Napleshoosier Posted March 29, 2025 Posted March 29, 2025 I’m optimistic! Sounds like we are getting back to IU style basketball that we haven’t seen for quite sometime. Time to get behind our coach! Go Hoosiers! Dave from Dayton, hoosierfan6157, FWHoosier84 and 3 others 6 Quote
Brass Cannon Posted March 29, 2025 Posted March 29, 2025 I’m confident he will be at worst our second best coach since Knight was fired. And considering he is behind the guy who has almost won a NC a couple times that’s pretty high praise. And really just a testament to the terrible hires we have made. Davis and Woodson were both just absolutely terrible hires Crean and Archie were once that if you squinted real hard you might be able to say “maybe” Sampson and DeVries had actually done the kind of job we needed. .333 percent for serious hires. Something that should always be 1.0000 Dave from Dayton and go iu bb 2 Quote
Shoes_N_Shorts Posted March 29, 2025 Posted March 29, 2025 I really wanted McCollum, and initially was not too enthused about the hire. Hopefully he wins enough, and his style is suited to creating the home court advantage at Assembly Hall that we are all used to. I do think that Tucker is an almost perfect mentor to teach Sisley how to be a high impact stretch/shooting forward. Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted March 29, 2025 Posted March 29, 2025 To think we had Sampson 20 years ago. One of the best coaches to ever do it. That can recruit star guys and get them to buy into team concepts. Then smeared him and sent him packing. Tough. Let’s hope DeVries can get this thing rolling. Fanbase really on the breaking point. Maybe more than I can ever remember. Although the younger fans are taking over and the Bob Knight days will fade into lore and memories. Our inability to reclaim success as a “Blue Blood” program is staggering. BUT the resources have only been “Blue Blood” for the past 2-3 years. We liked the title but never actually supported our coaches the way they need supported to win. That goes for Sampson and Crean as well. JF87 Posted March 29, 2025 Posted March 29, 2025 I was hoping for Stevens or Dusty May. I'm optimistic about DeVries. He is a huge improvement over Woodson. I think DeVries is a culture builder which IU desperately needs. Unfortunately, there's always going to be a part of me upset that IU didn't cut Woodson loose last year and hire Dusty when the window was open. skhoosier2 1 Quote

College basketball lifer who is a normal guy by all accounts. Track record of success. Wants to be here. With Izzo likely retiring soon, Big10 is going to be dominated by IU/Devries, Michigan/May and Purdue/Painter. McCullom/Iowa will still be Iowa. The rest will be the rest. Agree. Had we had a discussion 2 months ago and I'd told you we would be hiring a midwestern guy who comes from a middle class athletic family, played basketball at the D2 level and was a team captain, focuses on defense and efficiency, has won everywhere he's been and has experience turning teams around, and whose brother is a former walk on defensive tackle who still leads the University of Iowa in tackles for loss.....and followed that up by saying we're going to support him with as many resources as he needs......what else does anybody need? I don't care if we win the press conference and I'm thrilled the trash has been taken out. Handing out money can't be what IU basketball's about. JF87, Jeff Flabjohns and Napleshoosier 3 Quote

Indiana is fundamental hard nosed basketball and I think Devries will bring that back. Napleshoosier and skhoosier2 2 Quote

All great but handing out money is what all the best programs do and have done for 50 years. Just got to have a coach that can pick the right kids and all strive for a common goal. lillurk and Napleshoosier 2 Quote

Every single one of the losers and quitters who just left were at IU solely for the money. You saw what that "bought." Money cannot be the only reason or we might as well hire a 7 year old girl to coach the team. Ryno6284, GloryDays, Napleshoosier and 1 other 4 Quote

HoosierTrav Posted March 30, 2025 Posted March 30, 2025 Completely apathetic. Not sold that he’s going to be able to out recruit and out coach the rest of the coaches in the B1G. How good is he without his all conference caliber son? Can he get this thing going quickly? Can he get it going at all? Indiana has proven itself as a very difficult place to win and it chews guys up and spits them out. Scotty R 1 Quote

Understand how it’s hard to get excited about a roster of 2 right now. We should have much more to analyze / potentially get excited about by the end of April. Maybe next week we get something. I think there’s a lot to like about DeVries profile. We’re gonna have to wait for him to show the fan base though. Thank goodness Cig and IUFB in the fall will help pass the time until we can see what we’re working with. Sounds like an overseas trip could be in the works too, so maybe we get a preview over the summer. TadQueasy and go iu bb 2 Quote

But lets give him a chance. He won a lot of games at Drake before his son was in college. So I dont really think that is a fair question at the moment. cybergates and AZ Hoosier 2 Quote
8bucks Posted March 30, 2025 Posted March 30, 2025 I found ways to be optimistic with all the prior hires since RMK left. With DD I find myself cautiously cautious. I did like how several WVU podcasts spoke extremely highly of him. Same with McDermott. Quote

It's not at all this face value simple. I detailed it a month ago and we have hired the wrong guy - most times on purpose - time and again, and this is the first true unobstructed hire since 1971. Mike Davis just finished a 1-31 season. A horrible coach. Crean recruited with a shotgun and wore everybody around him out. Sampson set IU back a decade. Archie was terrible at Rhode Island. Mike Woodson was arrogant, entitled, and lazy. Had no experience or interest in coaching college basketball. There is a "why" to your last statement; and it's valid. skhoosier2, HinnyHoosier, go iu bb and 5 others 6 2 Quote
bigrod Posted March 30, 2025 Posted March 30, 2025 Personally, I am more optimistic for the future of IU basketball, even with virtually no team, than I was after last off-season with Woody's cooking. Don’t know how his early recruiting/ portaling is going to go, or the first season, but I am fairly comfortable his team building and coaching will win people over as we move forward hoosierfan6157 1 Quote
