we have a chance to hire a new coach, I hope we get a guy who does better than “make the tournament”

So do I, but we have to consistently make the thing to have a shot at winning it, Cronin checks that box. McCollum doesn’t.. yet. That’s all I was saying.

Some good stuff today on the thread, keep up the good work

Listen if someone posts a picture of a plane, I’m gonna call it like I see it. I live less than two miles from a municipal airport totally irrelevant to the search, so I’ve seen many small airplanes in my day. Very very good at spotting them.

Our conversation started with why McCollum over Cronin. My answer is because I’d rather take a risk on a guy like McCollum who could be the next A tier coach than hire a guy who we already know has peaked at B tier.

It’s completely illogical to say the 53 year old winning 69% of his games at UCLA with 3 sweet 16s and 1 final four in the past four season has “peaked at B tier” but the dude with less than 1 year of coaching experience in D1 basketball “could be the next A tier coach.” He has quite literally never experienced anything like the high stakes fishbowl that is IU basketball or even anything close to P5 basketball. This time last year he was coaching a D2 school in a 2,500 person gym.

Yeah I get. Just for me personally, I would rather take a chance on McCollum. We don’t know what he is yet. We know what Cronin is, and I’m hoping for better.

Why would Cronin produce similar results to Crean when he hasn’t for the past 15 years? Crean’s last four years at IU he went 17-15, 20-14, 27-8, and 18-16. Cronin has lost more than 12 games in a season once in the last 15 seasons. I guess he’s Crean if you make Crean’s bad seasons better and his good seasons just as good or better.

He had a bad year last year because UCLA wasn’t taking NIL seriously enough and people act like that nullifies his impressive career.

Mick Cronin has coached over 700 games. And hasn’t had much tournament success to show for it. I hope we can get someone better.

Which realistic coaches have better bodies of work than Cronin?

Not many.  Tony Bennett and Scott Drew and they may be long shots.

What do you mean? They just had lost their coach (Devries) and roster!!! Highlighted by the fact that he had to start 4 D2 transfers…..And again, pace being used against him without any useful context, whatsoever. They get more shots than their opponents and are far more efficient than their opponents. They shoot almost exclusively 3’s and shots at the rim.

With Cronin we know our floor. We also know we aren’t getting an elite coach.

After his recent comments, I don’t think he handles the fishbowl well.

He’s beating Miami earlier when they had Larranaga, and has road wins at Vanderbilt and Kansas State.

What he’s doing this season alone is far more impressive than what Cronin is doing at UCLA.

With Cronin we are very likely a continuation of the current iteration of UCLA… that’s fine. But that’s not what we’ve all been hungry for. We’ve been wanting a climb back to being elite.

Our fans simply don’t get it. We think that we are going to go steal an elite winning coach from another school. That’s not happening! That line of thinking is what cost us Dusty May. Whoever takes the shot first is going to reap the rewards.

I’m lukewarm on Cronin btw. Wouldn’t be upset, wouldn’t be thrilled. I’d bet my house that we’ll be hiring a new coach inside 5 years.

Well said!

I will never understand these type of arguments. Tom Crean got fired for a lot of things.

But his inconsistency was one. His last 6 years, Crean finished 5th, 1st, 8th, 7th, 1st and 10th in the B1G. Like everything else about his tenure at IU, he was massively schizophrenic and inconsistent.

When he won the B1G, he proved that he could never get past the Sweet 16.

His recruiting was also massively trending down at that point.

Crean had shown the world who he was by then - a mediocre coach.

Don't forget that Crean was one quirky dude.
