I agree.  Although we hate it, keeping things quiet is important until this deal is signed and delivered. There’s an interesting story along these lines regarding when Bob Knight was hired.

Some of you are aware of Rogers Group Crushed Stone in Bloomington. In the mid seventies Rick Rechter, the grandson of the founder Ralph Rogers, was the president of the Bloomington division of the company. There were two other brothers, also presidents in their respective divisions in Nashville Tn., and Louisville where I worked.  All three were big supporters of their respective universities, ie., IU, UL, and Vandy.

The story goes: Bob Knight was under consideration for the Wisconsin HC job a couple of years before he was hired by IU. It seems like he became angry when his name was mentioned in connection with the job and he withdrew.  So, when Knight was negotiating with IU his absolute requirement was he would not sign the deal until he was present at IU when it was announced. Rogers Group has a fleet of planes they use to get around to all their facilities.  So, ole Rick, supporter, donor and friend of Knight flew out to get him and brought him back for the announcement, and the rest is history.

I heard this when I was working there in the mid eighties. I do know several folks on my team caught a ride with Knight on their planes when we were moving around the divisions a lot.

However, whether the story is true or not, I do believe they are concerned with leaks messing up the deal which is why the word is getting out to quiet down.

I can't speak to the flight info, but the stuff about Wisconsin and the news leaking is absolutely true... Knight was at West Point when he heard about the news leaking from Madison and called them, backed out and re-uped with Army...came to IU in 1972.

Loose lips sink coaching deals.

This story has been documented many times in the media...

Gotta believe that is why this sites juicy leaks have all but dried up .  I'm guessing in some way our Hansel and Gretel ( @ap2345 and @Uspshoosier)have been encouraged to dispense with the bread crumb trail.

I am not going to argue about the amount of people, but there are plenty of posts supporting him, hard to miss them actually?

From the recent survey.  Many would accept him (42%), but I wouldn't say Cronin has strong support on this board.

  1. 5. Would you approve of the hiring of Mick Cronin (UCLA)?

    • Yes
       13
    • No
       96
    • Neutral
       56

Pitino said to hire Beard and now hearing he may be interested also. Also just saw where Pitino will not bring any freshmen in next year. He said not mature enough to play and the same for Sampson. You look at some of these portal guards compared to ours and one clear reason we have struggled. The money we spent on our guards could have went to an SEC guard and Wisconsin’s transfer but we got Rice and other PAC 10 guard. Now Watching UConn and St John’s, Pitino has a legit team and would kill it here.

Unfortunately I don't think this ever goes away. Big reason? The national media that loves to make fun of us, call us insane for thinking IU should be elite, and generally runs the fanbase down for living in the past-- also loves putting IU basketball on national TV, loves positing stories about us, and knows we drive content. No matter how good we are.

I have lived all over the place since I left Bloomington for the last time. One thing I never had to worry about? Seeing my alma mater play basketball. I have paid for numerous extra subscriptions/cable packages over the last 20 years to watch our terrible football team. It is no coincidence IU always ends up on a B1G+ game early season. Because our fanbase will pay for it to watch. IU basketball will always be a fishbowl. The media love to hate us.

Good point. I don’t think there are very many college basketball teams with a large fan base that tolerate bad basketball for very long. Like it has already been said, if a coach is worried about the pressure after getting paid millions and millions of dollars they should probably stay out of P5 basketball at an institution like IU.
Just curious, are you from Oklahoma? I’m from the region up around Hammond and my mom and stepfather relocated us to broken arrow Oklahoma when I was about 16 and I lived there for about 10 years, unfortunately ..lol

Not sure I agree... one arrogant, incompetent hack of a mediocre NBA coach got about $20M from the university... seems to be set for life...

I was stationed there for several years, but no, Indiana/Michigan primarily. We traveled all over the state since there is nothing to do, at least you were in the eastern part lol, western OK is a different world. People really do not understand how isolated it is. That base was 70 minutes from a Target hahaha. I like OKC and Tulsa, southeast part of the state is beautiful too.

To your other point, 100%. I would absolutely love to see UNC, Kansas, Duke or Kentucky to wander the wilderness like we have and see what those fanbases look like. IU is different, whether anyone nationally wants to believe it or not, and I will die on that hill.

Whichever coach is named, it’s because they WANT the job. Scott D will not try to lure a coach if they don’t want the job of being in the limelight. Otz doesn’t seem to maybe want that? It’s something I’ve tried to think about through this process.

Interesting comment knowing he has tried to lure people that didn’t want to come in the past

Our roster could kill it if our coach wasn't a mediocre NBA coach that is still learning the college game.

OMG — transitive logic. To justify why a team that will have to win it’s conference tournament to make the field is better than their actual verified current results of 59 in the NET.

This is a team that needed overtime to beat both ISU and Missouri State this month. They had a big advantage early in the season because of team continuity. They are having a great year for Drake, but last year with Devries as coach Drake was better! 47th in the NET.

Why don’t you give the love to Devries? He was better at Drake, is in his 40’s, and is doing fantastic in a P5 conference.

Nothing transitive about it. I was just responding to who Vandy beat. I wasn't even thinking about Drake.
