Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Just noting that $7M NIL + rev share isn’t good.  I hope it’s much higher and I think it will be.

Michigan offering Owen Freeman 1.75 Million. With these new rates that’ll spend quickly.

Talent evaluation is key. Woodson and Archie sucked at it. Didn’t have a system.  Didn’t know their system.

Let’s hop DeVries excels in this but lots of other B1G coaches ahead of him.  He’s got a lot to prove.

Genuinely asking why you think it will be much higher?

It was rumored to be 5 million this year before the School Funds as part of the settlement.  That portion looks to be 3 million this year.

So just based on those numbers alone we should be at 8.

But Indiana has hinted they are spending more on basketball (double?) and with a new coach you'd think there would be at least a similar amount of commitment.  Which would make it in the 10-11 range.

7 Million is less than we would be expecting even if it was being funded the exact same level next year as this year with the new funds.

Osterman says we are going to be 2x the B1G avg for bball rev share.  Of the $22M rev share, on avg around 75-80% goes to FB and that leaves $3-4M for bball with the remainder to other sports.  Double the avg bball rev share is going to be something like $6-7M, then layer on the NIL on top of that and I think we need to be $10M+ rev share + NIL to be a top-10 payroll program.

These are high level estimates, but you can see how $7M seems light.

That’s pretty big time if true. There’s boosters on board with this if those numbers are legit. Those numbers also mean this didn’t happen after WVU got left out Sunday. Dolson had this in motion at the very least and this was his guy. I’d imagine Iowa was never a real player until they found out they weren’t.

Also, we need a complain about the hire thread for those so inclined. No judgment from me for those that want to complain, but GD the program has been negative for long enough. Let him give us a reason to be negative. This isn’t remotely similar to the Woody hiring.

I think some of us would argue 7 million would be a low amount with revenue share coming in, and that means that Indiana would be spending less on basketball on their share than other big 10 teams, or our donors aren't giving as much.

Can someone clue me in on the wink.

Sorry for the off-topic mods....but long story short, around the time devries was mentioned and even a little before that, magnanimous introduced a magnanimous story about how a booster or insider had told him that there was a huge candidate, without names.

Or maybe the insider or booster told him that it was a big name but not stevens but that the coach had the first name starting with b and last name starting with m.

Come to find out, he was maybe/possibly making it all up. Magnanimous please correct me if I'm wrong

Edit: the insider/booster gave him a main "big wink" as confirmation for a really huge name as future coach

Easily. I know Purdue is scrambling for money expecting Smith to get north of 2mil.

I really want them to lose him that would be funny.  Sadly I think they will keep him, he just fits in at Purdoo.

The Wink was code from insiders and big donors, posted on here, that ‘we got our guy’…just everyone had been directed to not talk, so they winked when asked about coach hiring status. It blew up on here part serious, but mostly farce.

Not sure you're reading it correctly.  I think it's intended to mean $7M in NIL and then additional $ from revenue share.

Yes, I agree I was reading that wrong thank you.  $7M for just the NIL portion is great.

Reading it again it is more ambiguous than I initially thought. But think about: nil last year was 5 and should go up.

Think the tweet meant $7 nil plus revenue share which gets us over 10mil easy.

“Led the league in scoring offense…”

Oh heck yeah!

Didn’t know that much about his history but all of this sounds like exactly the right kind of coach for IU. The way he built Drake, the immediate turnarounds, the consistent 20 and 25 win seasons, that he’s just 49 yesrs old but has decades of good coaching experience, that he’s a passionate kind of coach, yeah, I’m happy with this decision.

Good job Dolson.

Goodbye QB

Good to finally have a coach who doesn’t need a butt pillow
