How about the Flutie Effect and the IU higher-ups (McRobbie) not pushing for athletics to be an integral part of the student experience.

"Winning the national championship results in an average 7%-8% increase in applications. In order to achieve the same results by decreasing tuition or increasing financial aid, the Popes found you'd need anywhere from a 2%-24% adjustment."

McRobbie can be pushed out as well for not caring about athletics enough. I know for a fact former president Bobby Fong at Butler was either pushed out or resigned because he wanted to de-emphasize athletics even after Butler's run to the championship games. Needless to say that didn't go well and Fong left to take a job at a small D3 school with no athletics. My point is when your IU, athletics will never be devalued when push comes to shove no matter who the president is as Butler showed us a few years ago. Now how good the teams will be I have no Idea but 0% chance athletics is de-emphasized.

The NIT actually kicks a little money to the road teams and takes a decent chunk of the home team's revenue I think. I read that somewhere.

We were still technically the home team last night though right?

It doesn't make any sense to me. He can't use the "we're an academic school so that's what we're focused on, athletics come second" reason because plenty of fine academic schools also have great athletics. Athletics are the best marketing tool a school has. Duke is a great institution but the average guy walking down the street knows about it because of its basketball program. Without it, they're just another school.

As I said read what I wrote about Butler on the previous page and you will see their is 0% of IU deemphasizing athletics.

Right.  And we're paying the basketball coach over $3 million a year.  So obviously it's not that we don't value athletics.  We do.  We're just not getting a return that matches our investment.

Hate to say it, but definitely agree with Dakich saying Myles Brand had a huge sack.

If Glass had half the Sack Brand did Crean might not have made it to the BTT.

Saying someone has a huge sack is only relevant if what they used it for was a just cause. Otherwise, they're only trying to make a name for themselves. When I heard Bob Knight's comments the other day, about hoping everyone associated with the University who was a party to his dissmissal "was dead", Miles Brand immediately came to mind. Karma was certainly at play there.

There might not be any deemphasizing athletics but we sure aren't getting our money's worth. We pay our coach a top-ten salary and give him the highest recruiting budget in the conference and this is what we get out of it. We spend all this money and we've been the 5th or 6th best program in our own conference. Maybe deemphasizing isn't the right word, but we've been doing something wrong.

Completely agree. I have no way of knowing how good we will be or whether we do things competently. I was just saying there is 0% athletics get de-emphasized or having funding cut as a poster indicated with Butlers situation being an important example of what happens to presidents who become hostile towards athletics (big difference from staying out of it and letting tohers lead which is what McRobbie has done so far).

After taking a 13 hour sabatical, this scenario is what I'm going with:

There were talks with Donovan's representatives and Billy is definitely interested, but not willing to discuss or make a decision until his season is over.  Fred is all about making the home run hire and sending shockwaves across the college basketball landscape, so he plans on doing nothing until OKC is done for the year.  He is allowing Crean to stay on or leave of his own accord - until he gets a decision from Billy or the buyout drops.  It's his gamble, he'll either make an amazing hire or save some cash, appoint one of the assistants as interim coach and spend the entire season searching for a top coach.

Until this happens I'll just be eagerly awaiting April 16th when the Easter Bunny will come to my house.

I thinking/hoping for the same.  I just wish he would go ahead and get rid of CTC. Who cares.  We will do just as good with an interim coach if we have to.

If Crean isn't fired Friday, he's staying. Crean probably already firing up the Jet to go look at a recruit from Oregon.

I get some of those scenarios above, but if he was set on keeping him, why not announce it sooner rather than later? He could go the 2015 route where he says Crean has always been the coach, and we all made a story about nothing, I guess?

The trustees/boosters slowing him down is obviously plausible, but the silence is deafening right now.
