I'm just going to chime in on Joey Brunk. I feel like I'm in the minority in that I prefer we bolster the 5 before we target a shooter. The first reason for this is that I think the high volume of poor shooting is leaving this year. I made this point elsewhere, but it was the Morgan/Langford/McRoberts/Fitzner that really killed our 3pt shooting percentages. Those guys took a ton of our attempts, and each of the 4 was under our average. Which means this will literally be addition by subtraction as to the 3pt shooting (maybe not as to the overall efficacy of our offense). Take those 4 guys out, and our 3pt percentage would at least put us at average, ideally opening the lane up for our offense to run better. I might be wrong, but the 3pt shooting still feels like something that will get better. Next, Juwan had to play most of our minutes at the 5 this year. He was out of position, and still handled most of those minutes. Trayce will not be a better post defender than Juwan next year. No one else is coming in. No one else showed me they are ready to defend opposing 5s. And shoot, De'Ron is decently effective there, but he might be injury prone, and is usually foul-prone. Simply put, I do not feel comfortable going into next year with no one else coming in to help us guard the 5. I think we need two legitimate 5s on the roster. Playing a 6'8" center just doesn't cut it. Now let's look at the actual player, and the effect he can have on our offense. I spend a lot of time looking at the barttorvik.com PORAPGATU! stat. That is, Points Over Replacement Per Adjusted Game At That Usage. It's an attempt to gauge an individual player's value over other players. For the full explanation, go here: https://www.bigtengeeks.com/new-stat-porpagatu/ The short story here is that after Romeo and Juwan, Indiana's roster was not good. Many subpar players soaking up minutes, if what we want is success in the B1G and tourney. Here's just a quick look. Look at the PRPG! stat, 3rd column after names. Notice that the good teams are 4-6 players deep with good players: Duke Virginia MSU Michigan Purdue (this one was eye-opening) Even Iowa Now here we are. We have Romeo and Juwan, very good (although not elite). And then we have bench players when comparing to teams above. And so people say they think a shooter will fix things or whatever, but to me we just need elevated play 1-5. For what it's worth, I wonder what, schematically, Archie could do (or do better) to put guys in a better position to succeed. That's not what I'm going after here, and I'm trying to avoid it. Evan Fitzner was supposed to come in and bring a threat. Last year at St. Mary's his PRPG! was just a 1.1. He was not an impact player or transfer. He was down to 0.8 this year, for some reason unable to maintain his 40% 3pt shooting. We all saw the open looks that didn't go down, so I don't blame that on Archie. De'Ron, as much as we love him, is still just a 1.3 PRPG!. Joey Brunk this year at Butler was a 2.5 PRPG!. Not a star, but that's at least the level of play that can keep up with other rosters' role players. If he were to come, that would be higher than anyone we have returning. He buys us two years of very good depth at a position that is difficult to fill. I think he'd be a huge get.17 points

The way it was explained to me he doesn't feel like he fits in with Jordan's system. He was recruited by Holtman but he really wanted to come to IU but didn't want to play for Crean. I was told around the Crossroads Classic that he was going to be a grad transfer and IU was a likely destination.13 points

The Season Is Finally Over, Now Where Does This Program Go?

It starts before we ever get a commit in the 20 or 21 classes. If we’re counting on the 20 and 21 classes to find those players were in deep trouble. I’m not around the players so I don’t see what the coaches do. My “leadership training” comes from a completely different background but has shown to be highly effective. (Not me, the form in which it is engrained in the person) I’ve seen Durham show some fight and a bit of DAWG. I think there is a ton untapped that needs to come out. I believe Green cares but hasn’t always been geared towards lifting his teammates to a higher level. Phinisee absolutely has to take on a leadership role. Look at the teams, just in the Big Ten who are excelling. Winston, Simpson, and Edwards are all leading. We need that from Phin so by his junior and senior years it’s not even a question. If I’m Archie I’m putting this on those 3 players and adding Davis in too. He has spoken about this but needs to prove it. It’s not enough for Durham to get in Cook Hall to get shots up. He needs to be pulling Green, Anderson, and Franklin (when he arrives) in and setting up competitions. Best out of 100 threes gets dinner from the others. First one to miss a free throw has to wear a shirt that says “player X is better.” We need competition between Green and Phinisee everyday. We need them to run open gyms with stakes that will have them getting on teammates for missing rotations or dogging it. One player coming in (Romeo this past season) isn’t going to fix it. There needs to be a CULTURE of do your job to the best of your abilities, all the time and hold your teammates accountable. We’re currently not close. Our talent might not have been that great. I think we had talent, some hurt and some young. When you have that you get inconsistency but (!) to go 1-12 during that stretch is more than just talent. It’s coaching, it’s chemistry, it’s culture, it’s pride, it’s effort, it’s confidence and we lacked a whole lot of that more than we lacked talent. You don’t beat the brakes off Marquette (playing well at the time), beat MSU x2, Wiscy, etc. if you don’t have some talent. Where was the player leadership that said “this isn’t how I’m going out?!” We didn’t have it. We had a bunch of players just going with the flow. When things were going well they were excited and into the game. When things weren’t going well it was about individuals. Give me a Yogi and Bryant screaming at each other. Give me a Hulls that’s kicking a ball after defeat. We need DAWGS that hate losing. That’s when the CULTURE will return to the glory days. That’s when we go into games knowing we’re going to win. We have players putting up shots hoping they’ll go in, not expecting it. We have players that aren’t too upset when they miss a rotation or don’t close out to contest a shot. Give me players that are pissed when a teammate is dogging it or doesn’t hit a shot because they haven’t been in the gym grinding it. Give me players that live basketball. It doesn’t make it right or OK, but we were some BS HORSE shots from being like 21-11 and having a relatively happy fanbase, or some entitlement issues away from maybe even being about 24-8 and possibly still playing. (If if’s and but’s blah blah, I know) For all of our on-court flaws, there was some flukey shizz that tanked this season as much as anything in my opinion. DISCLAIMER: I have no idea if my math is right, I just started typing.6 points -
Props to Chris for using discretion with this information. Probably not easy not to share every piece of information he gets. But putting that info out there in December wouldn't have been a good decision on many levels. Both a gentleman and a scholar. I was with some Butler fans over the weekend. They are not happy with Jordan. They think they're basketball royalty now, and don't feel he is maintaining The Butler Way. They also have some weird hatred towards IU and call us rivals. I'll never get that. For the most part it feels like Indiana and Purdue fans cheer for Butler when we can. I have my thoughts on Brunk but I'll put them in the recruiting thread.5 points

Speaking of... The "committee" ([emoji849]) should come out with their criteria before the season starts. And maybe they do. But I find it ridiculous that only after the tournament selection is complete is when anyone finally hears, "Oh, well this year they/we really focused on number of wins vs quality/SOS, etc." Teams have a right to schedule to their benefit. I guess they did somewhat provide an inkling of what they are looking for this year with the Quad ranks and such, but to then hear the bubble was essentially determined quantity of wins makes that whole system seem like a complete waste of time. I wasn't a Celtics or Larry Bird fan back in the 80s, but I have a HUGE appreciation for them now. One of my favorite moments was when the Lakers beat the snot out of the Celts in Game 3 of the 1984 NBA Finals. After the game, Bird said Boston played like sissies and added, "We've got some great players on this team, but we don't have the players with the heart sometimes that we need. Today, when you see Magic slappin' high fives and guys going behind their backs and shooting layups on us all day long, it seems like somebody would put a stop to it. Until we get our hearts where they belong, we're in trouble." Boston won the next game -- and the series. When we were getting our butts kicked in Lafayette and at home against Michigan and Nebraska and at Minnesota, I wanted someone to step up and say, "THIS HAS TO STOP! ... RIGHT NOW!" ... But either nobody did, or if someone said that, nobody listened. We need a player who can take that kind of leadership role on. And players who get pissed when we perform like we did at Minnesota. Watching these guys during some of the times we were getting absolutely humiliated -- some of them seemed as if they just didn't care. If we don't get that kind of leadership and want-to from the the players themselves, we will continue to get whipped by Purdue and by Nebraska and by Michigan and by Minnesota.5 points -

A few thoughts, some of which have already been stated by others: - There are many things I like about Archie. His emphasis on defense. His emphasis on recruiting the state. I like how he doesn't speak in platitudes like his successor. He has the "look" of a basketball coach... for whatever that matters. That being said... he's 35-31 with no NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. That includes embarrassing blowout losses at home to Indiana State and Fort Wayne and losing 12 of 13 games. That's not going to cut it, long term. Similar numbers ended the Davis and Crean eras. I don't want Archie fired, I want him to turn this thing around. Plus, I have little confidence in our administration to find someone better. - Normally, I am a fan of building up a roster and limiting attrition. I think that's Archie's style. However, I am not sure that several players are good "fits" for what Archie is trying to build here. Is it a lack of effort? Are they too okay with losing? I'm not sure... although one of my lasting memories for the season will be watching multiple players laughing and smiling on TV while coming from the locker room after halftime vs. Ohio State in Big Ten Tournament after being out-played in the first half of what was their most important game of the year. I'm not saying their lives should be a living nightmare, but I know I wasn't smiling at that moment. - Who steps up this off-season? The past two off-seasons we were greeted with rave reviews of the improvements of two players in particular. They had many opportunities to step up this season, but could not attain that consistency we so desperately needed. I haven't given up on those players, but I think it would be somewhat foolish to count on them as leaders for next season. However, someone needs to step up with the departures of Morgan and (likely) Langford. Is the leader on the roster right now? Many people point to Phinisee (and I love the guy) but look at these numbers below... - Here are our shooting numbers for our returning backcourt... Phinisee 36.1% FG, 31.0% 3FG, 66.0% FT... Durham 40.3% FG, 34.8% 3FG, 74.0% FT... Green 40.2% FG, 41.0 3FG, 73.6 FT. That won't win many games. I fully expect improvement from all of them next year, but we need some capable shooters in the worst way possible. None of those guys provided us with a consistent shooting threat this season. - Our post game has potential. Davis can provide offense. However, he has never played more than 18.8 minutes per game in his career. It may be wishful thinking to expect anything more than 20-22 minutes per game (if that.) This is not to mention his lack of rebounding that will need to be improved upon. He'll have help with Trayce Jackson-Davis, but I don't see them playing on the floor together much. I have failed to see either be able to hit a jump shot with any sort of regularity and we'll need to space the floor. - What will come of our highly-touted 2018 class? Langford is likely gone. Hunter never played and considering how cautious IU seems to be with their athletic health guidelines, I have concerns about his athletic future at IU. Anderson failed to score a point in the 2019 calendar year. Forrester logged 56 minutes. Thompson played 63 minutes. That means Phinisee will be the only returner from that class with any sort of real experience to draw upon. Need a lot more production from this group. Remember, they are all "Archie's Guys". Hopefully a year in the program helps them improve. - Hopefully Archie can find a couple more players this off-season who will help us win games. Whether that's Watford, grad transfers, I don't know. I do know that the current roster projection for next year screams a 9th-10th place finish in the conference, at-best. Again, that won't cut it. Just my opinion.5 points -

Agreed on all counts. One of my main issues with Archie was how long it took to hold Smith accountable and how quickly he was let loose again. Very much just a slap on the wrist. If a guy is routinely phoning it in during a game it can’t wait nearly a dozen games to be addressed. And when you address it has to stick. Otherwise the players will see that and see no reason to change. Did Smith get better for a time. Sure. But it’s like after you get a ticket you drive the speed limit the next few days but soon you are back to your old ways. Lack of effort has to be punished swiftly and signifacntly with the bench. I’d rather lose with a guy trying than a guy not trying. The players have to build the culture but Archie has to discipline the players when they try to rebel against it. These guys aren’t all sub 200 guys with a chip on their shoulder sometimes they need to be given one.4 points -

I’m sick and tired of hearing about this coach and that coach. You don’t win games unless you’re mentally and physically tough. It doesn’t matter your position. We have a bunch of kids that want to be coddled because they didn’t get to play the position they wanted or the coach didn’t get them enough shots. The ******* kids need to prove themselves. If they don’t want to prove themselves they can go join the e-sports league so they can play whatever damn position they want. It’s not a democracy it’s an autocracy. We have kids all smiles and giggles that it’s over. What does that say about you and your competitive spirit?! It’s a damn shame they get the privilege to wear that uniform and use that practice facility when their only concern is themselves. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app4 points -

If you want to shoot at Assembly hall just go there in the summer and you can shoot around for a few minutes. I shot around at games for years in the 80's and early 90's. I would wait till after the game go down to the floor, wait 10 minutes and then start shooting around with a ball I brought. No one ever said anything to me. He talks about not getting an interview for the job after Sampson he leaves out one key part. He was told when he was the interim coach to not do anything with any players after the season was over, the next day he kicked several players off. I can go on and on about him but I won't.4 points -

It begins and ends with CULTURE. O$U doesn’t have to go through a rebuild because their culture was there before Holtmann. Ditto for UL and other programs. Why, at the end of the season, do we question their heart and effort?! Culture!!! There are so many cliches for this stuff. Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard. (Or adapt and take on a new role) Johnny Dawkins had a locker room full of players filling buckets with tears because THEY FREAKING CARED! We have players that aren’t upset because now they can put it on cruise control. Archie didn’t forget how to coach. He took teams with lesser talent further. If you couldn’t see how pissed he was throughout the year you were drinking at Nips level. I couldn’t care less about star rating over the next 2-3 years. Give me a Race Thompson or Aljahmi Durham that’s going to work. Give me Joey Brunk that can help with locker room issues. Far too often, we had one or two players trying to lift the half ton rock by themselves while the rest of the team wasn’t interested. We need a full team pushing in the right direction. You could see through body language, effort, and interactions who gave a damn and who didn’t. Those kids that don’t need to move along to a better fit. This program won’t get anywhere near its potential until hard work and effort in EVERYTHING they do is the baseline. This program is better than letting kids run the damn thing. Interesting story about the confluence of events that led Chris Beard to the top job at Texas Tech. I had forgotten that just a couple weeks earlier, he took the UNLV job. After surprisingly losing Tubby Smith to Memphis, the Texas Tech AD (Kirby Hocutt) called the Vegas AD (Tina Kunzer-Murphy) ... “No, you do not have my permission to talk to Chris,” Hocutt remembers Kunzer-Murphy angrily telling him. “Are you kidding me? We just hired him.” Undaunted, Hocutt responded, "With all due respect, I was just giving you a courtesy call. I’m going to ask Chris to meet with us. It will be his decision if he wants to take the time or not.” https://www.yahoo.com/sports/how-texas-tech-poached-chris-beard-from-unlv-setting-two-programs-on-divergent-paths-015036321.html3 points -

Yes I was told as early as December that he would be a grad transfer here. But also knowing that OSU is now involved we will have to wait to see what happens. But this wasn't the first time he has made it known about transferring to IU.3 points -

I think people were saying that it's really hard to be in law school while also playing CBB. I believe he comes to IU but not 100% on that yet3 points -

Your first paragraph is definitely fair. They played better than I would’ve ever thought, BUT there are people actually saying we played better without him. I don’t know why or where that logic comes from (I actually do, some IU fans get upset about one and dones), but I don’t think it’s even close to being true. We will miss Romeo, or at least I know I will.3 points -

That wasn't the question. Seems like every little crybaby over Romeo had to latch on to "we are playing better without him". That wasn't the case. I'm all in, all the time, for Indiana Basketball. I went to all 3 nit games. I appreciate that they didnt mail it in game one, but nothing about the play was "better without Romeo".3 points -

Yeah, I mean Smith could get in the gym and get shots up and work on his ball handling skills. There are plenty of team managers who are with the program to rebound for players at all hours of the day. I’d hope if Smith wanted to be a wing he’d be busting his @$$ to prove that he was worthy of getting minutes there. I know nothing was ever given to me and when someone said I couldn’t that was just all the more ammo for me to prove them wrong. I guess he could just vent to the media about how he was wronged though. Give me the kid that’s willing to prove it over talking about it. We need DAWGS. If Clifton transfers - it is hard to blame him. He needs to go somewhere he can get minutes to fulfill his potential. No inside information but I put the chances of him transferring over 80%. Romeo will go pro - so we have two spots.I hope Forrester and Race stay.3 points -
