Funny story I did at Mitchell Elementary School during halftime of a game his son was playing in. We started talking, he found out I worked at IU and he asked if I wanted to ref some practices if they needed someone.

I thought we were all qualified? That’s why we are here!

In the heart of B-town where banners do sway,

Posters proclaiming, “We’ll coach the Hoosiers one day!”

With visions of glory and strategies grand,

They plot from their couches with snacks close at hand.

“Oh please! Just one season,” they earnestly plead,

“Just give us a whistle, we’re qualified indeed!

We’ve watched every game since the days of old Bob,

And our playbooks are solid—well, sort of a blob.”

With markers and poster boards bright in their hands,

They sketch out formations as if it’s all planned.

“Let’s run up the court like we’re flying on air!

Forget that old timeout—just throw caution to hair!”

A fellow named Tim claims he knows how to teach;

He shouts from his basement: “The sidelines are reach!”

While Brenda insists with a fervor so bold,

“The key is to shoot threes while eating some gold!”

Ummm... this one. That's a very Crean loss last night by UCLA and Cronin.

So no coach in consideration can have a loss to a team they shouldn't lose to? I guess that rules out every coach there has ever been. Minnesota has beaten Michigan and othe B1G teams this year

Kansas fans are getting sick of Self.  They're talking Pearl or McCollum, lol.  NIL is the great equalizer.  The blue bloods aren't going to like the more even playing field now.  Personally for me,  I think there are 2 coaches that I believe could win the championship above everyone else.  Pitino and Pearl are what I would call a sure thing.  Self is getting tired or bored at Kansas, or I would put him in that group too.

I'd still prefer a younger up and coming guy.

There how was that?

I will say that has been made abundantly clear for the last week or so

In the land of crimson dreams where basketballs do soar,

The Hoosiers made a move that left fans wanting more.

Mike Woodson's time was ticking, like a clock with faulty gears,

With each loss on the scoreboard, came an avalanche of jeers.

“Oh dear,” they said, “it's time for change! We need a different scheme!”

So off went Coach Mike packing, like a player lost in steam.

But who would take the helm and steer this ship through strife?

A name arose from whispers—Brad Stevens! Could he save our life?

Now Brad’s been up at Boston coaching stars with flair and might,

He turned them into legends under those bright Garden lights.

But Indiana called him home with promises so grand—

“Just bring us back the glory days; we’re sure you’ve got a plan!”

With humor dripping thick as syrup on warm pancakes in June,

Fans gathered round their screens to watch this coaching cartoon.

“Will Brad bring us new magic?” they chortled with delight,

“If he can’t fix our defense woes, we’ll all just lose our sight!”

As Woody packed his office gear (a fate both sad and grim),

Brad slipped on his Hoosier cap—a crimson hat for him.

“We’ll run some plays that baffle foes! Let’s dance upon the court!

And if we lose again next year? Well hey—it’s just a sport!”

That’s why the media and CBB fans, particularly at Purdue, love seeing us down. Whether they want to admit it or not they all know we are one good hire away from being consistently top-10 again. I’m sure we weren’t completely innocent, but we certainly weren’t dropping bags like the others. Our success in the portal since it’s been legal and keeping good players in spite of poor coaching just reinforces that. We are the sleeping giant Nebraska football fancies itself but without being 800 miles from decent recruiting grounds.

Such a good point. I don't believe IU's fans are the reason the program has struggled - on the contrary, it's one of the program's few remaining strengths. All major programs have fans that can act wacky and sometimes become toxic, especially online. What is unhelpful though, is that it seems our fanbase largely has a skewed idea of what a "successful" D1 basketball coach looks like.

Coach K went to 13 FFs. John Wooden went to 12. Dean Smith went to 11. Roy Williams went to 9. Tom Izzo went to 8. Denny Crum and Adolph Rupp went to 6. Knight, Boeheim, Guy Lewis, Lute Olson, and Rick Pitino went to 5.

Rupp and Wooden are the only ones with a better success rate than Knight at converting F4s to championships. Knight was at IU for 29 years, won 3 titles, and hardly ever missed the tournament. 11 B10 titles. That is a level of success that you can't realistically expect to replicate IMO - definitely not going to flip a switch with one coaching hire and make that the standard again overnight.

Most recent article I could find was from 2022 ... since the year 2000, Duke made the S16 15 times. Kansas 13. MSU 12. Kentucky 12. UNC 11. Wisconsin, UCLA, Cuse, Gonzaga, and Arizona with 10 (as of 2022).

Nobody in the sport goes to the S16 every year. Only the elite are going at such a regular frequency. IU has been far from elite since Knight left. From 1992-2000, Knight was pedestrian by his standards. He still won almost 20 games and made the tournament each year. By non-Blue Blood standards, that's a pretty decent stretch. But people are unimpressed by Cronin going dancing every year from 2010-11 through 2022-2023 or "only" having four S16s.

Most coaches never win a title. A guy who can consistently make March Madness - given enough time - is more likely to eventually break through and win a title than any school - IU or not - is to hire the next Bob Knight.

Indiana men's basketball announcement said

We retire Coach Woody - his last season is dead.

We lingered and laughed like loons at the moon

Will Brad, Mark or Dusty or all three be here soon?

Then a coach selection poetry slam was proposed

But we'd rather get the team over the f***in' hump with prose!
