IMO, Dolson thought he had his guy. Dusty decided to stay . We can still hire someone good. The one thing that we have in our favor is the fact that we have such good NIL support .  That should help lure in better candidates this time around.

I could be totally wrong and will be the first to say so if i am, but i truly dont think dusty is Scott's guy because if he was Scott would have been all over him through his agent and would be offering big money and that extension wouldn't have happened.

I could see how people would think this.  On the flip side, part of me still thinks May was plan B and the extension at UM was confirmation Dolson has his guy. Just my opinion.

For sure. However for me there is no nights off in watching college basketball.   I will be locked in the college basketball thread watching the battle for first in the SoCon

Chattanooga/UNCG tonight at 7 on espn +.  IU played them both this year

Darnit, I was hoping that was going to be on cbssportsnetwork! I don’t have espn+.

Sounds like a person who knows he has peaked there, and might be ready for a new challenge while he still has the passion and fire to coach.

.....AND the potential opportunity to coach in the BIGTEN, better National TV exposure, BIGTEN profit sharing $$$$$, etc.

Why not?

I don’t think he would’ve left FAU last year if he was Scott’s guy!

The weird thing about that extension is that the buyout only went up to $7.5M which we could easily afford.  Just seemed odd to me.  You would think UM would’ve insisted on a buyout well into 8 figures.

I don’t like to be conspiratorial but can we rule out the idea that Dolson thinks he has his guy and communicated that Dusty but also let him know that things can always fall through?

I did a quick Google search on Mark Few and his contract:

As of February 27, 2025, Gonzaga head basketball coach Mark Few's contract situation is that he is not under contract and has a $0 buyout.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • No Contract: USA TODAY reports that Few does not have a contract.

  • $0 Buyout: This means Gonzaga does not have a buyout clause for Few's contract.

  • Salary: While his exact salary is not specified in the search results, he is reportedly in the top 50 highest-paid coaches in college basketball.

  • Successor: Few has named his successor as Brian Michaelson.

  • Retirement Plans: While Few has no plans to retire anytime soon, he has named his successor, Brian Michaelson, as the person who will take over for him at the helm of the Zags

I know its an unpopular opinion but those are my thoughts. Maybe its not brad? but i dont know how you let dusty sign that extension unless you think you have someone you consider a better option.

Right. Now that anyone can pay players, it's clear some schools are going to have increased legal advantages over others.

IU beats Gonzaga in every conceivable metric from a job attractiveness standpoint.

Still see it as unlikely but I definitely wouldn't rule it out.

Why don’t you elaborate here? If you just keep being terse it feels like trolling. What have you heard? When? From who? There are ways to be vague here—other insiders do it all the time.

So if you're serious about this, give us a serious perspective.

I’ve been pretty clear about that. Random personal connection to someone close to Mark (I live in DMV area), and Mark has talked to IU about the HC job on more than one occasion. Where’s he at on the list, don’t know. Mark doesn’t even know. But there’s some level of interest.

Keep an open mind. It’s hard to get people to leave good jobs.

I wouldn't count out Mark Few. I know he hasn't been talked about by the national media but before the season even started there was some back channeling going on.

Searching for that elusive National Championship by leveraging IU's resources, maybe?

The loaded non conference schedule actually made me think Few may be behind it.

I believe it was RTZ that said earlier the scheduling has nothing to do with the new coach.

Simple:

Because we did not "let" Dusty May sign an extension.

  • Michigan believed in him as a P5 coach when IU did not.
  • He has had an unimaginably successful first season at Michigan.
  • He loves it there.
  • He has been offered a far more lucrative contract to stay.

Sounds pretty attractive for him and seems like IU missed their chance last year. Full stop.

I disagree but thats ok! i love hearing all sides of the argument.

How you let dusty sign?  It is not like IU has any control over what he signs.  They can make it known they want him and will pay him whatever, but they cannot stop him from signing

Right? People are acting like Michigan isn't an appealing coaching situation...
