How do you figure?

I’m just guessing online, but we didn’t hire anyone for a long time, and then Murphy is a no and another Texas Tech assistant leaves and 24 hours later we get Johnson. Maybe Johnson was in the works for weeks! But maybe once IU found out Murphy and Achoki were a no they moved to the next option.

Seems unlikely Texas Tech would lose its top two recruiters in one offseason. Again I’m just guessing online.

Johnson was the Operations Director and coached U17 for Team Takeover in the EYBL before he went the college route. That is a very insular program. Those guys are super familial and crazy proud of it.
Nyk Lewis is a Team Takeover kid. Just sayin’…..

I don't recall seeing Kenny Johnson's name even whispered as a possible staff addition until Osterman's tweet.  DDV is handling his staff hires as close to his vest as Dolson did the coaching search.  And given our university's reputation for not getting our fingers dirty I have to believe that everybody involved in this hire have satisfied themselves that Kenny is a good hire and he's been completely vetted.

Assistants for the most part are given out marching orders from the head coach.  He does something dirty it came from the head coach.

And/or coaches hire assistants specifically because they know how they operate and who they are connected to…for better and worse.

This is from Raby's story on Johnson and this just blows my mind.

Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in cell, molecular biology and genetics in 1999 from Maryland, where he was a Benjamin Banneker Scholarship recipient. He worked as a protein chemist and molecular biologist at Human Genome Sciences in Rockville, Md., after graduation.

I remember this from his first IUBB go-around.

I think it's partly the visual; he looks like a big 'ol beer guzzling slick salesman type, but to be good at what he does a guy has to be really really smart, and he clearly is.

Welcome aboard (back aboard) Mr. Kenny Johnson. He helps in the recruiting department and was considered a top assistant at one point. If he can get us in with really good talent then let’s go! Might not be a hot name but it makes sense. Help get recruits to Coach and let it role from there.

Go Hoosiers!
