People won’t be able to get past the winless conference thing but Gates can coach. He would be fine if he were to be hired.  Big time recruiter that kids today will line up to play for.  Anything that could go wrong last year for him went wrong.   Doubt he will be the choice but he will keep grinding and moving up the coaching in a couple years.   Was an assistant under Hamilton 
 

McCasland is a a great choice as well and will probably actually be on IUs short list.   Problem with him is he is a Texas guy through and through with no Midwest connections.   He has shown the ability to adapt to his players.  N Texas teams played at a very slow pace which I expected him to do at Texas Tech however his offense this year is explosive.  If you haven’t watched them play I suggest you do.   If he is the choice he will succeed.   Was an assistant under Drew at Baylor 

 

I’ve had a lot of concerns about IU in the past 4 years about its coaching and recruiting high school kids however moving forward I’m not concerned about them at all since I know Scott will do his homework and hire a grinder that will put his heart and soul into the job.   Old Fart fire up them recruiting threads again because next year you will be busy again following hs recruiting.

And if Scott wants to go with an old transitional coach to bridge the gap then he just needs to go ahead and hire the vampire.   Rick in his 70s is still an elite coach in college basketball.   Crazy to watch him coach.

As another Hoosier that lives in Mizzou land, I can also vouch for the fact that Gates is a very impressive coach.  I like a lot of things he has done at Mizzou.  And I think in another cycle he would be a solid hire.  But with where Indiana is currently at, I think it would be a disappointment to come out of this deal with Gates.

The point of the exercise is to understand what it would take for people to be okay with Indiana hiring him.

Some will. Some won’t. You can see my further thoughts on the matter in the fire woody thread but for all intents and purposes they are similar enough to what Demo just laid out that you’ll get the idea by just referencing those. 
 

IU’s basketball culture is in the toilet. It needs rebuilt from the ground up. If Beard comes and establishes a culture, from the coach down through the players, of accountability, hard work, and wining it will go a long way towards unifying everyone. But with a guy like Beard it’ll take a while for a lot of people to believe that he can build something that can’t immediately be flushed down the toilet with one mistake.

I like McCasland a lot but is he realistic? Guy is a Texas lifer, with short stints elsewhere close to the Red River. My experience with Texans, is that they love Texas and never want to leave Texas lol. Plus I would not be shocked if UT opens again, and I gotta think he'd number 1 short of Drew leaving Baylor and Grant going home to Baylor.

I don’t watch much Mizzou basketball, but live just SW of St. Louis. Always nice seeing fellow Missourians on here.

Mods can delete this if they think it is inappropriate. It is just something I have been thinking through and I wanted to solicit the RESPECTFUL opinions of others.

Go back in time and not beat up a woman. That one event alone makes me a solid NO for all of eternity.

We've all done things in life that we regret, but there's no excuse for putting your hands on a woman in that manner... walk away, call a friend for help... but the path that he "allegedly" took is completely unacceptable to me. Full stop.

Agreed.  I live in the South central part of the state.  On the fringe of the Springfield area.

Very interesting. I feel like he is one of the least likely for obvious reasons. I will definitely get behind him and it will get my hopes up! Just think he is leas likely than even Steven's lol see what i did there?

I’m sure I’ll get ridiculed for this, but for some reason, I can’t get myself pumped or sold on Dusty as much as I hate to say it and have tried. Besides his one final four run year at FAU, he’s 108-70.

And this is just a question. Not directed at anyone, but a honest question.

If Dusty wasn’t from Terre Haute and went to IU, would everyone want him so bad?

Would I be happy with Dusty. Yes, as long as he wasn’t option 2 or 3.

I feel like May is the most realistic because he clearly would love this job and by the way he structured his buy out to be friendly. That said I’m holding out for Stevens until we get a No.
