Seems like he's still in the Archieball mindset of dribbling the air out of the ball and limited movement. Hoping XJ limits his foul trouble this season. Which is a bit crazy because while Archie couldn’t get them to play another way he didn’t want it either ellen.walden 1 Quote

This team has a lot to prove, last night was a good step but there were still a lot of lingering issues. I think most people can see that but they still like to enjoy the win that is all. Quote

See I enjoy the win. But at the end of the day our goal isn’t to win some non conference game at home in November. I’m more concerned about how we looked and how I think that translates to our bigger goal. Had we controlled the game and maintained an 8-14 point lead all the way through the second half I would feel alot better. Had we done that by hitting our FTs I would be ecstatic. As I said it’s not negativity. Archie was relatively successful in the non conference each year. The question we face is can you be successful in the Big Ten If you can’t hit 3s or FTs. I am very skeptical that a team can be. I certainly shared my opinions when we hired Woodson and get wanting to temper expectations, but in fairness with Miller we'd be 1-2 right now instead of 3-0. A lot of things need to improve though. woodenshoemanHoosierfan 1 Quote

I did watch both Illinois and Michigan lose to teams that didn't appear to be of the quality of St. John's so that does give me some confidence that IU will be just fine in the big ten this year. Do I know that for certain, no. But I am optimistic with what I have seen from the rest of the conference so far and from IU that we will be very competitive. I did not feel that way last year. I thought at times in the second half that the defense was a little slow to react. Like a little of the urgency was missing. We were also getting beat to loose balls quite a bit. That said, CMW seemed pretty pleased with the defense in his post game interview. So, what do I know. Dave from Dayton and coonhounds 2 Quote
Popular Post Stromboli Posted November 18, 2021 Popular Post Posted November 18, 2021 I’ll say, the grumbling about Archie’s offense came early. It was just clear that it didn’t work, even when we’d win. Most of us chose patience and a tempered approach. I think the point right now is that we’re doing extraordinarily well given the circumstances. Stevens, Oates, Billy, whoever wasn’t coming and maybe wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what this staff has at this point. Overhauled roster and some very good recruiting in a few months. New defense that works better and without idiotic lines like “it takes 3 years to install.” Shooters have been added, working within the roster limitations. An insane staff including Matta and Fife. Retention of major assets like TJD and Race and Geronimo. And maybe most importantly a new fiery, upbeat feel to the team. At this juncture, I just don’t think you can point to many areas where it could be going better. Give some time to see the changes and check the trajectory. We’re no world beaters. We’re probably not going to the Final Four. We shoot 53% from FT in a game we won. Ok so we work on it. We will lose games! Duh. We’re not undefeatable yet. But no one has been since 1976. I’m not going to compare this team to that team or Gonzaga or Michigan (who just lost) yet. I’ll check how we’ve done since we fired Archie. It’s a great trajectory. AND I’ll cheer for my team because I’m a fan. Seeing areas for improvement is fine. But I can’t understand getting a win like last night and not just sitting in the enjoyment of it. Kenpom ratings mean next to nothing at this point in the year, they factor in last year's stats. No idea where we'll end up at the end of the year, but winning a close game after having a large lead against a solid team (and I think a tourney team) does not signal weakness, imo. HoosierAloha Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Can we knock off the pettiness? I know I’m to blame for some of it so here’s to me owning up to it. One of the main reasons I like this site is the ability to have differing opinions backed by some evidence WITHOUT the global immaturity. We are 3-0 with a good win against St. John’s. Great! We have slipped up in some areas and continue to struggle with some basics good teams posses. Both of these things can be true, your opinion is valued.
