  1. Miller did the right thing recruiting the commits. While Crean recruited them, they committed to IU. While Miller may have to tell a few current scholarship players to take a hike, but his first job was to keep everything together, and he did that. To compare him to Crean is ridiculous. The worst thing he could have done is come in and tell people they weren't good enough (meaning recruits and current players). That would have sent multiple players packing that he really needed to stay if he sent that message. He did the right thing, and there's no debating that! 2. Archie doesn't know what JBJ and TB are going to do. If he didn't try to get all 3 recruits to stay he could've been in a position where he loses OG, James and Tom, and then loses the 3 recruits too. He would be filling the rest of the roster out with table scraps. Sure, he put himself in the oversign position, but he was doing the best he could in a bad situation. It's nothing like what Crean did.

  3. Oversigning because some guys are going to the NBA is one thing, oversigning because you don't want to grant Matt Roth or Colin Hartman a 5th year is another entirely to me. IMO, Crean fostered an atmosphere where guys felt they had to move on or graduate early, or that their spot wasn't safe. I think that's partly why recruiting began to fall off. For instance, I believe that Crean was still the coach that there is no way Hartman is coming back, and I think that's a mistake. Same thing with Roth in 12-13.

  4. Imagine this board if: 1) We still hadn't hired a coach. 2) The OKC and Boston series keep going in the direction they're currently going.

  5. Because there's a difference between putting yourself in a bad situation and having to handle a bad situation someone else put you in? You can try (unsuccessfully I think) to argue that Miller bears some culpability for something that could but isn't guaranteed to happen (this is so silly). But there is a difference between continually constructing your roster in such a way and having to make the best of someone else's roster construction philosophy. Your view is really simplistic and lacks nuance and understanding, either willfully or ignorantly.

  12. In slight defense of Crean (and I don't necessarily like to defend him), the NCAA does coaches no favors with the time element of guys being able to pull out of the draft. It can't be easy trying to sign a class when you don't know who's going and who's staying -- May 24 is awfully late to be trying to determine that. Granted, you should have a decent idea, but you can't always be 100 percent positive. Say, for instance Archie lets Durham and Moore out of their LOIs, figuring Blackman and Bryant will come back. Then, the latter two hire agents and stay in the draft. You've lost two pretty decent recruits. I think guys should be able to get evaluated before deciding to stay or go, but the time frame needs to be revisited -- perhaps tightened up a bit or something.

  13. To me it made it seem like he didn't have a good grip on the roster situation and was just winging it. I didn't like how he would force some players out to make room for new ones. Like this past year Crean was looking like he was recruiting a five man class and now we see that finding room for three is hard enough. I think it weighs on guys and negatively impacts them when they see their coach out recruiting over them, and I think it burned some bridges with high school coaches.

  14. As has been mentioned, I'd put some decent money on Archie knowing more about the situation than any of us combined. Speculating is fun, but it seems irresponsible to be jumping to conclusions (either way) before this shakes out. Archie knows what's going on.

  17. Just looked at today's NBADRAFT.NET update. At 28th OG is barely hanging on to the first round. TB,JBJ and Rojo are not listed in the first or second round. Hopefully they will stay but who knows, they might look at undrafted Troy and Yogi and think "that could be me". FWIW 8 of the projected top 20 picks are from just three schools (Duke, UCLA, UK).....none of which made the FF. Edit: meant to say 8 of the top 20 picks are from 2 schools and Kentucky.

  20. Really, you don't? Crean did it every year (except for the year he should have called a press conference announcing a second rebuild). From what I've heard and read, Miller wanted to do as much as he could for continuity. Obviously, he knew about the oversign situation, and I still think he knows things we don't. What I'm saying is this is his first month on the job. Before we make sweeping comparisons of him and Crean, let's give him a season or two. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

  25. I am going off of memory and what I read at the time, but he took summer classes at IU, but didn't fully qualify to IU's standards. I swear I remember that he met the NCAA standards, but not IU's, (but maybe I'm wrong about that). We were without a doubt oversigned and someone needed to go. it seemed like this was the way "everything worked itself out". If there was any cheating or flunking involved, I did not read about it, but it may not have been public knowledge.

  27. I don't really buy that oversigning is necessary. There's no rule against being under the scholarship limit, and even Crean with his wacky substitutions didn't go 11 or 12 deep; if you are there are other issues than being under the limit. I really don't like the "it works itself out" argument some use; of course it does, there is literally no alternative.

  28. Ron Patterson, Matt Roth, and several others felt forced out. Ron didn't help himself by his actions but if their was a roster spot I'm sure he would have been on the team. Oversigning forces players out and can create a negative environment. Archie is cleaning something up that Crean was known to do every year. There are many successful programs that can manage their roster without oversigning. I hope this is something Archie is able to do it.

  31. I understand oversigning players but I don't like it. I also think there are advantages to not oversigning. Like mentioned above, you're not sending a message that you need to be gone after 4 years. If there is a scholarship available then reward a walkon. We lacked senior leaders for most of Crean's tenure due to NBA departures, transfers, or not having a scholly available. Fourth and fifth year seniors can provide valuable leadership that a new frosh can't. We might be losing only one scholarship player to the NBA yet Crean was still recruiting '17. Who would have gone? Hartman seemed to be one of them (fifth year senior leadership). Have a solid 8-9 man rotation with players 10-12 willing to either work and wait their time or just bust their butt preparing the rotation players. Bag a scholly for a grad transfer or a high level spring commit. We need roster balance and upperclassmen to provide real leadership.

  32. Crean did say in a press conference Hartman could come back if he wanted to. Roth got a raw deal in his situation ( yes I know he got a grad degree) but still he should of been able to play his last year Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

  33. I hope we do over sign a little. Not to Crean's magnatude but I would like to see some of our 4 or 5 star kids make it to the NBA by year 2 or 3. This isn't Dayton and it's not Kentucky one and done. I just want consistent talent which will require an over sign here and there. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BtownBanners mobile app

  35. That is true, but if we had a scholarship available, do you think he would have "fully qualified?" I personally think it would have been a non-issue. My whole thing with Crean was his whole approach to recruiting. He would offer 15 kids for 2 scholarships. He didn't seem to recruit based on need, and didn't seem to have any real plan. Every year he over recruited because it seemed he couldn't stand the thought of a single scholarship going unclaimed. It was almost like an addiction.

  36. He plagiarized a paper and got a zero, which brought his grade down to a C-. He then claimed IU saw this as a solution to the oversign situation and jumped on it. Maybe if he'd tried a little harder in high school it wouldn't have come down to that.

  37. My problem was with Crean doing it year after year. Archie has only been on the job for a month (side note, it feels like he's been here much longer than that). If Archie does it every year like Crean did then I'll have a problem with it. I just need more evidence at this point.

  38. I could definitely see this happening. Bryant stood up for Crean more than anyone else. "He's my guy." Obviously that iconic picture after the loss to UNC last year. So maybe Crean's firing hit him more than others. He also came in with a pedigree and expectations that he would not be here long. He was almost gone last year, and this year was supposed to be his victory tour before getting the big contract to play professionally. Instead the team sucked, his unheralded classmate OG stole all the draft thunder (with somewhat pedestrian numbers), the fanbase turned on Thomas the way we're prone to do, and the season was flat awful. It makes sense that Thomas wants to leave. Next year, without him, is going to be rough. DD is a very talented player, but he's on borrowed time each game until he's in foul trouble. Clifton isn't ready (IMO), and doesn't want to be in the paint anyway. So it's going to be putting Juwan and Collin on the opposing team's big, and likely some brand of small ball on offense. Not the end of the world, but we are going to have a lot of points to make up, especially if JBJ goes too.

I agree to an extent, but right now he really doesnt have much of a choice. Their second best scorer should probably be Vic and hes playing like garbage and no one else is really capable of scoring in bunches to keep them in games.

My bad. Garbage is too strong of a word. I got carried away. I should reserve that word for a player who doesn't care. He does care. He just doesn't seem to know any better. So there's a better word than garbage. When I think of it, maybe I'll post it.
