Did I see a post here that the salary pool for the coaching staff was only $1M? Seems low for a full staff where the HC is making $5M... hopefully CDV can get that bumped up for some quality guys...

I added up the salaries I saw for the assistant coaches under Woodson to get that number.

Hunter: $432k

Rosemond: $410k

Walsh: $225k

Those add up to less than $1.1M. I think they also get retention bonuses that a are in the 10s of thousands and bonuses so they do make more than that but not a ton.

I've looked at few other assistant coaches at other schools and they made more. Luke Murray at UConn is making $750k. Murphy at Alabama is making $450k which is on par with ours but still more.

I agree that that total for IU seems low, which is why I'm hoping they increase the budget like they did for football. Give the program a chance to hire a big time assistant and retain him for pretty much anything except for a HC job.

They were both on the staff at Creighton together, and there's rumbles out there that he may consider it.  Murphy has the same spot at the most money either way, what's he got to lose?

I know we’re all optimistic for the future of the program but a top assistant leaving bama for the same role at IU seems like a pretty big risk at the moment.

im intrigued by Barnett, young and apparently  has some great connections (NV transfer for starters) but seems like he’s trying to get the oral Robert’s job at the moment

Barnett’s, what mid-30’s, something like that? He needs no part of ORU. Right now that’s a bad job. If DeVries wants to bring him along he should absolutely do it and after helping flip this thing for a season or 2 he’ll have a shot at a proper starter HC job.

I'm happy with DeVries but Drake starts 4 D2 players. 4 D2 players. What McCollum has done this year is very impressive.
Definitely not discounting what McCollum has done with what he has. He just didn't have to build it from nothing. To build something like that it takes planning and deliberate execution of those plans. I like that we have a guy that has shown the ability to do that.

I'm glad we got the guy that built Drake into what it is today, instead of the guy that continued that success. Nothing against McCollum, but DeVries had the harder job making something out of nothing....

McCollum basically turned over that entire roster -- had only a couple leftovers from DeVries. He's the real deal.

What exactly did he inherit?  Didn’t he have to bring in around 9-10 players. Did he inherit a staff or did he have to bring that too.

I wasn't really referring to staff and/or players. More name recognition and positive draw to the school is what I'm talking about.

I know he's the real deal. I was more talking about how DeVries established Drake to have positive name recognition and draw for players to go there.

1. McCollum is absolutely impressive.

2. The fact that McCollum only had a couple of Drake leftovers is exactly why he has continuity. His top four minutes guys have played in his system for multiple years.

It drew him and maybe a good fan base but he had to bring in D2 players.

DeVries could be just what we needed and may have great success here but no reason to throw shade at McCollum. Biggest questions for him are what does he do to sustain success at this level.
