Fire Coach Woodson Thread

I think he’ll want to keep Malik as the #1 option next season, which isn’t good. Liam may help but not all freshman are impact players. You can see how raw McKenzie still is.

The NIL money will have to seriously talk if Indiana wants to upgrade because it won’t be the coaches that get kids to join this dumpster fire.

I know NIL is the new reality, but if a player is choosing IU simply because we are paying the most NIL money then all is lost.  You don't build a program that way.

Yeah double digit losses stink but all of this snowballs from bad decisions before the season even started.   Sometimes a program just has a bad year all around in every aspect. As you said it’s irrelevant if he deserves it or not if they think he can fix it he is going to be here next year regardless if I or others feel he should or shouldn’t be here.

Painter in year 8 at Purdue went 16-18(8-10) with a 37 point home loss to IU and a 28 point loss at the Hall.  Lost to Bucknell and Eastern Michigan. 10 double digit losses in the season.    Even good college coaches have bad years

I agree with this (fwiw). Coaches and programs are going to have bad and really bad years. We’re a mediocre team right now.

Woodson’s getting another year. For me, it’s what he and staff do with the summer and next season. Do we recruit and land / pull from portal skilled guards and wings? Do we develop a modern offense not built around playing through the post? Do we develop back into a competitive team, contending in conference next season with a legitimate chance for a run in March?

Honestly he may well get 2 more seasons but for me it’s next season

We drafted Kelce, Kittle, and Andrews at TE, but have Bryce Young at QB.

Exactly. Because in college basketball, guards with moxy are what wins. But we built a team around tight ends and kickers

Fans have nothing to do with anything positive or negative.    Old, young, die hard or casual fans have 0 to do with anything.   The program is going to succeed or fail no matter how fans choose to feel.  This starts and ends with the administration and people in charge of the program.   All fans can do it sit back and watch to see if it changes and complain or praise it on a free message board

You underestimate the influence a fanbase has over a sports program…maybe they shouldn’t, but they obviously do! Sometimes it is the main reason a coaching change is made! I’ve  even seen players pulled or put back in games because of fan reactions, again maybe not desirable but a fact of life!

If they don't like that plan, then you also need to make a move.

Plan better include recruiting kids that  don’t necessarily have NBA length and all those measurables to be a good college player.    With all that has gone wrong I personally think this one is one of the biggest.  It has been reported they have passed on players that don’t fit the mold he is looking for.   I’m with you as well I’m ready to move on but I was before it started.   I wanted no part of a coach that had never coached in college but that was a me problem.  Once the hire was made I was all in and we still be all in on whatever choice is made.   Not like I’m going anywhere

At the risk of being off-topic and irrationally positive, I’ll offer this:

The four historically biggest profile sports at IU have been (in order) men’s basketball, football, soccer, and women’s basketball.

We are in absolute glory years for numbers 3 and 4; and have the most fun and interesting outlook for number 2 in memory. It’s our top dog sport that is suffering, which is a damn shame, but there’s lots to root for in Bloomington.

Yup, IU needs to get back to recruiting tough, skilled basketball players that care about winning, care about getting better, etc., regardless of where they're ranked.

Not saying you don't recruit highly ranked, NBA type guys, you need some of them, but they need to fit the mold of the first paragraph (Zeller, JHS, TJD, etc).

I'm saying what you said back because of the ridiculousness of it.

What does hiring/firing anyone have to do with it? You're pointing the finger at old fans for the apathy of the program -- that's what pisses me off.

"Even the old fans think that way, cause they already saw championships and tons of success. If it never happens again, oh well at least they got to experience it."

Lmao that's not blaming anyone. Want me to blame old fans? Ok I can. Who pushed out a 2x big ten title winning coach? It sure as hell wasn't young people clamoring for the old days they never experienced. Even looking at Knight's time here, even he wasn't elite every single year like we expected Crean to be.

It’s such a subtle distinction, but since you’re a lawyer too, I’ll try it out with you:

—We play through the post.

—Modern basketball plays out of the post, thereby featuring guards and wings.

The last time Bob Knight missed the tournament at IU was 1984-1985. With Crean missed a 64 team field plenty of times, Crean even missed the NIT once in those last few years.

Down years do happen, but expecting to make a (now) 68 team field every year isn't setting the bar very high.

Himself when he ticked off every Indiana high school and AAU coach and had them sending their players elsewhere instead of IU

Most of Crean's players from the 2016 title team weren't even from this state. That is massively overblown. Especially in today's game.

I’ve said a zillion times the fanbase mirrors the results.

We’ve had terrible results for much of the past 30 years. Our fans are gonna appear mean and grumpy.

This fanbase is amazing. Give them a winner and we will fly to heights unseen.

Additionally, Woody made the Tournament both seasons.

But season 1. We barely snuck in. Underperformed expectations in general (metrics) and blown out round 1.

Season 2. Had the hype. National contender. Underplayed expectations most of the season. Got a strong seed and got blown out by a like team in round 2. Underperformed metrics again. Not a terrible season in my estimation at all but compared to expectations?

Season 3. Off the freaking rails. Again projected around 30-40. Performing about 100.

I think people say, he made the tourney 2 years where is all this coming from? It’s within the context of all 3 seasons.

But until this year, despite underperforming expectations but meeting minimum expectations Woody was getting a lot of love and defense from our fanbase.

Good luck to any IU head coach that doesn’t recruit the state.   One those players was Yogi right? All time leading assist at IU
