GM role

I see this as good news.  We are putting an emphasis on roster building (much needed with the NIL world) and have seen a gap this year.  I have to wander if this means someone on the current staff will be leaving?

Great. I wonder what Carr's reasoning is for taking the job... love of IU? or?... it doesn't seem, necessarily, like a "step up" or maybe we're just paying a lot more? Doesn't ultimately matter, just kinda curious.

Former IU guy, likely big salary, ability to play a real role in rebuilding the program, life in Bloomington all come to mind for me

Wasn't getting a big salary with the Pacers, though? I can THINK of some of the reasons... I'm curious of the actual reason.

I don't know for certain, but I think this role has responsibilities that more closely resemble an NBA GM's. I'd assume he wants to be a GM some day and this job probably is an opportunity for him to say he had more ownership over the acquisition / roster building processes and worked directly with the coaching staff / AD, which would mirror the NBA front office dynamic between the staff and ownership.

Imagine at some point he will touch on his motivations in an interview.

I've no doubt his input will be sought but the actual decisions on who to sign will be with the coaching staff.

I think you’re going to find very few situations in college that don’t operate on that model. But if they’re bringing this guy in and not relying on his NIL scout heavily, I’m not sure what they’re doing. Good on CDD for being forward thinking and addressing a need. I like this move a lot.

It sounds like Ryan is a good hire and I hope he and coach DeVries can get on the same page to address roster construction issues from the beginning.

Frankly, I’m shocked he didn’t hire this role or a “recruiting coordinator” role last year.  Hulls had the impossible job in this role with Woody.  Imagine a coach that didn’t want to travel to recruit Mullins?  Inconceivable!

I want this to be a good thing for the program, but I’m not sure what this means yet.  We missed on quite a few guys that we brought in this year, but I still feel like we have enough talent to win.  For whatever reason, this team lacks mental toughness-  like so many other IU teams the last 25 years.  Talent is A issue, but I’m not sure it’s THE issue.  Time will tell.

Seems this move could also help in securing more money for the program. Part of Carr's connections would be to the top donors like Cuban, Simon Skjodt, Cook, Pfau. Appealing to the confidence of heading in the right direction of continuing to building the program.

I hope so.  I want so badly to build a roster that gives confidence of a strong team.  Makes the off season so much better to be amongst the teams being talked about.

He has one job. Assemble a better roster for next year.

Agree.

I think that the scheme and coaching seems good enough to do produce excellent results with the right roster.

I think bringing in a guy from the NBA also makes sense.  Knows how to work with agents and deal with managing salaries.

Is also able to tell kids he knows how to make them appealing to NBA teams.

I hope Carr has a short list of players he is familiar with from scouting with the Pacers that could be viable at IU. Wonder if he is starting immediately. Hopefully we're already working the "pre-portal" process heavily...

Wishcasting big time, but would be so great if he had his eye on a few mid-major guys for a possible 2nd round pick who maybe could improve their stock at a bigger program. Maybe some value there. And of course, tapping into some Euro connections would be nice.

Very curious to see how next year's roster shapes up.
