UM Graduate Transfer Max Bielfeldt To IU

Recommended Posts

it doesn't really matter. He's by all accounts a great kid on and off the court that could provide some sorely lacking leadership. He won't be a stud by any means, but he would provide some depth in the post. Scholly is a moot point as well (which I know you didn't talk about in your post, but felt it was important to add). I dont know why anyone would have a problem with this

It doesn't really matter???

Mike White.  Bawa Muniru.  Tijan Jobe.  Ben Allen.   Bobby Capobianco.   Jessean Gray-Ashley.   Guy-Marc Michele.  Peter Jurkin.   Hanner Parea.

They were all big men who were "difference makers" to crimson-goggled IU fans who believe any kid who says yes is a difference maker.    All either very over-rated or poor fits for whatever system or coach existed at the time.   You can go find a psychology major who's a great kid on and off the court.  Doesn't mean he's a good fit for the basketball team or can help them win.

I don't recall anyone saying they had a problem with it.  I just don't see anything to get excited about.  A warm body with some size.  Ya hoo.   "Depth in the post" is something we just lost.  Doesn't mean the first kid who says yes automatically provides what Indiana needs.   I've got no idea what our options are apart from him, but if I've learned one thing from Tom Crean, it's "recruiting" is a lot more than getting 13 kids to say yes so your roster is filled every season, and he's had as many or more misses than he's had hits.   So, I question almost every kid who comes in here if he's got mediocre numbers or is an unknown.   Especially when it comes to big men.

You act like Crean found this kid at a local YMCA pickup game. He's a proven player in OUR conference! He's not a superstar by any means but he can play at this level and he's proven it. Those guy you mentioned never proved they were B10 level guys. I was looking at his stats from last year. He had 9-5 against Wis, 12-7 at Ill, and 7-9 at MSU. Plus he's a high character guy, and that can make a big difference on an immature team like ours. Any team in the B10 would love to have a guy like this. I mean we're not asking him to be a star and play 35 mins. I don't see any negatives with bringing this guy aboard.

Good post, this team is in need of a leader both on and off the court, and Bielfedt might be that guy. He has the intangibles that some of our current players are in need of developing. Obviously a team first type of player which are hard to come by at times.

And you guys act like there's no history and that a team's system is irrelevant    Numbers don't just automatically translate because he played in the same conference.   What he did in Michigan's system doesn't matter....that's all I'm saying.   No big man in Crean's history here has done well if he hasn't been able to run the floor exceptionally well.  That's not Bielfeldt's game.  Maybe he'll be great at Indiana.   I hope so.   But let's look at another Big Ten player to use an example of "system matters."   Evan Turner, Big Ten player of the year.   Scores 17 points a game in Philadelphia.   Looks like an all star.   Comes to the Pacers....shoots a low percentage, defense suffers, shooting % drops, productivity plummets, etc.   Goes to the Celtics, and numbers climb again.  Percentages go up.  Stats improve across the board.

I don't necessarily see any negatives, but what I DO see is a coach who has to start bringing in kids who fit.   I love how I gave several examples of kids who didn't, and they're just brushed aside with the assumption that Bielfeldt isn't those kids.   Maybe he is and maybe he isn't.  It depends a lot more on how he's used than what ability he has; and a kid has to have the right circumstances to succeed.  He doesn't just have to show up somewhere.  You know...at some point, the blind loyalists will be right and a kid WILL be very good; but I think it's funny that I see comments like this one from above :  Max is not any of those kids.  Please quit stereotyping him into a group you created to disparage him.  And why use that group to bash Crean's recruiting when a couple of them are Sampson players?

Really?  I disparaged him?  When?  Where?   So 7 of 9 examples isn't enough to put a little doubt in Crean's ability to get the right kids?   Especially when there are a few guards, too?   In big men alone, we're talking about one for every season he's been here, and you ask me why I use that group to question Crean?   Not that you're willing to ignore history or anything, right?  7 players in 7 years....and it's meaningless.  Nothing to see here and no evidence on which to stereotype.   IU fans didn't make cases for ALL of those players being difference makers.  There's no relevant history here!

System matters.   A lot.   All I'm saying.   Again, no big man in Crean's history here has done well if he hasn't been able to run the floor.  That's not Bielfeldt's game.  So what makes him different other than an intangible of "high character?"   (People talked a lot about Davis' character, too...for what it's worth)

I'm not saying there are negatives....but I'm not putting much faith in Tom Crean brining in that perfect missing piece, either.   A kid says yes, and I can find thousands of Indiana fans just like you who are more than willing to put a cape on him and tell me he's going to be great.   The examples I gave above all could be used....but since they seem to be irrelevant, I'll leave it at that.   I hope he's great.

The discussion in this thread is exactly the same as the discussion when we signed NZ last year.  You never know what the ultimate impact is and I think most of us agree that we wish we were bringing in another 6'11" player who could potentially start.  But given the time of year that just isn't happening.  The fact is we just lost 2 of our big men I think this is a great way to replace them.

Put a cape on him and tell you he's going to be great? Who said that? We're talking about a guy who would play 10-15 mins a game at the most. Backing up Bryant and probably Holt. You act like everyone is saying he's the next Cody Zeller! Even if he doesn't contribute at all who cares! He's only filling a spot for 1 year and DD and HMP aren't coming back. I'd rather roll the dice with this kid than an April or Priller.

It would be hard for a kid to come in from Michigan and be a team leader.  But, in the absence of a leader, he could emerge.  If nothing else, he could be a good teacher for Bryant and the other front court players in conference play.  Working hard and being experienced will hopefully make him a leader by the time the season starts, but it will take time

If this kid is a 6pts. / 7reb. player in 15 min. bring him on now.

Also, a couple of hard (not flagrant) fouls and the VanVleet's of the world will think twice about driving it in.  We don't need the Perea school of defense here.

We have a lot of finesse on this team.  We need to sprinkle must muscle in there as well.
