Agree, but that’s not what I’m talking about.  I’m sure he was happy Tino got the OC gig.  But once someone leaves, they left, and it’s not always easy to bring them back.

I get what you are saying.

Cig had to say to himself…..Tino was a really good QB coach for me but is this really what he wants to do at this point in his career? Is he really “all-in”?

Cig obviously feels Tino is the solution but I agree with you that there had to have been a pro and con list in regards to his potential return.

Cig decided to hire Tino so WELCOME BACK !!

Getting s***canned a few weeks into your first season as an OC (how at-fault Tino is for Dashaun Foster being a giant Dumb A is debatable) knocks you pretty far down the ladder. I think he’ll be hungry and working for Cig he really doesn’t have a choice.

Whitmer to TB.  Does Cig welcome Tino back?

If he doesn’t, that doesn’t speak especially well for Tino.

And there you have it... Cig welcomes Tino back.

I was thinking of Dane Fife as an example this morning. IU hired him away from Whizzo. Then Fife became available again one year later, but Whizzo did not welcome him back. That said plenty to me.

This speaks very well for Tino.

Agreed. In the case of Tino, I think Cig didn't want to hold him back, while at the same time, recognizing his ability as a QB coach. Just because UCLA chose to fast track his hiring and firing doesn't mean that Cig doesn't recognize his ability as a position coach. C'mon back, Tino. Welcome home.

How this all went down makes me think Cig views this an upgrade.

How so?  Whitmer wasn't an option any more as he moved on to the NFL (unless he was pushed out but we don't know that to be the case).

The only thing we know for sure is that Cigs thinks TIno is the best option of those who were available to us.

Agreed.  I don't think Cig views Tino as an upgrade.  I've said it before but if you listen to one of Fernando's interviews he talks about crediting Whitmer with bringing in a weekly process that Whitmer got from Herbert that was Drew Brees process.  He and Alberto mentioned how helpful that was in growing this season.

Tino had no ill will from Cig when he left.  Tino developed several qbs for Cig at JMU and Roarke at IU.  I am sure since Tino was available and he knows the processes/is proven, it was a no brainer.

I personally believe Whitmer was a bit of an upgrade from Tino.  That doesn't take away from Tino but I am sure there are things Whitmer has taken from the NFL that were fresh and beneficial that hopefully Cig can continue using with his QBs going forward.

By all accounts Whitmer is close with Zac Robinson (semi-likely to be the Bucs next head coach after 2026, which could easily lead to Whitmer as OC) who is a McVay disciple. How we even ended up with a guy like that as our QB coach is beyond me. We were extremely blessed to get a year of him. I have a feeling in 5 years we're going to be asking ourselves "remember when that dude was our QB coach? How did we manage that?"

And again, that's no slight toward Tino.

We haven’t got many Cig podcast interviews post-National Championship.  Here is a good one that just came out.  14:30 in it starts.

I do listen to them regularly. It's a good podcast and this one is a good listen.

Absolutely.  He's up and coming.  I won't be surprised at all to see him as a HC at some point.  I firmly believed when he got to IU it was to get experience he needed to become an OC in the NFL.  He was co-OC/lead QB coach going from a pass game consultant/quality control qb assistant.  I knew he had ties to the Tampa OC and was not surprised at all that he left.  I figured if he stayed, he was only one more year as a rental until he left to go back to the NFL.

I would be shocked if Cig did not know that when he was hired what his goals were.

College football is a grind with recruiting, the portal, and dealing with 18-22 year olds.  If you are coming from the NFL, it's likely you either are coming to gain experience or you weren't as successful and decided you would go back to college to have more success.  I am waiting for Matt Patricia and Arthur Smith at OSU to jump back to the NFL.  They won't be long at OSU when the right opportunity comes calling.

Isnt today signing day?  Do we have a thread discussing this?  Do we have any concerns/hope?

It’s old signing day. I’m not sure we’ll have any activity today.
