaluate. Seems like a winner on the trajectory for big things.

Our roster isn't thread bare in talent by any means and those Davis Brothers would look pretty good in Hoosier uniforms.

Mack may know the shits hitting the fan at U of 6 and wants out. I'd be fine with that scenario.

I do think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves with the lists. I said I knew of calls being made which is essentially saying Dolson is doing his due diligence. I guess this is also a worthy topic on a message board so carry on...I have zero info about a realistic list outside of the speculative/logical options I've seen posted here

So even though we aren’t sure of the exact list of candidates, is it indeed safe to say Archie will be gone at seasons end, or is even that still up in the air? Thanks

Fantastic coach.  I would love him as coach.   I think no one is mentioning him because he got taken home, county roads.   He was born in Morgantown,  transferred and played for West Virginia.   I think he is home until retirement.

Good coach.  Don't know how clean of a program he runs -- simply saying I don't know, just that there have been signs it's not but definitely not proof.  I know that at Cincinnati he was known for never having players graduate and that he used the Michael Beasley potential recruitment to leverage a coaching gig at Kansas State and then left before Beasley arrived.

But X's and O's and getting guys to fit his system.....very, very good.
