I would guess it’s both.  If Brad doesn’t want the job, he is still a great source for thoughts on who would do well at IU.  He is the GM of the current NBA Champions… he knows personnel decisions.

Why on earth would we have Stevens consult on our hiring decisions? He hasn’t been around the college game for 12 years. 12 years! This **** is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s

They could hire Gates tomorrow and even with an 0-18 conference record on his resume they would still be in better shape than they have been the last 4 years.    Definitely could aim higher however if he actually was hired they would have hired an actual college basketball coach that is well respected and looked at as a very good young coach.   There is a reason he is getting mentioned by national writers.  It’s not just message board posters pushing it.   In my opinion it doesn’t get down to him but if we ended with Gates I would be on board snd ready to roll.   Probably most would turn their nose up at it and make fun of it

He is the living, walking, talking embodiment of “losing the press conference but winning a ton basketball games at IU.”

“What does my drinkin have to do with my knowledge of the game” .. or something like that. If I were convinced he did not have an alcohol problem any more and would not relapse that would help. I would also have to hear more about the event to think the female was the aggressor but that seems a stretch.

Even if he came and had success right away the risk of another drunken problem is not something I would take lightly if I were the AD. Especially if I had Few, May or Pearl as alternatives.

I really like President Pam, but I don't see her signing off on a coach with DV allegations. Add the alcohol issue and I don't think Beard makes it to the discussion phase.

Like him or not, he is one of the best minds in basketball.

He runs the Boston Celtics and is the NBA Exec of the Year.  It’s not like he only knows NBA bball and can’t understand college bball.  He has done the college thing and he was awesome at that too.

Beard purely as a coach would be a home run.

But also one more of these videos from a complete implosion.

Dolson needs to tread lightly.

Seems to be very, very inebriated. That was from his time at Texas. Certainly possible that he has gotten help since then.

I don’t think that people understand just how extraordinary 108-70 is at FAU. A 4,000 seat arena that was half sold for home games. Long road trips for all conference road games. No workout facilities. Campus and area of the country that had zero interest in hoops. Terrible team history. He won 35 games in that scenario and went to the NCAA championship game. And in case people thought it was a fluke, he then moved to a tougher conference and won 25 games. With Dusty, Johnell Davis was unstoppable- with Calipari he kinda sucks.

Dusty May has an incredible talent evaluation eye. The kids that he got at FAU, and now the ones he assembled at UM are really really good and were consistently undervalued , but not undervalued by Dusty. And then he develops them.

Sounds like a guy we hired to coach our football team recently.

If I’m Michigan I announce an extension with Dusty minutes before tipoff if the 2 agree to it today however if Dusty doesn’t sign an extension within the rest of the season I believe that shows his hand and going to IU is very likely

I wish Dolson would ignore “Indiana ties” from his criteria and go after sure fire winners. Stevens and May are both big gambles

This is 100% the case in my mind.  If I’m Vegas, my odds on favorite is Dusty by a mile until an extension is signed.

I honestly don’t think he’s the next best guy or anything even close.  I think Hurley, Oats, McCasland, Painter, Pearl, Sampson, and several others are better.

But he’d give us a real basketball coach with a chance.  I’m a little worried for him tbh, because I don’t know if he’s a strong enough personality.  But if he wins enough, it’ll work out.

Fife and Howard end up back on staff.  And maybe Mullins too. (My big, out there, guess)

Every coach outside Pitino and Self are probably going to be gambles. I’m sure there are others but you get my point.

I also agree that those guys are all better but none of them are leaving an already established program imo. I think McCasland goes to Texas if that opens up.

I’d love to land Beard. If we don’t land Beard but land some other top coach, I’d love that too. But if we, knowing Beard would take the job, end up hiring a Ben McCollum or some other either unproven or unremarkable guy, that’ll be a huge gut punch. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what I’m expecting given this administration’s track record.

I believe strongly in personalities mattering. I was around Micah for quite some time and never believed for a second he exuded anything special and my friend played for Dusty and said the same thing. He never for a second thought, wow, this guy is going places.

it doesn’t mean they can’t succeed but if you’ve been around crazy successful people they usually have an aura about them and not sure Dusty does

Truthfully i want no part of McCollum. It’s not even that I don’t think he’s a good coach. He obviously is but their style is like watching paint dry for me and i think he’d run into issues that Tony Bennett had at the end in that good players wont want to play in that system
