And I will.  I’m hanging on to hope that aces are up sleeves because there is plenty of NIL to put our best foot forward. But some of these portal guys are let’s say underwhelming.

I’ll never give up the hope.  Us diehards have been through it all.

You can't just look at the name of the schools or even stats all the time when looking at transfers.

Baylor Championship team

Teague- UNC Asheville averaged 15pts

Flagger- Presbyterian 14pts

Mitchell- Auburn 4 pts

Miami team has starters that came from Arkansas St and George Mason

I’M IN TOO LET ME WATCH THE FASTEST BACKCOURT ON EARTH

Seriously my heuristic for every transfer is: Dude or Not a Dude? As I wrote elsewhere you need 7+ dudes to be a final four contender. IU’s 3 returning dudes: X, Trey, Malik.

Gunn and Banks may turn into dudes next year (eventually both will, the question is whether they would as sophs). Sparks can be a dude as 3rd big.

Love? Absolutely a dude. What CMW has done with X? JR Smith? Josh Smith? Love would not be a unique challenge for him.

If I felt we had a strong core of leaders I might feel differently about Love.

Someone mentioned Belichick sometimes taking fliers like that and it's because the strong core in the locker room allowed for a flier here and there.

The ceiling is certainly there, though.  I get the shooting concerns.  But from a defensive standpoint, he's a plus defender.  When Roy Williams coached him, he called him one of the best defensive guards he's seen.

It could backfire or it could succeed wildly.  But we've had a lot of players who basically had a ceiling that wasn't good enough -- particularly at the guard position.  Xavier Johnson was one of those guys who came to IU whose results at Pittsburgh didn't match his talent level and I think the staff has succeeded with him.

I don't think Trey would be a dude on a championship caliber team maybe the 7-8 type player

To be fair, he said you 7+ dudes to be a final four contender......so if Trey were the 7-8 type player on a championship caliber team, he qualifies by that standard as a dude.

Right, he can be a defensive pest as your least-important offensive option as a starter, or a high-minute bench guy on a good team.

E.g. If you start X/Love/Johnell Davis/Leflum/Reneau, Trey can be your best perimeter bench player and you’d be prettttttttty good

Where do you get that Davis would be on our roster

Mostly an IU fan created rumor but I did watch the game with some local Badger fans last night and they were ripping him for his lousy second half of the season. That narrative mostly started after the paper put an article on the front page sort of blaming him for having some bad games.

It was kind of odd, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if it pissed him off. Everyone is different and he may be the type of guy to just ignore that kind of stuff.

I don’t know what the NIL opportunities are up here but you’d have to think he’d be the type of home state kid that could cleanup by transferring to a place like IU.

Obviously all that is speculation, but I foresee that type of speculation to be the norm from here on out in the new world of the portal and NIL.

I can tell you with confidence that IU is Essegian’s dream school. If Woody offered him a scholarship he would transfer. Obviously it would all have to be done through back channels, but the door is open on one side. Trust me on this one. This could be revisited next off season as well.
