I don’t think he starts anywhere meaningful next year.  So if the plan is to hand the keys over to him after Hoover then I bet he stays.

Would Cig really guarantee that though?  He likely would not. I watched an interview not long ago with Shanahan. He said it’s been a long time since they’ve had a qb that started more than 1 year. Idk if that means they started transfers or seniors…it just stuck out to me that he said that thinking about Alberto.

I don’t think he guarantees anything, but certainly can lay out the plan.  You do this, you do that, and you’ll get there type of thing.  Good to know they prefer senior level starters - would set alberto’s expectations.

Not sure if he slipped up or what exactly but Wiltfong said Alberto Mendoza would be in the portal. Said this on a Rivals pod he does. Don't shoot the messenger.

It sounded like a prediction, not a statement based on knowledge.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I had a quick conversation with someone at the Peach Bowl related to them. Was pretty random. I made some comment like “looking forward to seeing Alberto start someday,” and their response was kind of awkward.  I wouldn’t read much into it, but it did make me think he wasn’t interested in waiting around another year. Hopefully I’m wrong about that.

Nothing to say he couldn’t come back if he did leave.  “Go to ball state and start for a year and we will see if things work out”

The entire Mendoza family knows exactly how this whole thing works. They know nothing is ever handed to them. It's been said time and time again, that Coach Cignetti want production OVER potential. In my heart of hearts, I would love for Alberto to be the new face of IU football, but something tells me, it won't be this year. jmo

I can totally see him wanting to come back IF he decides to transfer.

Just a quick reminder.

Jan. 11, was an NCAA designated Quiet Period meaning in-person contact could only be made on campus.

Jan. 12-14, is an NCAA Dead Period meaning any and all in-person contact is verboten including UV's and OV's

Jan. 15-31, no holds barred.

Feb 1, is a Quiet Period.

Feb. 2 - Mar. 1, is a Dead Period.

Alberto isn’t his brother. He’s several inches shorter and doesn’t have the arm. Maybe he can be a successful college quarterback, but the position is far too important to risk going into the year with an unknown guy, particularly in the portal when you can go out and get a guy with nearly 10k career yards at the Big 12 level.

Seems pretty clear the staff wants to add another running back. Beebe, Richard, Martin, Cuono already on the roster so seems like someone would be leaving.

It's standard to have 5 scholarship backs at this level. It's a position that gets beat up regularly...See Beebe
