General Coach Candidate News

Although Jeff Goodman is not our favorite person, he said something very interesting last night. He is typically not someone to withhold a name or information as we all know. If he is able to say who it is, he will. Last night:

”For the IU job, my sources say it’s Ben McCollum, then Brownell, and then there’s a third candidate.”

Seemed super strange that he didn’t offer a name or information on that third name, and Dauster didn’t push him on it. To me, it seems like he knows there is another person on the table and has shared it with Dauster but isn’t ready to put it out there for whatever reason. Just a little out of character for Goodman, and you would expect Dauster to question who the third name is since that was the context of the conversation.

I would add though that he said that person was third on our list.

Admittedly, I only came to BTB in 2021 - I was a peegs guy for looong time before that, so I'm definitely one of the new guys here. I was one of the many people who came for the last coaching search and because peegs have zero real info regarding the actual search (and it sounds like little has changed this time around).

Can anyone explain to me why there would be so much subterfuge on IU's part? I mean, I hear some of the craziest stories of distraction - things that would be almost CIA-worthy. I understand that some of it is jokes, but I think a lot of it is actually serious. Why would Dolson need to work so hard to fool people and send them in the wrong direction?

I can understand his reluctance to publicize certain details of the search, and he's doing a good job of keeping details to himself and his circle, but what does he actually gain by sending out even a fourth of the false flags that people are proposing?

Don't get me wrong - I find this board loads of fun and I've been reading it a lot. I guess a big part of me is just baffled by some of misdirection theorized by people here. It would only seem necessary in a Robert Ludlum novel. LOL

I think some of these things come from agents of potential candidates. The McCollum tweet the other night was from his side to gauge our interest since the Iowa job was opening up.

When he lets Talia break the Stevens news it’s going to show he does have a heart.

To clarify since the tweet about Brad at the game was from a “ Talia”—It wasn’t Goodman’s daughter—different Talia.  Covers Florida.

Chris, did we get confirmation on that coming from McCollum side?

There's a couple schools of thought on why this would happen:

1) afraid of what happened last time - too many chefs.

2) no real advantage to making it public - looks bad when people say no and fans overreacting to every back and forth can make fanbase look manic

3) part of negotiations are salary - better off doing that in a vacuum so you don't get into a long back and forth. Or in some cases you don't want people to know who and how much your other offers are for.

4) Other party wants it that way for whatever reason

Note: i don't think IU is actively sending out misinformation but when no information is getting out people present speculation as fact sometimes

I hope this is over next week. If the coach is not announced and the portal opens can someone on the current staff offer players a scholarship. Another way of putting this is couldn’t the new coach being busy in the tournament let it be know that he is keeping one of the current staff and IU could make offers to players in the portal .
