Has the applicant pool really gotten worse? DDV was at WVU, IU took another P5 school's coach. Archie had a lot of national hype at the time he was hired. The cycle where Woodson was hired seems like the anomaly where we hired a candidate nobody else would've. And people can make their own interpretations as to why before and after Woodson, IU was able to hire coaches that were considered rising stars or already at P5 like DeVries, Crean, Sampson

One of these things is not like the other. Crean rebuilt IU from the ashes of Sampsongate, won B1G titles, took us to multiple SW16’s, gave us Yogi, Cody, Vic, Wat, OG, etc. He wasn’t a great basketball mind but he doesn’t belong in the discontent over the abomination of coaching that was CMW or the failure of CAM

If you guys thought I melted down when the Pacers drafted Chris Duarte, you haven’t seen anything if they trade into the 2nd round for Braden Smith.

I’ll never understand not playing with the Wilson NCAA ball all season. Everyone is so shocked by it every March and the fix for that seems very, very simple.

It also helps that Cig is not a d!ck about it. For all of RMK's ability and coaching chops, he had way more than his share of warts, personality-wise.

IU has lost their minds on exhibition game pricing. For those prices you can go to regular season game(s) at Assembly against as good or even better opponents. Or you could go to a football game. For an exhibition game decent (not amazing) seat… $40 max imo. Cmon IU… price these games lower to get people in the door. Get more fans engaged with IUBB again.

No, IU fans are just so toxic that the toxicity continues to affect the coach after they leave. It also spills over into other programs. Look what IU fan toxicity did to UK last year.

Well I find it pretty hard to believe random posters on a message board are the reason Miller is sub 500 and never finished better than 10th in conference at Rhode Island.

Crean was what we needed at the time. Considering what we've had since, I think we would take anything remotely like that success now. He really had run out of steam recruiting when he was fired. He's a good guy, supports and talks highly of IU, and is good on tv. Would I want him coaching my team now? No. I think he's very knowledgeable but has deficiencies that showed when he was at IU. I've been so apathetic to the basketball program that nothing really gets me down especially with IUFB's rise from the ashes. My hope is we turn the corner as a tournament team and CDD can build something consistent. ETA: or Dusty fails in the NBA and comes back to IU to revive our dead basketball program LOL

I already conceded the fact that you were enamored with Crean…and Woody. Nobody else thinks they are good coaches. But you are welcome to your opinion.

Floundered? He spent 3 years rebuilding a program he inherited with no scholarship players before the portal or otherwise the rebuild would have been accelerated quicker. He won two outright B10 titles and went to 3 S16's in a 6 year stretch, by far the best stretch of Indiana basketball since the early 90's. He missed the tournament (barely) the year after losing two top 5 draft picks and two other 4 year starters while playing a bunch of upperclassmen. He was canned in a year in which he beat two top 5 teams including national champion UNC after losing his best player to an ACL injury while ranked in early January. He never "floundered" at IU once he rebuilt it. Telling a coach B10 championships and second weekend appearances aren't good enough is the reason why IU is where they are today. And we deserve every bit of it.

Yeah, piss poor decision making from the top. High performing coaches are few, but easy to model. IU has almost purposely hired the wrong guy because they didn’t want another Bob Knight, bigger than the program guy.

I could see our staff saying they’d rather spread the money around or don’t believe in cutting a massive check for one guy, but I don’t believe for a second that they couldn’t come up with the money with a few phone calls if they really wanted to.

The Tartan Army was great though and even being outnumbered 70/30 they were loud and fun. We got lucky with a cool night in Miami too with temps around 87 when the game started.

On a podcast Cig hinted we were around 25-27mm. OSU, Oregon and Texas were all allegedly in the 40mm range. I absolutely think we could get outbid and/or decide against giving a freshman x percentage of our total “payroll”.

The rest of the contenders doing everything they can to get bigger and stronger and the Pacers counter by drafting the literally smallest dude at the combine.

Braden Smith sucks man. He flat out sucks. I’m already seeing the TJ McConnell comps. I don’t even like TJ and he’s orders of magnitude better than this dips**t. This franchise drives me insane sometimes.

The key is that Coach Cig doesn’t wastes people’s time. His coaches actually have time to be with their families or attack people on X lol. Whatever assistant leaves they’ll be great replacements lined up.

True! Timing is everything. Thank goodness Indiana University hit the timing exactly right on a multiple generationally great coaches: Bob Knight, the single best tactician and motivator in colege basketball history, Curt Cignetti, the leader of the single most improbable and dominant season in college football history, Doc Counsilman,the greatest coach in college swimming history, and Jerry Yeagley the greatest coach in college soccer history All Hall of Famers - all extraordinary. Kudos to @AH1971 for the reminder that Indiana University and its extraordinary fanbase have the greatest record of timing and coaches of ANY university. Your infectious optimism has reminded all of us that we have so much to be grateful for, and that the current era is a big part of that success!!

Has anyone got the pre-sale tickets yet? The ones I saw on Ticketmaster were $140 to $180. I am not going if that is the price. I could've seen Journey there last week for those prices.

I think we have money but not unlimited money. We have had a number of highly ranked guys on campus that ultimately went somewhere else allegedly somewhat (if not completely) due to the bag. The most recent being the 4 star OL Indiana kid that went to MSU of all places.

You would get this analogy question wrong on the SAT. They were all flawed coaches doomed for failure by those flaws. Some could see it. Others would point to S16s and conf titles as a sign of potential future success. Some still do.

I think so. Normally you'd need more than two years, but the title cemented the whole improbable turnaround story in the CFB history books for the rest of time.

ESPN has Wilkerson in their 2nd round mock draft tonight. They describe 1 of his weaknesses as “having a narrow build.” Uhhh…..you can find stuff to be concerned about but in no universe is that 1 of them.

The only one of those coaches that had anything remotely close to success was Tom Crean. The rest earned every bit of the fanbases ire. Heck a serious program wouldn’t have given most of them the job much less 4 years

I got that impression as well. Both are younger guys and Bryant has a baby. I think the fact that Bryant can spend time with his family plus do what he loves which is head coach the defense is keeping him here. Not to mention they see what happened with Tino. It’s a risk to leave. I’d venture to guess Bryant would be ok if he failed as a hc…he’d likely get a D coordinator position quickly. But how much would he like working with the next guy. He’s been with Cig forever. I think the comfort level he has coupled with his success and his family time may just keep him here a while unless the NFL comes calling for D coordinator. Not convinced Shannahan would be as successful. Cig has a lot to do with the offense coupled with Bostad. I think it’s a collective and they are all pieces of that puzzle for success. While I know Haines has all of his coaches as well, I do believe he is the reason that D is as successful as it is. We continue to be lucky Cig can retain his staff. Have to enjoy the ride while they are all around.

Season three finished #98 in the NET. Season four had top-5 roster money -- he still collapsed early on and missed the tournament again. He was given a chance. He was a terrible coach. Even worse his effort level was very poor. Yea, you are disconnected. Sorry.

Wow. It’s 1 thing to bet on yourself but this is wild if true. Signing a coach to a 1 year guarantee. Yeah, no chance at all the team quits on the guy. This is the same owner that offered Josh Shertz 1/2 of what he makes at SLU to coach Portland.

Shay made her WNBA debut against the Fever here in Indiana for the Mercury last night and hit a 3 late in the game after playing in a blowout in the final two minutes.
