They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

Earlier in this thread, someone wrote that Rabjohns (I believe) said that IU was saving their recruiting days for portals players after this season. Sounds like the 2025 Indiana kids are not a priority for the staff.

Sounds like a crock of crap to me.  My understanding is they get 100 or so days.  Sounds like a lot of swings and misses going to happen in the portal.

Fair enough as your opinion, but still DOES NOT make it right to base judgement on the amount paid.

It absolutely does. If Woodson were a volunteer coach donating his time, the product that he's given us during his coach tenure might be acceptable... but at the rate of $4.5M/year, it clearly is not... it's all about relative value and ROI... bottom line, Woodson sucks as a college basketball coach. Period.

Haven't posted here in a while until earlier in the week...I'll give you my stance since I'm bored on a Saturday...

I've been a fan of Woody, thought he was the right guy to bridge the gap and get IU back on the national map. He did so in scheduling...but poor roster construction and false beliefs in our guard play have led to a steadfast tumultuous situation. In the year 2024, where every aspect of the college game is discussed and dissected in so many places, a move needs to be made now. Anybody who thinks we'll be in a better scenario in 12 months is really too optimistic for me. I'm on the Chris Beard train, and I'll simply explain one reason. He wins. That's what this fan base craves so badly, right? He wins. Baggage? Yeah, you're gonna have some with any "big name" hire. I can be swayed to Bruce Pearl, but that has Billy Donovan seasonings on it (jmo)

I was awed by Dusty May and FAU last year, but again, it's 2024. His name to IU will have 0 relevance to 98% of the college world. Just my opinion again...

I'm not always right. But it's not the "time in life" to sit and wait any longer. The NBA background helped with recruiting bigs, and developing bigs. JHS hid our poor guard development very well last season.

1. Chris Beard

2. Bruce Pearl

3. I'll be honest, Chris Collins (since he's never getting Duke job) or Will Wade (ok, I'm kidding now lol)

Looking at the situation on a basic human level (which Mike Woodson is one, mind you) you have a to be a pretty big prick to walk up to someone in public and tell them they stink at their job when he's sitting right next to his wife. Would you go up to an obese person at Olive Garden at tell them it's time to put down the fork? It doesn't matter what his job is, how he's compensated, or honestly what any one of us thinks of his job performance. You don't do that. I'm as big a fan as anyone, but let's admit it: fans as a collective are overzealous know-it-alls. The only person whose criticism officially matters is one Scott Dolson, so leave it to him.

I disagree. If he sucks as a coach when his wife isn't sitting next to him, he sucks as a coach when she is. His wife sitting next to him doesn't alter the facts of how well he does or does not do at his job. And Woodson brought her along to the game, so one could argue that HE put his wife in that situation... or he was attempting to use her as a "human shield" (big, bad Mike Woodson, hiding behind his wife's Snuggie) ...

And yes, at the end of the day, Dolson's opinion is the one that counts, but as fans and supporters (both financial and emotional) of the program, we have a voice and need to use it.

All I know, is that if woody is retained, we might as well cancel our Peegs subscription if we got them. Rabby isn’t going to get ANY info from staff next year if it’s Woody still after his comments the last 48 hours

What were Rabby’s comments?

Beard is never happening.  Everyone should just drop that.  Focus on Pearl like a lazor beam.  I agree with you that I'd probably take Collins over Dusty as the backup candidate.  Just feels like a safer hire and I really believe he'd do well here.

The comments are neither "incessant" nor "unnecessary". Woodson is pretty bad at all aspects of the college coaching gig... calling that out is necessary... there are some who are perfectly content with him and the job that he is half-@$$ing...

Some things just need to be repeated...

This thread started on February 3rd. Nothing has happened in all this time, nothing has changed. Yet the poor attempts at “hump” jokes incessantly continue. The insulting memes continue. The tearing down the character of the guy continues. Yes, it’s incessant, and no, it’s not necessary.

This thread is now almost 390 pages. I would imagine that if all the redundant comments were consolidated, it would be about 40.
You can express your opinion on the coach without being an a-hole. Or you can continue doing what this thread has become and basically be the UK fan base.

Here's the bridge Woodson built

While I don't disagree, it wouldn't be hard for the administration to save face for Woodson on the way out by arguing that he did build a bridge. They could credibly argue that he not only got them back in the NCAAs two years in a row, but made the brand relevant again to high level recruits. And now, that that base has been established, its time to hand it off to someone else, as had always been the plan...

Just need to get Woodson on board with an (in)voluntary retirement.

He has been very blunt in his assessment of what's transpired the past 3 years and what needs to happen now for the long term health of IUBB.

That Dolson was forced to hire Woodson after Stevens said no. That Woodson would not be hired by any other college basketball team if let go. That we’d be a lot better off in recruiting without him. Basically saying that the excuse of saving visits and no recruiting Wednesday sounds like a croc. His lack of presence in recruiting is not only hurting us with players, but with coaches in the state. Hes lost the fan base And in other words, has accused him of “program mismanagement”. I think I covered most of his comments since Friday.

Well, he's right that no other college program would hire Woodson.

I think you're way off base.  If it was the first time she'd ever accompanied him then maybe.  But she has accompanied him to gyms numerous times before and to suggest he was using her as a human shield is really out of line.

What also is baffling to me is how recruiting has pretty much dried up even with all the assistant coaches we have who are younger and should actually have the energy to go out and recruit.
Why weren’t our assistant coaches at that game last week for Braylon Mullins when Painter and other coaches were there…why do we not have a presence with at least our assistant coaches,  what are they doing?

I am assuming that the presence of assistants is assigned/handled by the head coach.

On the one hand I feel bad for Chris Collins as the timing didn't work for the Duke job.  On the other hand, he's "home."  He grew up here in IL, and went to HS in IL.  And I think he's done a pretty good job with NW, even given the circumstances that NW administration puts on it's coaches.    Not 100% sure where his kids are in relation to HS graduation -- I think they are close.  If they have graduated, then maybe you can entice him.  IDK.
