I beg to differ. There's going to be a lot more meaningful games during the regular season with so much more on the line now.

If any of y'all ever experienced FCS at a personal level, you completely understand what I'm saying here.

I don't want to watch an actual title contender worsen their chance because they are playing an extra game or 2 against a non contender and injuries happen with more games. And with the current landscape of the sport you are not able to build the depth of the 2010's great teams.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. There will be more meaningful games for teams in that 15-30 or so range looking to get into the bottom of the playoff. But look at the teams that would have made the second half of the playoff last year. Is getting them into the playoff really worth fewer meaningful games between the top schools? Saturday’s game between IU and OSU, for example, is meaningless in a 24 team format. A 12 team format strikes a good balance between opportunity and exclusivity. 24 teams is just too many.

It’ll be 21-22 P4 teams, ND, and 1-2 G6 teams per year.
So nearly a third of P4 teams will make it every year. Shame.

Do we rest our starters vs Purdue with a playoff home game already locked up?

I agree. The FCS system avoids this.

Even the top half are fighting for a 1st round bye and top seed. It's no different then what happens in other sports.

This weekend's game is so far from meaningless. The B1G Championship still up for grabs and so many more conference games to follow. We've only played 3 conference games so far. Nothing is given and so much can happen during a season.

Not sure how our guy here compiles his data but I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that not a single IUFB fan in the entire universe has thought about firing the Coach.

Well, says right at the bottom how he compiles the data, and yes, I can see irrational comments like that being made in game threads. Game threads are full of stupid reactions.

You got me there. I didn't take into account of a league the operates without the traditional knockout tournament. Those leagues count ties too! ;-)

Well, to further the analogy, CFB used to have ties and no tournament. Nobody died. It was fine. It was the best regular season in sports.

Now it’s just another prelude to a bloated tourney.

I can see that. I would just toss out that most of us would agree that the dudes whose rankings actually count, frankly suck at it. There is so much SEC bias at the top of the rankings. Those idiots all just jerk each other off and rank each other by continuously ranking SEC teams higher than they should. I would argue 12 allows teams that aren't getting ranked high enough the opporunity to win it all.

This is all coming from an IU fan, who thinks them not being ranked higher to start was wrong, and now they have fallen over and over again. Meanwhile Miami and ND continue to go up the rankings for no other reason than they are Miami and ND. That this weekend is absolutely an elimination weekend for IU, but definitely not OSU, bothers me and makes the 4 team playoff very flawed.

Tourneys don’t always crown the best team either. They wild-card Giants beat the undefeated Pats in the SB.  The poll system probably got it right more often than a tournament does.

I get the sense that people want college football to be like every other sport where the regy season is just a prelude to a bloated tourney. Good news—you’re going to get it.

FWIW, Saturdays game doesn’t matter to either IU or OSU because the loser is still getting in the tournament. It’ll be a big game. But it’ll be nothing like big games in the past that actually carried championship implications. At least this game will carry B1G championship implications…which won’t even be a thing in a couple years.

17.4% of the field will be qualifying for the privilege of hoisting the CFP trophy. That is the lowest percentage of the field to qualify for a tournament in ALL of sports, including the FIFA World Cup.

100% of the field can qualify for the field at the beginning of the season. Win games.

Yeah man, I'm well aware of this. I don't know the validity of this x post but this dude did some legwork regarding G6/G5 schools that would qualify from 2014-2025. 2020 had the most qualifiers with 5 but every year except 2014 has at least 2 or more to qualify. 2020 was obviously a very unique year. (Sidenote: CTA's IUFB would have qualified and Btown would have hosted a home game against NC State.) While I'd prefer to have AQs for all FBS conferences I think the first step of expanded to 24 teams is a very big step. Hopefully, the demand or support gets rolling for the FCS system once the fans start to experience this playoff.

17% of the field to qualify for a tourney is so far from bloated, unless you and I don't agree on the word bloated of course.

It matters to me. But to each his own.

I think it’s fair to say it’s bloated.  Realistically even with the new parity in football.  Less than half the field is gonna have a chance to actually win. And yes I think it’s fair to call the basketball tourney bloated as well.

Is every tournament in all sport bloated? I ask because 17% is the lowest percentage to qualify for a tournament in ALL of sport.

In pro sports the talent and coaching is more leveled.  I would say most years you could squint real hard and see half if not more of football teams winning.  Basketball it’s probably 5 or 6 teams each year which is what 20 percent of the league.

Did you watch Iowa last year? They proved time and time again they could not beat actual good team. EVERY time. And now you want to give them another chance to lose to a title contender? The only question in a potential Iowa-ND outcome last year is, who gets injured on ND

This is my issue.  They had four cracks at ranked teams and couldn't win one.  Do we need them in the playoff for the national title?

Iowa still got to play Vandy in good bowl game that got 5.7 million viewers.
