I think part of it is figuring out who the interim coach will be. I’m sure there are a few coaches who want it. It could lead to big money at their next job if they get us playing well. Then does Jordy Or Calbert move up. How do we make it a smooth transition. Things like that.

I think Calbert is the lowest risk as I honestly don’t think he’d even want the job full time - just speculation

My Mullins guy told me way back. That Woody wasn't real healthy and had a hard  time getting around and it was noticed. Something about getting in a  vehicle at a sectional game.

The first couple of years it was his knees... he had the replacements (and took a recruiting hit due to his recovery)... now it's something else? But he can still hit the links regularly... so, not a lot of sympathy...

Don’t understand why folks would want a guy like Sampson or Wade.

I get that what they did “then” is legal now.

But if a guy was willing to break the rules that were in place at the time, wonder if he’d break the rules that exist now?

Because the rules are made up by a governing body with zero interest in enforcing them. They’re meaningless. I don’t think Wade is actually that great of a coach, but Kelvin Sampson has been to more Sweet 16s since 2019 than IU has made in my lifetime. I don’t want a choir boy. I want a ball coach.

I still say call him up and ask him to be the interim!  I darn sure know he can coach this team better than MW.  He would have them do those rebounding drills, which is something this team sucks at and he will get them to shoot the 3 better!

and the random 3am practices will keep these players on their toes. :D

The buyout situation with his contract is really intriguing in all of this.  If he is not at least thinking about another job there is no reason to want that buy out so low.  And you can darn bet the school did not want that buy out that low for year 1.   We are all jumping back on this crazy coach carousel again!   Away we go!

Is 5 million low for the first year to leave for another team?

So why did he publicly dismiss his interest in IU and any possibility that he’d take the job? Why not say “They made an incredibly generous offer and I love it there, but our family decided that this is the place for us”? Instead, we got the “Masshole” soliloquy, which was dismissive to both IU and IU fans.

I've been curious about this too. Initially Brad gave a radio interview where he addressed it. He was soft spoken and kind. He said stuff like Indiana is a great place for basketball, I still have a lot of friends there, honored and humbled to be thought of so well back home, etc.

It seemed to raise suspension that perhaps there was traction with our pursuit.

Then not long after he delivers an in-person interview wherein he is much more definitive about his commitment to the C's, I'm a masshole, etc.

Those two interviews were so close together in time but worlds a part in tone.

Was he genuinely flattered and wanted to let IU down gently when speaking with Boston media the first time, but his pleasantries were misconstrued by Boston media as meaning he had real interest in the IU job? Thus is had to do a little better PR for the Bostonians to more definitively state he's committed to Boston?

Yet there has been a lot of talk in this thread about “culture “.
Sampson pissed on the IU culture

Not going to rehash the Crean dismissal, but there were all sorts of red flags besides the sweet 16 losses which showed the program was trending down and justified the decision.  He was kind of a bumbling, fumbling, dude.   My understanding is he was a little "corny" and "goofy" to work with.  Add the in-state recruiting issues, the "Creaning" (which is expected now with the portal), and his lack of defensive balance, off the court issues, etc., you could make a case for letting him go and trying to step up to someone better.  Problem is IU spit the bit and didn't go with someone better.  In hindsight, the Crean dismissal may have been a mistake.

But, Tom Crean is a perfect example that even a marginal coach with the right attributes can have some success at IU.  Imagine what could happen with a good to great coach.

(PS: Not bashing Crean.  I am grateful that he took the job when IU was facing the abyss and got us back on the map.  I thought he did a very good job from where he started.  Just couldn't sustain it.  Definitely deserves our respect.)

What? Getting rid of Crean was not a mistake. He was 7th, 8th, 1st and 10th in the B1G in his last 4 years. And the B1G wasn't exactly worldbeaters during that period.

Also, Crean couldn't get past the Sweet 16 with 2 of the top 5 players chosen in the NBA draft. How much talent did he require to make an elite 8 or final 4? LOL

So if they are to the point of figuring out who the interim will be, is it safe to say it’s certain he will be gone way before the season is over and we don’t have to wonder if he’ll get to try and ride out the season? I’d most definitely rather find out he’s leaving than getting an announcement of some sort saying he’s retiring after the conclusion of the season.

I would lean that way. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they just announced that he’s done at the end of the season. It has to be one or the other. I’m leaning the interim route.

I would love for Dusty to be our coach, but let's not get too crazy.  We have a very talented roster and we are capable of beating any team in the Big Ten.  I can see us beating Michigan and that won't change the fact that Dusty would be a better coach for IU than Woodson.

He definitely wouldn’t want it full time. Not sure if he would even want it as an interim

We don’t have a culture now unless you thinks that the inmates running the asylum, going out to bars the night before a game, going to the casino in the Bahamas instead of focusing in playing basketball, having an altercation at a drive thru, speeding excessively in a posted speed limit zone and trying to pin it on someone else and losing by double digits in every lose this year as culture then we need to change it!

What rules are there even to break now?  That isn't facetious.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why Coach Woodson’s “broken record” response to IU’s poor play is ALWAYS “I gotta get these guys playing better….”, “I gotta do this….”, I gotta get them better…”!!!!

I'm right there with you '86.  "gotta get these guys to understand...[blocking out] [switching] [playing a full 40 minutes].  I struggle to understand why many of the things this man has made excuses for over the years can't be mastered within 4 weeks of practice. And no Cathy I'm not emotional right now, however, if I see another IUBB bench like I saw in the 2nd half of that Iowa game, I'll get that way in hurry-n-hoosier minute.

Not talking about now. Sampson’s guys were doing a lot worse than what has happened recently. He brought in a bunch of guys with really sketchy backgrounds. There was a huge chasm between DJ , Gordon and the other guys
