And UConn is doing that with Mullins and Adams coming in. If they can convince Smith to take that role, their weakness this year will be next years strength. I wouldn’t expect Adams to get more than 5 mins of spot duty. That’s the sort of guard depth championship teams have. I’m trying to give some grace with it being his first cycle here and hardly knowing his way around town himself yet. Just would feel so underwhelming after the past 8 years to go into next season with Enright / Comer as the primary ball handler duo. If that’s the case I’d love to be proven wrong and look foolish. But I’d internally be pretty pessimistic about the seasons prospects. IF DDV feels like that’s the best way to build a winning culture in year 1 to set up a monster year 2, so be it… I can get behind that. 

Can’t wait for some real news to get excited about.

He may not even know. If he’s adaptable he might just fill out the roster with as much talent as he can and coach them to their strengths.   
 

Sounds like at a minimum we need scoring punch on the perimeter and athleticism in the post. If we get to the end of the month and haven’t added that, everyone can panic.

You can tell some IU fans have had it bad for 9 years.   Some want a loaded roster however don’t want recruiting battles against the top teams.  Really hard to have a loaded roster without battling the best of the best for those players

It is wild that a player who ended up being that good was at VU. My FR year there it was Delaney who was an AA and went to New Mexico. Darius Carter who averaged 7.9ppg off the bench(5th leading scorer) for an undefeated Wichita State. He was the 3rd leading scorer the following year at 11.4 and WSU went 30-5 and to the S16. The starting SG was a FR and ended up at Penn State and was a bench piece his SR year.

And one of those fans, the one that finds something new to freak out about everyday in this thread, desperately wanted Xavier Johnson because he had that "dog" in him.... 

Turns out that "dog" in him was a mentally handicapped Chihuahua...

Friendly remainder when comparing DeVries to Kelsey next year that the B1G will be loads better than the ACC was this last year.   Louisville finished 18-2 in the Acc.   15 of the 18 conference wins were against teams 60 NET or worse (9 of the 18 against teams over NET 100).   3 other ACC reams made the tourney.  Louisville got all 3 at home and didn’t have to play a road game against any of them. So in their road conference games they didn’t have to play a tourney quality team.

He wants who he wants. FWIW,  Risley said that Coach Devries flat out told that conference call that he wants:

• Bigs that can trail, shoot well from the perimeter, and play on the wing with the ball in their hands
• Guards that can
  • pressure full court,
  • screen for the other guards,
  • have strength going to the rim, and 
  • don't rely too much on threes.
• Wings that do not stand on the perimeter waiting for a catch and shoot opportunity.

Whereas Mike Woodson wanted kinda the opposite:

• Bigs that could post up, rim protect, and get out on the break
• Guards that could play off of perimeter screens from the bigs and curl
• Wings that stood on the perimeter for a catch and shoot opportunity when the post got doubled.

If Darian Devries' assessment of players that fit his vision stinks we will end up with a team that stinks. 

If he knows what he's doing and gets players that fit his vision we will do well.

And FWIW, Enright, Tucker Devries, and Bailey fit that vision to a tee. Goode does not. Too soon to tell with Sisley. Seems to me that Comer as a rotation guard would fit his guard profile really well, and Pack would not.

"Wings that do not stand on the perimeter waiting for a catch and shoot opportunity."  Exactly why MM said a return to IU was never going to happen.  Purposeful movement without the ball; a quality each of the teams in the final four this season had that IU (as a team) has been missing for years.

Bad offensive players? Look if you surround Enright with Tucker DeVries, Lamar Wilkerson, Reed Bailey, and then another athletic wing who can get to the basket, Enright is going to have elite assist numbers. That's all you need out of the PG position in that scenario. It's all about fit and roster construction. You can't have 5 chuckers on the court at once...it doesn't work.

Also to be filed under the category of "what Darian Devries is/isn't looking for?" I'm not thinking he is all that concerned with recruiting a rim protector.

For the last four years Darian Devries' teams have had the following leaders in per game blocked shots:

• 1.1
• 2.0
• 0.6
• 1.5

----> Average: 1.3 blocked shots per game

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Whereas Mike Woodson very much wanted a rim protector and absolutely recruited for it each year.

In Woody's four years as IU coach our leading shot blocker averaged:

• 2.3
• 2.9
• 1.9
• 1.3

----> Average: 2.17 blocked shots per game

Do we need a prototype rim protector to win and win big? Apparently not. Florida's leading shot blocker this year was Condon at 1.3 blocked shots per game.

To compare Woodson and Devries' roster style? Every year for the past four (Woody's time in college hoops), Woodson's teams averaged more team blocked shots and more team turnovers than Devries'.

Does anyone ever remember a conference call with former players happening with Crean, Archie, or Woodson?  Maybe we just don’t hear about it, but surely would have.  I think it’s a great move by him to reach out.

Yes, it's something that happens with every new coach. Also, with high-level donors.
