Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

Fire Mike Woodson. And I know there is history with his sister, but Gottlieb has been talking about how difficult UVA has had it with the NIL and portal era. Much like Michigan, they don’t accept many transfers. Any chance we could take a big swing for Bennett to get him where he’d have all the resources. pinning this for this time next year lol

The transfer portal was a way for players to transfer for more playing time, smaller school to a P5 school for more exposure, grad transfers etc. It was meant to be used to FILL IN MISSING PIECES OF THE ROSTER, not to build one. Then last year a couple of teams did well in the NCAAs, very well and all we heard was "9 new players on this team with a new coach". Yet it was later proven ie: Kansas State, all of their transfers were over a two year period. I think I can honestly say it is unheard of a team being successful with 8 or more new players in one year. Successful is the key word there.
That is where Woodson is now by his own choosing or a combination of his recruiting/portal failures. Now that "bare cupboard to duct tape a team together" is very likely IU in the 2025-2026 season, with a new coach. BTW, I am still trying to figure out how 24-31 players can be offered to come to IU, and some with NIL money ... saying no and went somewhere else. How does that happen with a "ex" basketball school that has almost everything??????
Woodson is going to leave the new coach with a total mess next year thanks to his flawed strategy. The new coach may need 10 or 11 new players given cupps and Newton will be really the only returners probably. That's woodsons idea of leaving the program in a good place I guess.

Two words: Mike Woodson.

His style is antiquated, his delivery is abrasive, his humility is non-existent, his understanding of how to build a roster simply stupid. He's incompetent, cannot read a room (or chooses not to), he is divisive, and he's protected by Buckner. That protection makes every other negative characteristic moot, as there are no consequences for any of his actions. He has offered a reported 31 players, but hasn't bothered to build relationships with any of them, their families or their coaches. He's someone that no one wants to play for, unless they are paid obscene amounts of money.

I don't see the portal approach being much different. The key is the Cook's and the Simons' open checkbooks.

The irony is that we have become what IU fans have always claimed to detest. We have become that program who simply tries to buys the most expensive players.

Although, We're the less successful version, obviously...

This is true. I don’t detest it much, I just wish we were good at it.

Lol.

"part of what makes Woodson such a good coach is his willingness to admit when he’s wrong. He understands the need to evolve."

Must be talking about another Mike Woodson.

Why did I laugh so hard that I literally almost spit my coffee out reading this statement in the article about Woody.

"He’s in Portal Mode. Let him cook."

Does Mike "Portal Mode" Woodson look like this when his is cooking?

Or does it look something like this?

I keep wondering how he isn't beyond embarrassed.  If our boosters are putting more money in   NIL because our coach is so incompetent,  we have to throw even MORE money at players to beg them to play for Woodson.  I mean he HAS to know why our NIL is going up.  I can't imagine having a job where my bosses tell me I suck at my job and no one wants to be near me at work, so they'll pay extra to find coworkers who will put up with me.  I'd die of embarrassment.

I guess he really can't read a room, and he doesn't have any humility.  Bad combination that is.

I think he truly looks at it like a business no different than the NBA. I doubt he sees high school recruiting the way most coaches do.

If the past 3 years has shown us anything, it's that he doesn't see anything the way most coaches do. He just wants to sit in his ivory tower, sipping wine and smoking his cigars and explaining to us that he's right, he's doing his job and that because we dare to criticize or question him that we are not true fans. The audacity.

Furthermore, I don't care that he played here 40 years ago. I don't care that he had a mediocre career as a coach in the NBA. He can't/won't recruit, and he's a really bad college coach who surrounds himself with flunkies that tell he what he wants to hear. And he feels entitled to coach here 4 years despite all of his flaws and warts. He was "hurt" when we hired Archie over him, despite him having ZERO qualifications to coach any college team, let alone at a P4 school.

Someone needs to tell him that the emperor is naked, and it's a pretty ugly look.

Also it cracks me up when he says we need more talent, but then begs the current players to stay. Never says we have talent but I haven't put them in a position to succeed
Yep we need more talent but I gave Leal a 300% raise to stay. Lol.

My concern is unless next year is a repeat of this one, then I fully expect them to bring him back and set the program even further back then they already did.

It's to the point where we can't get any other coaches so might as well keep Woody for one more year

Unless it's a repeat of this year I don't see it being just one. Even a repeat of his first year where we barely make the tournament then gets whooped I see them making excuses to keep him.
