Guy on HSN, DC2345, posted that IU has passed on Lewis.  Not sure who his source is as he’s just a regular member of the site.  Don’t kill the messenger.  :)

Eh, if this is true it was time. Put QB efforts elsewhere

I blame @rayl456 for the bad news. Let's get 'im guys!

If this is true, I'm not too surprised. He's always "too busy" to make a visit which comes off as wishy-washy. I don't think CCC takes that. There are some good QB's on the roster and after the year Rourke is having, I don't think there would be much trouble landing a good QB from the portal if needed.

I’m fine with Tayven, Cherry, or another old dude they get in the portal. Lewis was always a clout play for me and I never really expected an instant on-field impact from him.

I do think he’ll be a good player though and it may not hurt to have that relationship in our back pocket in a couple years.

I know that player comps generally suck eggs (a sure intro for me about to be doing one).

It seems as though Lewis is a whole lot like Dylan Raiola on Nebraska, who has been pretty damn good as a freshman, and is a five star without optimal NFL size. That gives me a window into how a top ten QB that's immediately thrown into the fire performs.

So, the operative questions are (in order of easiest answer):

  1. Would we rather have a top tier freshman than Rourke?  Clearly no.
  2. Would we rather have a top tier freshman than a 3/4 year guy hand selected by Cig/Shanahan/Tino? Probably not.
  3. Would we rather have a top tier freshman than a junior Tayven or sophomore Cherry? Yes for Cherry (even though he may be good) and maybe to Tayven. For me that's about a 50/50.

I really think my biggest thing is just selfish reasons, honestly. lol Getting a player of his talent and star power ability to IU can make a huge statement a couple of ways.

One, it says to IU, "I see you and want be a part of that".

Second, ... when other top recruits see a player like him committing to IU, they are also intrigued and would be more apt to come and play with him. JMO....

The staff basically wanted him on campus this weekend or they were planning on moving on. He’s not coming this weekend and the staff feels like they can’t waste anymore time. Plus the entire staff wasn’t on board with paying his number so I think they’re cutting bait. Could something crazy still happen? Sure, like it has with Baldwin but I highly doubt that happens.

Any idea on the HS QB's to watch beyond the Kentucky commit?

I don’t. Sometimes QB commits at other schools will keep things quiet if possible until they are ready to decommit and flip. That’s what the Clemson commit that flipped to ND did. It came out of nowhere for most people. I can say that the staff is working on it.

Everyone assumes Cherry will be the next guy but I don’t know that I’d count out Mendoza either. If he develops at all like his older brother he could be a really good QB. Just throwing out another possibility that sometimes gets overlooked.

I don’t want us to go into next year relying on TJ. Hopefully they can bring someone in from the portal with a lot of experience for a competition during the summer. Landing Lewis would’ve been great for the optics, but idk how much he’ll impact a team next year as an undersized 18 year old reclass.

And that’s where trusting the staff decision-making and leadership is paramount.

Prevents us from running into a situation like the basketball team guard rotation last year.

The staff has mentioned in the past that they will look for a QB in the portal regardless of what happens in the HS ranks.  It will be telling if CCC and crew bring in a veteran looking to start vs. more of a back-up profile.

Outside of both being crazy talented, I’m not sure about the Raiola comp. Lewis is an undersized (I could be wrong, but I don’t buy 6’0.5” or 6’1” for a second) re-class while Raiola is every bit of 6’2-6’3 with plenty of meat on the bone. I don’t see Lewis having the instant impact that Raiola has had. And I don’t want that to be misconstrued as sour grapes from when we don’t get a recruit. Lewis is verrry good, but I’m just not seeing him being a surefire day-one starter.

Otherwise I generally agree on your 3 options. I’ll be comfortable with whoever we go into next year with as long as they’re on campus in January to go through the whole offseason as the guy, or competing to be the guy.

I think the staff made quite a statement as it is.  They told a 5-star QB that we’re tired of messing around and we’ll win without him.  People will take note of that.

Let’s put it this way......If or when Coach Cignetti hits the portal next year for a qb, I feel he could have a pick of the litter. JMO

I think he could do wonders with a Miller Moss like QB.
