Class of '66 Old Fart Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 Last night was the Hoosier Reunion All-Star Classic at Knightstown. Romeo was there but did not play but Doyel of the Indy Star had a conversation with him. Also in the article are some comments on Robert Phinisee who did participate. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2018/06/01/doyel-romeo-and-phinisee-hoosiers-gym-whats-up-dean-tate/664371002/ HoosierSadaseci, HoosierHoops1, hoosierfan6157 and 1 other 3 1 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 Interesting tidbit on Sean East, Romeo's teammate at New Albany and a player who had a pretty darn good senior season in his own right. Also a young man who some time back was mentioned/rumored/discussed/thrown out as a possible walk-on for IU. From Greg Mengelt of the News & Tribune - Last I talked with him a couple weeks ago, it appeared he was leaning JUCO or prep school because of the lack of offers. One never knows. He could still end up at IU at a future date. Whoozhers 1 Quote

Class of '66 Old Fart Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 The Anderson Herald-Bulletin: NEW ALBANY — Wednesday night’s Indiana All-Star event featuring the Seniors versus the Juniors had been billed as one final chance for New Albany’s Mr. Basketball, Romeo Langford, to play before his hometown fans. New Albany head coach Jim Shannon, also the coach of the Senior All-Stars, said Tuesday it would be bittersweet. He said there would be a lot of New Albany fans, himself included, who might tear up a little bit at the nostalgia of the event. But Shannon said Langford wouldn’t be among them. He said his senior star was ready to show people what he could do. He did that against the Juniors on Wednesday when Langford had a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Senior All-Stars to a come-from-behind 111-101 victory before an estimated crowd of 2,000 at New Albany High School. Langford was 7-of-16 from the field, 1-of-5 from 3-point range and made 11-of-12 free throws. Of his 11 rebounds, 10 were on the offensive end. “It was great to play here one more time in the Doghouse,’’ Langford said. The 6-foot-5 Indiana-bound shooting guard received loud ovations before the game and also when he came out for good with 1:29 to play. At that point, the New Albany faithful saluted him with a standing ovation. In the first game of the evening, the Senior Girls All-Stars defeated the Juniors 75-68. Miss Basketball Amy Dilk of Carmel was the lone player in double figures for the Seniors with 16 points. She also had five assists. Jorie Allen from Bedford North Lawrence led the Juniors with 16 points while Fort Wayne Concordia’s Carissa Garcia added 12. In the boys game, the first half belonged to the Juniors. The Juniors led 56-49 at the break after leading by as many as 11. In the second half, the Seniors turned up the defense, and that proved to be the difference. “We just didn’t play defense like we knew we could (in the first half),’’ Langford said. “Coach Shannon talked about our energy at halftime, and then we came together as a team. He knew we weren’t playing defense like we know we can, and that’s what got us going.’’ The Seniors used an 18-1 run early in the second half to gain control. A follow shot by Damezi Anderson was the final bucket of the run that put the Seniors up 72-64 with 14:20 to play. Anderson, who will join Langford and point guard Rob Phinisee at Indiana in the fall, scored 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He also had six rebounds — five on the defensive end. The soon-to-be Indiana trio combined for 53 of the Seniors’ 111 points. Phinisee and Aaron Henry, who will attend Michigan State, were the co-leaders in assists with five each. The game was the final tuneup before the Seniors take on Kentucky in the annual rivalry. The teams will meet Friday in Louisville and Saturday in Indianapolis. Shannon thought Wednesday night’s game was a really good test against a hungry junior squad that was missing two of its stars in Center Grove’s Trayce Jackson-Davis and Fort Wayne North’s Keion Brooks Jr. “I thought that was a really good test because the juniors are really talented, and they’re missing a couple of really good players,’’ Shannon said. “It’s no telling how good those juniors are when they have their full team together.’’ Shannon said it’s always a little tougher to get the Seniors ready for the Juniors. “It’s just the nature of the beast, so to speak, because they’re the younger team trying to come out and punch the Indiana All-Stars,’’ Shannon said. “And they want people to notice them because they want to be on that team next year, too. So I think the Juniors are more loose, more relaxed because for them it’s like ‘Hey, what have we got to lose?’ “So maybe our guys were a little tense in the first half, but I really thought we opened things up and played well in the second half.’’ Cathedral’s Armaan Franklin led the Juniors with 20 points, big 6-7 Ben Davis inside player Dawand Jones had 19 points and Valparaiso’s Brandon Newman had 18 points. Popular Post Stromboli Posted June 7, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 7, 2018 The 3 Indiana recruits were the highest performers for the seniors. And with them going 3-14 from 3pt, they'll fit right in... Hunter, the Purdue commit, played fine. Interesting that Coach Shannon has to play guys like Rob over Sean East, probably not a great position to be in. Probably the best interviews after the game came from Damezi. He has no problem sounding enthusiastic for the team, and maybe giving the reporters the soundbite they're looking for. He built up his teammates. Some interesting tidbits: he's going to be #23, and will be roommates with Jerome Hunter. Apparently they became friends when Jerome's Pickerington North team came in for the Forum Tipoff Classic, and they've been texting ever since. Romeo, for his part, seemed a little bit over it. He's always been soft spoken, but this bordered on being curt and disinterested. He did say he was excited to start the next phase, move to Bloomington next week. Good Lord, I wish I was moving to Bloomington for school next week. Anyway, happy to see our guys show out. I hope Rob finds his 3pt shot this weekend. And major congrats to Archie and the staff for making Indiana an attractive destination for these guys. It's been a blast following recruiting for this past year.
