Stuhoo Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I personally like what Jacobsen has don at N. Iowa. But, he has turned down other jobs to stay.No thank you; he relies on a run and gun 3 point oriented offense due to lesser talents. That is not often effective at a high major with bigger, better athletes. Reminds me of Shaka or Groce. Class of '66 Old Fart and mdn82 2 Quote
mdn82 Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I'm not saying Miller is head and shoulders above Crean but he has more tourney wins, better tourney win %, and a conference tourney title. Miller has been at Arizona about the same amount of time Crean has been at IU. I don't think any Zona fans would trade their success for IU's in that time period. I hope we go for a homerun or at least a good coach with upside in recruiting. With DeAndre Ayton, Miller wouldn't leave for the world after this year anyway so it is a moot point. Much like Crean he has hit his ceiling. I would hope this lesson will teach AD that coaching trumps, if there is upside for recruiting. AKHoosier Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Yeah Ronald Nored would be a great candidate for assistant coach. I'd like that hire, as I feel like we need some youth and energy out of some of our assistants. He would be able to identify with 17-18 year old kids, not being that far removed from that period in his life. He'd be a great addition to our next staff imo. Quote
GloryDays Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I should add he had one top 40 ranking, and the rest were right at 10 or most top 5. He isn't going to improve on that. He is a great recruiter, but you see his ceiling. You can't really say if he came here he would get XXXX player and win. He hasn't done it year in and year out with that talent. I would rather swing at a Holtman and see if he could recruit well enough to win with the financial backing IU could provide. You can improve recruiting at a place like IU. You can't improve coach with that many years of data showing who you are. Crean has proved that.Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile appAmen to that. Quote

But honestly, at this point I think any extension (either last spring or this coming spring) would essentially be symbolic anyway. Crean's been at IU long enough for Glass, recruits, boosters, and fans to know what he is as a coach. I personally don't think an extension will help him recruit or remove any of his deficiencies as a coach, but I fear Glass does think that way. He was recruiting for the class of 2017. They would be seniors in 2021. His contract expires in 2020. Glass is hearing it almost daily from big-time boosters who are fed up, and he's got two more months of it to look forward to. I don't think he wants two more years. He's made good decisions with our other sports (which I know some people pay no attention to and base him solely on what he does for men's basketball). People need to have a little more confidence that our fanbase will be heard. We could go into next season with no McDonald's All-Americans on our roster. The last time that happened was the year before Cody Zeller came aboard. I'd love to hear Glass try to explain an extension under those circumstances. He couldn't, which is why I don't think he will. The writing is on the wall. The Crean era is ending. ALASKA HOOSIER, hsrtxp and 8bucks 3 Quote

The writing is on the wall. The Crean era is ending. As I already mentioned above, Crean's contract expires in June of 2020. And the buyout drops down to $1 Mil on July 1st. If Glass were going to extend Crean last year, I think it likely would've been in the spring, probably as soon as the season was over. I find it hard to imagine that Glass would even contemplate a change unless he felt he had his replacement "in the pipeline" and I don't see any of the big-name guys being interested at this time (my definition of big-name being Stevens, Donovan and Marshall, and I fear Marshall may have "too much Kevin Wilson" in him to make Glass comfortable). So unless someone like Self is bored at Kansas, that would leave the up-and-comers like Holtmann, Mack and A. Miller. Any or all of whom might be interested, but all with records pretty similar to Crean's at Marquette (and without a FF). In which case Glass is faced with either gambling with retaining and extending Crean, or gambling on one of these guys being able to improve on Crean's IU record. Who knows, maybe Self (or Wright?) feels he's done all he can at his current stop and wants a new challenge. Maybe Stevens has an epiphany and decides "I don't want to wait for LeBron to retire" or Donovan says "already lost Durant and may lose Westbrook to the Lakers in 2018; wonder if any college program needs a new head coach?" akhosrof 1 Quote

I think many expected us to take another step. Didn't happen. It couldn't have come at a worse time for Crean. You take that with the fact that media wise Glass has praised Crean less and less. You just get the feel he is coaching for his job. As it should be. He never turned the corner. We had losses to Fort Wayne, Butler, Wisconsin, Louisville, and Nebraska in this state so far. You can't do that with your "good" team at this school. I think he is a dead man walking unless we see an unforeseen thing the remainder of the year. OG's injury shouldn't factor imo.
