SEC shills, Purdue fans, and other jealous traditionalists who thought he would move on soon will be going through some things now...and I'm here for all of it.

One difference between Allen and Franklin is that Allen’s parting deal was a one time payout that did not include a “claw back” if he gets another job.

Franklin is being paid over time and PSU owes him 49m less what he makes at another school. If Franklin signs a 5 year 25m deal, as an example, PSU will be off the hook for 25 million.  Would be kind of funny if Franklin took 100k a year just to F with PSU.

That's all irrelevant. My point is simply that the "buyout" has been used historically to lessen the chance that a coach leaves before the contract ends, and to mitigate the financial impact in the case that the coach does, in fact, leave early. And my point extents to say that if a school is willing to pay $49M (give or take, allowing for any clawback or offsets), it is effectively not a deterrent, and the buyout amount is, therefore, pretty much irrelevant to the big picture.

Allen's buyout (and the vast majority of coach contract buyouts) are structured as Franklin's was, but with any termination, the particulars are negotiable, and that was what happened with Allen.

Uh-oh. We'd better think twice about this.

Finebaum is not on board!

If Finebaum is pooh-pooh-ing it, but must be a good and sound move. He's an idiot, and needs to retire.

Is the buyout even a thing any more? I mean, Penn State paid Franklin $49M to go away. That is insane. Almost as insane as paying Tom Allen $15M+ to go away. I'm honestly not sure any number really matters any more.

That $15M was a great investment.

I still can't get over the 'fairytale' aspect of IU football! And Indiana doing the right thing to extend Cig and seemingly doing everything right in regard to the program is still so mind blowing!! I think the buyout should be more. Man this is unreal...

I’ve been so busy lately but have been watching our Hoosiers each weekend. I’m so happy for Hoosier Nation, Curt was a home run hire since the news leaked he was getting hired. This is 100% worth the investment.

Finebaum's opinion might carry some weight if we were in the SEC...but we're not. SEC schools throw bags at coaches, throw more bags at them if they win a lot, then discard them when the wins stop coming. That's not happening here. Before the season began, one of the concerns we heard was "what if he doesn't get Indiana back to the CFP?" Well, then we give him what he needs to load up and try again next year. We're not recycling our coach if he only goes 8-4 because again, this isn't the SEC.

Yeah, but what does Dakich think about this?

LMAO

I would still love to understand why Dakich is a scapegoat with IU fans.  He was around for 17 years and knows.  He loves Cignetti and completely supportive of IU and of Cignetti.   His delivery isn't for some, but anyone is welcome to let me know when he's been flat wrong or lied about anything relative to IU athletics.   No, he isn't bitter he didn't get the basketball job.  No, he and Bob Knight were never close and Knight was not exactly loyal to him.

I would really love to understand why he became a villain.

This contract was a no brainer.  Good for all involved.

He's not a scapegoat. He's a punchline, because he's made himself a laughing stock with his tired shtick, lol. I don't think he's a villain. He's not that consequential. I think he's just a rage baiting hack and find that worthy of derision. Just one guy's opinion.

Agree, this contract was a no brainer and good for everybody. Future is bright for IUFB.

Well said, on all points.
