Though this year’s team sits in a better spot record-wise at this point, I’m having a very hard time believing they’ll find their name called on selection Sunday. Though last year’s team was in a rut at this time, it wasn’t hard to see their path to the dance. I still see a path for them this year. They won’t be a protected seed like they were last year but as far as just making the tourney as a 10-12 seed I definitely still see a path. The difference between those bottom tourney teams and NIT teams is very thin. IU won’t be competed with the upper teams for a spot they will be competing with just as flawed teams as they are. Until they lose home games to lower B1G teams that path will be there. If they have a hiccup against Penn St down the road then their path becomes cloudy. The next 3 games coming up are bonus games instead of must win games. If they lose them all then they won’t be penalized too much. I agree with @RaceToTheTop (more and more which is funny to me) - he is not good. His D is not good. He was getting abused. His lack of shot taking, shot making when he decides to shoot, putting players on bad positions late in the clock, etc. which is all fine but let’s be real. yes, X played bad. Probably made a lot of fans happy. Some of you would probably feel differently if you yourself or knew someone who has come off a major injury, trying to battle back, made a dumb decision, etc. I said before, Fife played the same as X with his “dirty” play and fans love him. He was even dirty in practice. X is majorly in his head. He knows he needs to be better. He said it after OSU “I need to grow up.” The booing of our own players etc. is not helping. this is why they are missing free throws. Shooting all night wouldn’t help. They can hit them there. They are feeling pressure. X will battle back. Just like MM has while so many wrote him off early in the year. X will probably be the reason we best Purdue (if that happens). Watch this video and listen to Fife talk about the anxiety and pressure and what it does. This is what is going on with X. Missing free throws has been a consistent problem, from year to year. So unless they've always been booed the boo birds aren't the cause there and you're looking for an excuse. Johnson has always been very inconsistent even before injury, and if he's not as a 6th year senior he never will be. He's never been a consistent positive for IU even though he has the physical tools to be very good. Fan displeasure isn't why he has his thinker lodged firmly in his sphincter. AKHoosier Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 I loved the effort and energy last night. I'd be stoked if we could parlay this kind of effort into taking down Purdue on Tuesday. Beating them 3 times in a row would be glorious, and we desperately need a marquee win. southsidehoosier, HoosierHoopster, Home Jersey and 2 others 5 Quote

Home Jersey Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Regardless of how you feel about X (his play, his attitude... I am not his biggest fan necessarily/don't love everything about the guy either)... the bottom line is very simple. For this team to make the tournament, we need Xavier Johnson to play a key role. What that role looks like we all certainly have different ideas, but we can't afford for him not to play a significant amount of minutes with our current backcourt options. Root for him. Root for the team. Or don't, if you like being miserable I guess lol. Some really do enjoy having something to complain about more than a team to support. thebigweave and Ngw7183 1 1 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Was at the game. Had some fun moments with great seats this game. Concerns continued: -Free throw shooting obv. Crowd was really down about this. Quite audible early and often. -rebounding. Both offense and especially defense. Crowd did not seem to respond to this much except on the possession where Minnesota shot 3 straight 3s. Ware rebounds with length. Little fundamentals and offensively we never-very rarely crash the glass including on 3 point attempts. Ugh. Positives- Trey G was great besides his free throw shooting is abysmal and he knows it. Everyone knows it. Great game. Reneau-is just impressive. He gets fouled a lot and doesn’t get calls. Mgbako-did what we need from him. More active on D with hands and feet. Ware-did some great things but man he needs to go AT the rim when down low. His fadeaways are such a gift to the other team. Squeeze the orange and go up strong through contact please. Would have made the difference in 4-5 possessions. Other- The crowd booing X and cheering Cupps rubs me wrong. Both guys are playing terribly. Let’s hope we get some things figured out at PG. I’d say go Trey at PG and find a SG answer. Maybe Gunn. Anyway, you could feel a bit of the vitriol from the fanbase in this one but the crowd was also pretty good at times. Let’s hope the team doesn’t spiral. Let’s kick Purdues butt and jumpstart this season on Tuesday. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners Home Jersey, coonhounds and thebigweave 3 Quote

Yes they suck at free throws but I guarantee booing will not help this bunch it will get in their heads. I guess I am not against booing if energy and effort are the problem. Last night that wasn't the case. They were kids playing hard who for whatever reason can't shoot free throws or rebound lolSent from my SM-A326U using Tapatalk WayneFleekHoosier 1 Quote

X brought this on himself and them cheering Cupps was a jab at X. I would go with Trey at point guard, try Gunn at shooting guard and Cupps the 1st guard off the bench. X can sit right down on the end of the bench next to Newton and the walk-ons. Who knows, by inserting Gunn into the starting lineup it might jump start his confidence. I think a lot of fans, including myself, have seen enough and have grown tired of the X show. The guy brings too much drama on and off the floor! AZ Hoosier 1 Quote

I was right there in the middle of the meltdown. But even at that, we had a resume that was tournament quality at the time, had 2 really nice wins, and had blown out the cupcakes. We were in a funk and things looked bleak. But we had at least proved something previous to that funk. This year’s squad has nothing much at all to lean on, zero high quality wins, and several way too close wins against teams we have no business playing close. I personally had a much easier time seeing last year’s team still dancing at this point in the season than I do this year’s team. Hornsby 1 Quote

Some questioned that early on, bc he wasn’t connecting well early on. Now that it’s clear he’s found his shot in college game speed, hopefully Woodson and staff will build on this by running more plays for him which in turn will help open the lane, create space weak side, and give Malik and Ware more room to work with. And repeating myself to death (I know), run plays for MORE outside shots, yes we do have guys who can shoot, take advantage of it Home Jersey, FortWayneHoosier, J34 and 2 others 5 Quote
