General Coach Candidate News

ESPN called Tom Crean a brilliant hire.  Archie was hailed as a grand slam home run.  CBS said they expected multiple FFs coming our way soon.

Bottom line, if the media likes the hire you know we screwed up.

The media also hated the Woodson hire and made fun of it though too. So arguably, they got that right. Think everyone just stinks at knowing how a coach will turn out

McCollum would be so underwhelming. I’ve been waiting my whole life for IU to be good. I don’t want to wait yet again for another coach to come in and take several years to try to figure things out. Shades of “don’t worry, it takes four years to learn the packline defense.”

Exactly how many years did it take McCollum to figure out D1 from D2?

I want to believe the insiders here, and hope they keep posting, but I think Goodman's track record on searches recently is stronger.

So until proven otherwise, I think this is probably a pretty good, if disappointing/depressing, view of where things stand.

The above having been said, I will also say that Goodman's tweet is once again kind of vague about what's sourced and what isn't.

The favorable interpretation - Jeff heard from an agent that a guy who clearly would be down our list was just contacted for the first time by IU. This leads him to conclude that Drew, Otz, etc., are out if we're only now reaching out to 3rd tier candidate.

The less favorable interpretation- Jeff knows first hand that Drew, Brad, and Otz are all out, since he's close to all of them.

My intuition is #2, but my heart hopes it's #1.

The only people that didn't hate that hire were his buddies and the posters on this board that gaslit themselves into thinking it wasn't an awful hire.

Honestly…this is what worries me about Woodson. The “maybe I’m retiring too soon “ comments after yesterday’s game. I know I mentioned this on the board last week…but each win empowers Woodson…he doesn’t want to leave. A couple wins in the tourney and who knows, maybe we’re stuck with him. It probably won’t happen…but the thought will be in the back of my mind… until he finally packs up his office and walks out the door.

My guess is he and IU signed an agreement already otherwise Dolson wouldn't have released that announcement. Just my guess.

Chris007 has mentioned the knowledge and inside info from Jerry and RTZ and some of the best out there.  I choose to be patient and move forward with Steven’s until any of those 3 say something otherwise. Jmo

Been quiet on that front...

I should have clarified, it was Goodman’s 3rd endorsement of a coach, TJ O, Drew and now Beard

I don’t know how long Drew convos were this time or if it was an immediate no, but TJO I don’t think was that.  I would be willing to bet the names you are hearing today are the names that came back from the search committee as being interested or not if it’s x coach is in or out. I just heard names for the first time beyond Beard yesterday at the game beyond the “it would be great if”.

Beard I heard because of the amount of work supposedly being done.  I never took it more than anything beyond they wanted to feel good about their decision if it went that way, and not bow to pressure.  New era.  Cignetti showed the importance of hope and winning.  That’s what will drive this search it sure sounds like.  Not key admin or the loudest 5-10%.  If football can drive what it did?  They know what basketball will do.  Winning pays.  Losing costs buyouts.  Morals are not a currency that has paid the bills.  The people they would lose would be minimal compared to the upside of winning.

Brownell is not out of the running in the same way Beard is not out of the running. They want the job and haven't said no. Means nothing at this point in the search. Could it be either of them? Sure. Likely is not, we are going to hear a bunch more agent driven nonsense before this over. It really has not even started yet since we are obviously targeting sitting head coaches who are still playing basketball. I don't expect anything concrete until after conference tourneys at the absolute earliest, and only if we are gonna hire a cat not in the NCAAs.

I agree.  All of those coaches are getting ready for the tournament.  Would any of them, or their agents actually show any interest in taking another job at this time?  I'm guessing even if they are interested, if asked if they would take another job, they would all say "not interested, I'm with my team."

He had a great first year at Drake, definitely. Drake wasn’t exactly in the dumpster when he took it over, and he benefited from continuity by bringing over many of his players. IU will basically have an empty roster heading into the transfer portal. Can be navigate the portal to build a team on the fly that can compete in the Big 10 next season?

If IU hired Brownell they'd just be telling us to spend our time and energy elsewhere, because they don't want the program to actually win.

They told us that when they hired Mike Woodson. This would just be doubling down and leaving no doubt.

I wouldn’t go that far either.  I think it shows they felt that was the best option to win within their current situation.  You have 30 years of inconsistency in this fishbowl.  Nothing but failures.  Many coaches have zero ambition if they are ultra successful to come here.  If it was Duke or Kentucky after 10 years down?  They could still get someone.  30 years of mediocrity.  Someone is going to have to win to make Indiana what you, I, and others here feel Indiana is.  Outside perception just is not that.

To answer that question, it would have to be seen.  But I do question your take on the take on Drake…his continuity is with D2 players.  And if it were just continuity, MVC teams would have caught up by the end of the year.
