Beilein buzz picking up on Peegs. Hopefully that chatter is a smokescreen. Would be very disappointing.

Of the names being thrown around, he's pretty low on the list of those I want. So I agree that he would be disappointing.

He's very old so only a short term solution. System coach who has taken several years at each stop to have consistently good teams. He's not coaching now and that likely won't change between now and the end of the NCAAT when other coaches will be available, so no reason to rush hiring him. Then there's his comments at Cleveland which may affect recruiting.

There's at least 5 others I'd want before him.

Not a fan of this fellow, mostly because I find him to be a poor writer with a mediocre mastery of the English language, and a serious need for a proof reader but, I figure he has this right....

How does this guy say the coach must check these boxes, include “established head coach experience,” and then say Keith Smart is the guy for the job? His only head coaching experience is four years in the NBA, and his winning percentage was 35.4% during those four seasons. If we were picking a guy to put in a time machine and come to Indiana as an 18 year old recruit he’d be a great option. But as a coach? Ehh...

I'm confident as hell Beilein would get us winning again but man, he's just not the situation I want. I just can't get excited about it.

I run hot and cold on Beilein. Some days, I think he'd be a good get and others, I worry we'd just end up with what Minnesota got in Tubby Smith.

I have followed that site for over 20 years, they never have the scuttlebutt on things like this until the very end in my experience.  If they are saying Beilein, then he probably won't be it.

Scott has to know John Beilein isn't getting the majority of the fan base fired up right? I mean bringing in a 68 year old isn't exactly bringing the IU brand into the future. Does his age play a role ultimately? I'd hafta think so.

I could see Beilein being really good... but I could also see it going very poorly. If it were to take him 3-4 years to rebuild us he would be 72 years old or so. Not many coaches continue into their mid 70's and so I think its reasonable to expect that he would bring in a top assistant(be it Fife, Cheaney, Smart, whoever) as the head coach in waiting. But what happens if Beilein isn't as successful as we would hope? Does the top assstiant still get the job? Or do we look elsewhere yet again?

I don't know, but if it were my money, I would much prefer someone like Beard, Drew, Musselman, or Oats who we could expect would stay for a long time if successful. Every time we change coaches its a gamble despite how much of a "sure thing" the hire is(as we have seen over the last 4 years). Hiring Beilein means hiring another coach within the next decade which is just more increased risk.

The thing that flummoxed me was he said even Brad Stevens wouldn't check the last two boxes on his arbitrary list. The last two were RMK's approval and approval of former IU players. If IU were to hire Stevens (admittedly, a long shot), I would think both RMK and former IU players would be fully on board.

If he were successful it would still, best case scenario, mean that we would have another coaching search five years from now.

I'm under the impression that Scott Dolson 'gets it', and Beilein does not seem like someone who would fit the bill.

Exactly. Obviously there’s at least some mutual interest on both sides (to varying degrees depending which side you’re sitting on I’m sure).

If Dolson gets it, how could he ever think that a hiring plan contingent upon another coaching transition is in the best interest for the program, players & fans.

That’s entirely too much succession risk. Doesn’t matter if he was hand groomed.

Bears fans (I am one) were swinging for the fences and hoping to somehow get Russell Wilson.

Instead ... Andy Dalton.

I'm hoping that as IU fans, our swing for the fences (Brad Stevens) doesn't result in a three-pitch strikeout like this one!

Steeler fan here.....we're gonna start having some challenges in the foreseeable future as well with Big Ben retiring here in a few years.
