One thing I've considered as well, It was a down year in the Big 12 this year, typically the best conference in America. He did okay for first year there, but I wonder how he would've done if it were a more normal year for the conference?

Fair but wasn’t he without his best player too?

Devries would be a B- hire. Young-ish coach who has done very well relative to expectations so far in his career.

That said, he's entirely unproven at the level we want to be at. Has never had a single digit NCAA seed or coached a top 50 Kenpom squad. His accomplishments at Drake were also partially influenced by his son, who was a borderline top 100 recruit and the most talented player in the league. So he had a talent advantage relative to his rivals.

I would be cautiously optimistic if he's the guy.

That's exactly what people were <fairly> saying about Brownell in the ACC, too.

Barring an absolute miracle, there is no big fish coming to Bloomington and it's clear that not everyone will be happy with whoever the next coach is.  But this is where we're at.  You can cite all you want about our tradition, our resources, our facilities, our NIL, but this is who we are and who we've been for far too many years.

                                            Overall                            B1G

Tom Crean                      166-135 (55%)                71-91 (44%)

Archie Miller                     67-58 (54%                    33-44 (43%)

Mike Woodson                  82-53 (61%)                  41-39 (52%)

And for those getting salty because may be competing with Iowa for Darian Devries?

Over the past 15 years (the Fran era), Iowa has gone:

Overall                                                         B1G

297–207 (.589)                                         143–141 (.504)

So, better than IU.

are you trying to convince us Iowa is a better job than Indiana?

Make a few minor changes, and you're describing Knight at Army.

Yup. I think these deals, after lengthy negotiations, tend to get finalized quickly. There’s a story, I think about Brian Kelly, being on a recruiting trip for ND when he got the official offer/agreement with LSU. There was IMO never a “done deal” and people saying it was were likely either overreacting or conveying info they got from someone who was overreacting / misunderstood the situation themselves.

Telephone game! I’m not blaming anyone, I enjoy hearing what people hear and share with us!

Indiana definitely has more going for it based on fan support for basketball, $$ and fertile recruiting grounds in state. It’s probably not as dissimilar from the Iowa job as people like to think though. They’ve performed better than IU in recent history. For two guys from Iowa, it’s understandable if they’d prefer to be there than here IMO.

I also think it's worth noting that Goodman did his podcast (Goodman and Hummel) live stream on YouTube right after he sent the DeVries tweet and brushed right past the topic on the show. They were talking about WVU being snubbed from the tournament and he said something to the effect of "and DeVries could be on the move to Iowa or Indiana but we won't talk about that right now".

If he really had something, he'd want to talk about it for at least 5 minutes so they can pull the clip and post it separately on YouTube with an Indiana specific title "DeVries on his way to INDIANA????" for clicks.

Feels like just the next leverage play being pushed through Goodman.

Not to be conspiratorial but I actually wonder if he knows more about the “mystery candidate” he’s mentioned but is honoring a request for secrecy.

I wouldn't consider Pat Kelsey to be very far down a list.

I wouldn’t either. I think he was their immediate second right after Dusty bailed.

He also had a mid major resume equal to Devries and mcCollum combined.

Similarly, people keep forgetting Mark Pope was a P5 coach in one of the top 3 basketball conferences when Kentucky hired him. Kentucky pulls a P5 coach almost every cycle except the year they got Calipari. I’m not sure how far down their list they got, but they aim high.
