Wilkerson was a 2 guard and the point about throwing Magic out there is that 6’9” guys can play guard whether they are 6’3” or 6’9”. Yep. That is your point. My point is that Indiana probably will not be in the top few of the B1G at the end of the season...will not go far in the NCAAT with the dearth of experience at the 6th and 7th players coming off of the bench to take the point or the 2/3/4. It is not about whether they can play the 1 or 2 or whatever positionless guard/wing spots. Sure, Galloway is experienced at both slots. and we can move all around. But how did IU do with Galloway at point? Smart and handles himself well. But is he a step slow? Or Gabe Cupps? Yeah. Green freshman really do not have an upper hand against experienced and talented upperclassmen. I have stated that I am most worried about X's position. I think that X is great. If he keeps his head, if he stays healthy, then IU has a great thing going there. Galloway would be pretty good at the 2 or a 3 maybe.6'4" scored 6.6 ppg and didn't attempt enough. He needs to create more and hit from out...get to the line more. Defend like his hair is on fire, again. But if either of those two go down we are in trouble. IU lost TJD, Race, Shifino, Geronimo, and others. And now Newton is undergoing a knee scope. He struggled with a meniscus problem while a senior in high school. Will he be available? I don't want IU to just get by again. IU seems to have reloaded out front. We need experienced guard play...backups. Again. Sure, by the end of the season Cupps and Gunn and Newton and yeah. My problem is trying to realize that the experienced 6th or 7th player isn't happening at IU. Certainly not at the PG. Those players have moved on to the pros or transferred. So go ahead and tell me again the swinging of the wings to the 2 and Galloway to the 1. That's the ticket for not punching into the Sweet Sixteen or competing at the highest level in the B1G. Quote
Gnet550 Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 Not ideal but you can dismiss Leal either…it’s year 3 and he has busted his butt. He might be able to give you serviceable minutes at the 2 as well. I think we’ll be fine. mamasa, realTomCrean, Joe_hoopsier and 3 others 6 Quote

I have nothing against the guy at all but to say a guy is busting his butt, to me, suggests he has been doing more than the average IU player. Has he been getting more time in the gym than others? Has he been getting more shots up than others? I hear the coaches talk about Gabe doing this, MM some too, but have not heard anything about Leal doing anything extra. One of the coaches on HH suggested that XJ, Gallo and Leal could be leaders this year. They went on to give some reasons why each could/should be a leader but when they got to Leal it was basically "he is a senior". I would love to see him find a role and get some regular minutes. Those would likely come as a shooter or potentially as a ball handler here and there. Both of those skills could have been developed more with a lot of gym time doing the extra work. If he keeps his head, Health is a concern but so is your last sentence. He’s had many games where he gets frustrated and either out of control or in foul trouble and needs to be yanked. Having XJ go out at the 10min mark in the first half due to fouls is going to bring some interesting times for us offensively. We’re really thin at guard absent Cupps or Gunn being much better than expected. After the tourney everyone was convinced Woody wanted to get a bunch of perimeter players, spread it out and play uptempo. It certainly didn’t play out that way. Even if Ware is everything he’s projected to be, I’m not sure if he adds more to the team than if we would’ve landed something like to top combo-guard. This is Woody’s team at this point, and I’m curious as to what he has planned. Tom White and Dave from Dayton 2 Quote

As much as possibility as IU struggling, there may just be a sophomore guard that’s ready to take a jump. 2. https://iuhoosiers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-johnson/17637 3. Could probably actually be a solid lineup against bigger terms or slower guards. Quote

I talked to one of the members of the staff at the fantasy golf experience on Friday. He said the culture in terms of work ethic is "much" better this year than last year. Some follow-up questions confirmed that Cupps and Sparks are a major reason for it. Beyond that, it would just be inferences regarding players on the team last year, but I wouldn't say it supports Leal being a gym rat. Stuhoo, thebigweave, 8bucks and 5 others 7 1 Quote

The fact we are going to have to possible rely heavily on an upproven sophmore and a true freshman when there were hundreds of older two guards we could have gotten still baffles me. If we get in an inury situation I dont want to hear woodson talking about how he has to play young guys with no experience that is 100% on him for not bringing in another guard;. AZ Hoosier 1 Quote

It's not as though they didn't try. They did. The players just chose to go elsewhere. It happens. Woodson is obviously not like Crean in that he doesn't fill a scholarship just to fill a scholarship. He knows what he's looking for and couldn't fill the scholarship with that type of player so it'll sit unused. Joe_hoopsier, thebigweave, woodenshoemanHoosierfan and 3 others 6 Quote

Having another body even if they are the same skill level as Gunn would have been very helpful. A guy like Johnson or Trey goes down we are in a world of hurt imo. Quote

Not saying it's impossible, but to infer that we would be an attractive destination to a high-end transfer guard when the role that we needed to fill is; a 15-20 mpg backup to X and Gallo, and that the transfer would have to compete with Gunn, Cupps, and Newton for those minutes is wishful thinking, at best. That's why we didn't have guards knocking down the door to join. BGleas, Crimson and Cream, Tom White and 6 others 9 Quote

Dunno... but back when we were actively working through the transfer portal he was fully expected to play, and that can matter to portal entries considering IU. If (as reported) the latest setback is a meniscus cleanup, he should certainly be back for this season. Napleshoosier, thebigweave, HoosierHoopster and 1 other 4 Quote
