There’s plenty of schools needing to be investigated before our program who fired him. We went a decade of no final fours or tournament success, so in essence we self imposed in coaching. But, I wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA would come down hard on IU, while ignoring the ones who actually had players who received money. Although certainly sounds like Crean wouldn't have been against it either. When Thon came most of us thought we were not close to being in contention for him and if I recal later I read where many top recruits would take an official visit if you paid them.
