IU Candidate: Billy Donovan (OKC Thunder)

Recommended Posts

With the volume of Billy D. stuff out there, I really hope that it is a sign that there is truly something to follow. Really tired of waiting on IU's true return to blue blood status and a hire like this would really boost IU right back up into contention and back into a spotlight that doesn't focus on the short coming's of an underachieving team! The light of Banner 6 is growing a little brighter with all this talk/rumors IMO and hopes/dreams!

Has a lot more to do with AAU programs in the state than the HS coaches. There was a time when the in-state HS coaches complained about oversigning but those guys never had nearly the weight a lot of people think they do and most are over that whole thing. If they still have issues with Crean it's more about how a player was used in his system, so that should narrow it down considerably.

I've also heard that Crean made some pretty ridiculous requests to schools and coaches.

Can you give an example?

I can! This list is from TheSmokingGun.com, and describes Mariah Carey's backstage demands, but I can certify from non-rumor, potentially vetted, booster connected "inside" sources that I may or may not have, that this is also the list of demands that Tom Crean made when he visited a high school gym:

When we first published Mariah Carey's Tom Crean's tour locker room rider, the singer coach required promoters to stock her his backstage roost with Cristal champagne, which she consumed via "bendy straws." But Carey's Crean's 2010 rider reflects her his growth as an artist recruiter: the bubbly has been replaced with a $200 bottle of cabernet sauvignon and her his dressing room is outfitted with two dozen white roses and vanilla aromatherapy candles.

As for the furniture in her his "living room space," Carey Crean wants "no busy patterns; black, dark grey, cream, dark pink are all fine." It is unclear what kind of negative effect plaid or tartan seating would have on the performance. Carey's Crean's room "should be about 75 degrees," and a "lamp or clip light" should be provided so that "harsh lighting may be turned off" in her his backstage bathroom.

If I'm Donovan, I'm asking Glass to increase the budget I have to hire assistant coaches. I personally think college football is a little more ahead of the curve than college basketball when it comes to assistant coaching, as you see with these stacked assistant coaching staffs at your elite programs. Here is what I would target as my assistants:

1) Fife- Good young coach who could develop under Donovan (if he is hired) and IU boy

2) RESPECTED & GOOD AAU or High School coach in the state of Indiana- Would help in state recruiting and has personal connections with the AAU circuit (Some may not be a fan of this but Harabaugh did this at Michigan, Alford does it at UCLA, and I think it would be a great higher if the coach is both respected and good; can't be just anyone)

3) Former coach and/or IU player who has an NBA background- recruits today love to hear how you will get them to the NBA and who they have coached in the league plus they they be great at developing talent (ex: Randy Wittman / Mike Woodson)

I realize a staff like this would be expensive, especially if a guy like Wittman or Woodson were on the staff, but you have to sell them the idea of teaming up and waking up the sleeping giant that is IU basketball (Find me a better college basketball staff). Sell them on the idea of putting egos aside and take over college basketball and working as a TEAM and all success is attributed to them as a whole. I know this may seem like a pipe dream, but you must dream big to accomplish big.

I have heard first hand that this is true. Word is that HS Coaches in the state feel like they have to "coddle" Crean when he comes to visit/watch players. High maintenance is the other word I have heard used.

I could also envision he could come across as arrogant to many coaches and start telling them how they should be coaching their teams, i.e., play faster and clap more.  And no doubt, he makes overly numerous references to D-Wade.

Feel like it'd be pretty easy to convince a bunch of IU guys to come be assistants for a premier coach like Donovan, without needing to break the bank.

This is the same coach who got an 8 year deal from IU, then went crying to Greenspan that it wasn't enough and demanded two more years be added to it.

The more I find out about Crean, the less I like him, and I have a feeling it will only get worse as time goes on and we hear more.

I've never been a huge fan of him as a person either. He does do a lot of good things but I've heard from people that have been around him that he is a real douchebag.

To being high maintenance...most coaches are. Crean's personality is sure to rub people the wrong way. I've told PM stories about my interaction with the guy and he is strange. None of this really matters...

I guess I didn't really emphasize my point. HS coaches have little to no impact on recruiting at this level.

This is one of the things I've heard he does. He asks the coaches to add sets and try to adjust their style of play to get the players acclimated to his system.

LOL I can totally see him going to a high school game and getting antsy when it's the end of the first quarter and the score is 8-6.

Here's what I want for Donovan's staff:

Whoever the hell he wants to recreate his success at Florida. I could personally care less about a former player or connection to IU. I want the connection from this next staff to OLD IU be..... WINNING.

JUST WIN BABY!

Agreed! The day Billy D becomes IU coach is the same day that I stop worrying about who we are recruiting, who's on our staff, etc. I will have complete faith in him making us elite, in a short amount of time.

Agreed. Was just sharing what I had heard first hand from a coach with a player being recruited by Crean and his conversations with other coaches in the state.
