If all of our portal players leave, which I'm confident won't happen, I think Woody will still be able to field a team without scrounging the Bloomington city parks and yelling at some kid wearing flip flops "hey kid, wanna wear candystripes this winter?" Yup. Thanks for posting the figure. I said a few times this month, this is absolutely the best year to build a team, or plug holes via transfers. I could see Woodson and Matta doing some good work on transfers. I'm too the point I don't think we'll have a "lost" year at all. Dalton26 1 Quote

One went to Purdue (Kip Jones) and the other to IU (Jeff Oliphant). They're the same age as me. Ollie probably played with those guys. Reminds me of Andrean (a high school very near where I grew up) five years earlier. They had Jim Bullock and the lovable Dan Dakich in the same class. Bullock went to Purdue and of course, we all know where DD went. I don't think I'd be ruffling any feathers if I said that in both cases, Purdue probably ended up with the better player. I wonder if there were any other times throughout the years where one kid played at IU while a high school teammate played at PU? yogisballin Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 I’m honestly ok with not chasing any of the guys that decided to join the portal. I mean, we went what 13-14 days without a coach? To me, they didn’t really want to be here anyway. Let them go!Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners Dizz 1 Quote

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners I think you make your pitch given what you want to do. Anyone not on board can walk. There's a new sheriff in town and I don't think he is here to play. This is Mike Woodson's team now and I really believe he knows what he is doing. I like the kids we have, but if they don't share his vision, it's time to go. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners You really can't blame the kids and my guess is the athletic department encouraged them to do so. There is no harm in checking out all your options, especially when the coach you committed to is no longer with the program. Couple that with the transfer freedoms this year and you are going to have lots of players looking around. hoosierbgh, Hippopotamo, Chris007 and 1 other 4 Quote

I don't blame any player whose coach was fired for entering the portal this year. If there was some sort of chemistry issue with anyone that entered the portal, I agree with you. But unless there is a no brainier upgrade transfer, I'd rather have current teammates back with better coaching since they've already been playing together, some for several seasons. Franklin especially. I think we'll really regret losing him if he stays in the portal, no matter who we bring in to replace him. hoosierbgh, IUsafety, Str8Hoosiers and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post lillurk Posted March 30, 2021 Popular Post Posted March 30, 2021 The goal is to win basketball games. That requires good players. Recruiting is hard, and some of the lowest-hanging fruit are the players already on your campus who want to play at IU but were curious who the new coach would be and wanted to keep their options open. Let’s be reasonable. FightFor6, Class of '66 Old Fart, Hippopotamo and 7 others 10 Quote
Hoosierfan222 Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 It’s incredibly easy to retool your roster now with the transfer portal. Well, I guess saying it’s easy is unfair because recruiting successfully is hard, but there are plenty of options. Nearly 25% of D1 players are in the portal. I agree we should target our own guys, but we shouldn’t be held hostage by them. If a guy isn’t bought in to what Woodson is selling, it might be better to go get someone else in the transfer portal that is going to buy in. That seemed to be an issue with Archie, I don’t think everyone on this team was exactly buying in to what he was selling. That being said, if we have a guy on our roster who is willing to buy in there is no reason to look elsewhere. lillurk and Red1 2 Quote
