BA47591 Posted April 6, 2025 Posted April 6, 2025 I couldn't be happier for Coach Sampson. An incredible redemption story in the makings. I said it all year, whomever the coach for us may be. Give me a Houston identity we'll be good. Hoosier987 and soindianahoosierfan 2 Quote

HoosierFan1994 Posted April 6, 2025 Posted April 6, 2025 Days like this are why this sport is awesome. Probably the second worst choke job I've seen in the NCAA tournament. The all-time one was Northern Iowa-Texas A&M. Scheyer is much more likeable than Coach K, but he's not all that like the media makes him out to be. He's been able to use the Duke brand to get Elite recruits. Blew it last year against an 11 seed in the Elite 8 and again this year against a Houston team that has nowhere near the talent Duke has. You are spot on..all I heard in 2022 was how Hubert replaced a legend. Look how that's going for them. Same with Scheyer this week. He is able to get all the talent he wants. Ex: next year Boozer twins. He's won nothing. His first year they get spanked in the 2nd round by a Tennessee team that had nowhere near the talent they did. Last year blew it to an 11 seed in the Elite 8. Tonight blows a 14 point lead against Houston. He was a great player and seems like a great guy. I just think he's another golden boy the CBB media puts on a pedestal. I remember how surprised I was that he was going to replace Coach K. DePaul had just turned him down. skhoosier2 1 Quote

skhoosier2 Posted April 6, 2025 Posted April 6, 2025 Sampson with the masterful coaching job down the stretch. Duke had Houston on the ropes and just kept letting them hang around. For most of the game, Duke’s talent was too much for Houston to handle. Epic meltdown and great win for Houston. Should be a great game Monday night. Hoosier987 1 Quote

Many are hung up on what Sampson did to IU, but for me, it was the IU pres/admin extreme overkill, following the self-reporting to the self-imposed insane sanctions that deconstructed the program into the dirt, over phone call violations. Sampson then did his time on show cause, came back and has built UH into one of the best bball programs. UH and IU of course run their programs and oversight differently, but there’s no aura of cheating or bad stuff around the UH program and the players love Sampson— and end if the day for me, he’s at least in the conversation for best current college bball coach, the strategy and the buy just a blast to watch. And my middle kid is a senior at UH…. Him getting to experience what I did in 87 would be kinda cool…. soindianahoosierfan and RoadRage 2 Quote

I met him when he was here and immediately liked him. Had a chance to talk to him multiple times. He's a better coach now than he was then. His time under Scott Skikes was huge. He's better now in specific situations, creating mismatches to exploit. His teams have always been tough though. If they win it all I won't be surprised if he retires. He has some medical issues you mightve picked up on. soindianahoosierfan, HoosierHoopster and go iu bb 3 Quote

Unfortunate it didn’t work out here…but I think he learned a lot. He’s a really good guy.
