Ah

There is a lot of insanity happening right now.  Gonzaga is not looking good.  I think we got good value based on market prices and how astronomical it is.  In addition, there have been kids who have signed but are still shopping themselves around.  None of our kids but others.

I tried explaining this in vain earlier in the thread.

A guy like PJ Haggerty, who is really good, reportedly turned down $3m from Memphis as he was asking for $4m. Ole Miss reportedly offered him $3.5m.

So the idea that all-conference mid major guys like Bailey or Conerway are making $1m+ should be pretty easy to see why this is the case. Conerway especially given he was the Sun Belt POY, really excited to have him.

Who gives a chit what these guys are getting paid? Not like we’ve spent so much we can’t fill out the roster. Money ball, overpay, market value… we’re all p!ssing into the wind over here without a clue, lmao. And we really think Trilly Donovan’s basically got the financial figures for everyone on every roster? The way he/they are perceived as a golden source of truth is pretty humorous considering they’ve admitted to not being as tapped into IU. Perhaps that’s changed with the new staff but I highly doubt they’re just sharing anything and everything with “Trilly Donovan” because he’s oh so trustworthy. And any intel from agents should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

I’m an IUBB fan, couldn’t give a crap what the payroll is. Just win. I think this roster and coach can do that. Gonna have to wait to find out.

The point the Debbie downers were trying to make was basically our roster isn’t as good as it could be because we didn’t spend money. (Paraphrasing here)

Regardless, this roster looks solid by all accounts, especially on the shooting front. If our main weakness is “rim protection” I can live with that in year 1 of a “tear it down to the studs” rebuild.

So we might not be a perfect "rim protecting" team or "rebounding" team.... we were absolutely pathetic rebounding this past year, so that doesn't worry me in the least bit....

Really... Trey Kaufmann is about the only individual who really worries me.

And he'll have to guard TDV on the other end, and the South Dakota kid will have to guard Bailey. I like that.

If you overpay a little bit to get the guys you want and have targeted to make sure you get them..good.  For the most part, every power 5 team can afford all but the top handful of guys.  Name of the game.

Then you have to prove you targeted the right guys…good.

PJ Haggerty was an All-American last year...one of the best scorers in the country, and likely one of the top 2-3 returning players in college basketball. Of course there is going to be a premium for his services, he's literally the one setting the market. He's the best player in the portal.

I don't have a problem with paying $1.5-2mil for a starting center in the B10 as that is likely the going rate. I just don't value Bailey as a 5. He's a wing/point forward type player who grew several inches towards the end of high school which defensively made him a "5" at the collegiate level. He was recruited to a program/coach that has historically played a 5 out offense that's tailored to his skillset. If we're paying market rate for a 5, I would have hoped it addressed our one glaring need...nothing more, nothing less. All an opinion of course.

Yep, that's been my thought as well. If some team plays some back to the basket big that's tough to stop, and he may also be a rim protector, he gets nullified by having to guard Bailey out on the perimeter. So we have Conerway able to facilitate a 5-out offense while likely having 3 elite shooters out on the wing. We may see a lot of similarities to 2023-2024 Alabama, just potentially not as fast-paced depending on if coach is actually committed to getting shots up early which he hasn't necessarily done with consistency before.

Yes back to the basket bigs is a cause for concern, but equally important, I don't think a combination of Wilkerson, Miles/Dorn, and DeVries 2-4 inspires a great deal of confidence guarding out on the perimeter either. That's why, in my opinion, the need for a true rim protector is so great. I think Conerway is a good on-ball defender who should be able to hold his own at this level and Enright will certainly scrap his way to making some stands, but overall this roster on paper seems like a rather poor defensive team as a whole. A solid rebounding rim protector alleviates some of those issues.

Lots of offense options. Will we have assembled an Alabama-level roster, or will we have assembled an Iowa-level roster?

Anyone who says they already know is guessing. Gonna be pretty fun to find out.

We aren't Bama.... but we have more athleticism and length, especially off the bench, than I remember many Iowa teams having.

Yeah, I should’ve clarified: I’m not saying this is a final four caliber team, just that I’m expecting more “running and gunning”, so Iowa may be a more apt comparison.

We all seem to agree that this team should be solid on the offensive end, which is already a big deal given our last 8 years, the questions are just around how coach can get the most out of these guys on the defensive end. Hopefully he’s running some Kelvin Sampson style practices.
