HoosierAloha Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Newkirk made more plays for himself than for others. He had more playing time but he really seemed to have nice spark for us down the stretch (when RoJo was providing very little). I think Newkirk making plays is often forgotten because he was not doing this for others or consistently during the year. Green made some plays for others that no one else did and it will be good if that increases as he gets more time. Agreed, I thought Newkirk played better down the stretch. I think Green has a much higher ceiling and needs more live game action. I can see David getting better entry passes and drop offs for easy buckets, JMo slashing, and our shooters getting better looks with Green. Newkirk seems to be more of a one trick pony and not much of a lead guard that makes others better. 8bucks and ALASKA HOOSIER 2 Quote
goonaha Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Seeing as how neither RoJo nor JBJ got invited to the combine, shouldn't we hear soon about their decision? How much more feedback can they get without attending the combine? Can they do individual workouts with teams up until the May 26th deadline / is that within the rules? ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote

Shooting is always a valuable commodity, regardless of defensive capabilities. As much as I love RoJo, I don't see that type of guarantee being made to him. Quote

No one is going to guarantee Blackmon they will draft him. I will continue to assert that Blackmon wouldn't get drafted if there were 3 rounds. However, if he wants to go play overseas, more power to him. Another year in college will not help him...he is who he is at this point. moyemayhem 1 Quote
Brass Cannon Posted May 2, 2017 Author Posted May 2, 2017 Nobody will guarantee he gets drafted. There are a handful of teams I could imagine would tell him now he would get a training camp contract Quote
goonaha Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 I'd suggest looking at second round picks from the last few drafts before emphatically saying no or that there's a 0% chance. Crazier things have happened than taking a flier on a great college scorer who you expect to shoot 40+% from 3 as a pro. Quote
Chris007 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Mark Cuban says it's better to go undrafted then to get drafted in the 2nd round. Undrafted players can get guaranteed contracts, 2nd round draft picks I guess can't? But I thought Lance Stephenson got one from Larry Bird a few years ago. Maybe it's the choice of the owner-GM. VO5 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 I'm wishing the best for Blackmon and hope he gets paid, whether that is the D-league or overseas. As an NBA player I just can't see it. James is what, 6'4? That would project him as an NBA 1 or small 2 guard. James neither has the vision or quickness to play the 1. This would leave him playing the 2 spot only. He definitely has the shooting ability to play that position, but his real trouble is on D. Can you imagine him trying to guard the best 2s in the league, even the backups for that matter? He gets blown by on a regular basis in college. You can hide certain shooters in the league on D like Channing Frye, but only because he's versatile at 6'8. I can't point to a single 2 guard in the NBA that gets consistent minutes and doesn't play solid D. I just don't see the lateral quickness with James to ever be able to guard effectively. Again, I wish him the best and hope he proves me wrong. I just highly doubt he has any shot. ALASKA HOOSIER and moyemayhem 2 Quote

Newkirk emerged as a play maker but I'm torn as to whether it was a cause, reaction or a little bit of both as it relates to the lack of teamwork on the offensive end. I believe Green should get more time next season, but I'd like to see a healthy split between the two provided CAM does what I believe he will do...get them focused on making plays for others! Capt. Crimson Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Newkirk definitely lost us a couple games this year but in the end he improved and think the problem ran deeper than himself. Interested to see what Miller can do with him. He showed raw flashes of talent throughout the year. With a little discipline in his decision making, think we could get a lot more from him. The way I understand it is that some teams will offer guaranteed contracts to 2nd Rd. draft picks if they wish. Others will draft a player in the 2nd Rd. to be stashed in the D-League and only eligible to that team. If the player does not wish to do this then they can tell the team that they don't want to be drafted by them, which I heard actually happened with Yogi. The reason to decline this option is that if you go undrafted you then have the freedom to choose your spot rather than being at one team's mercy. moyemayhem 1 Quote
