  2. It's also a chance to gain exposure for our women's team. The raising of the WNIT banner is significant to our program. It's a chance to help build another important facet of our athletics.

  4. I still don’t understand how people say they aren’t paid. They are being compensated more than the average working adult! The amount provided in free education, meals, housing, transportation, coaching, training, medical etc etc adds up to a ton and way more than hard working individuals that have college degrees and work full time Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  7. Yea, just like every employee gets swindled when compared to their CEO/Owner. NBA/NFL players get swindled by owners. Employees get swindled by CEOs/Management If players get paid then they should then be considered public employees and subject to anything that applies as such. If we are going to talk about the unfairness to players, then lets discuss how that is real life for pretty much everyone but the 1%ers. However, players have it much better than their peers. Otherwise, they would just play basketball at the HPER without a scholarship.

  9. I’m ready for the season to start and as excited about any season since 2011-12. Archie has his recruits, and his players have a year under his coaching. I’m expecting big results and some beat downs like we haven’t seen in a long time.

  11. I have yet to see any team in their midnight madness not scrimmage. Fan support is kind of important. You want to see that fan support lessen which is one thing highlighted to recruits from IU, then take away the scrimmage. Would be utterly stupid. Yeah let’s take away the one reason over 10k people show up to HH. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

  12. And we now return you to our regularly scheduled Jahmius Ramsey programming. I'm following both sides of the pay for play debate but if it's to continue would one of you start up a new thread devoted to that subject? Thank you signed Jahmius Ramsey lol

What, you expect me to watch the whole thing, and then report back the exact times Al plays in a 20 minute video? Asking too much. Unreasonable.

  15. Can't you just let us argue, rather than coming in with your information and calm demeanor? I'm with everyone that wants to see the scrimmage. It's the best part. Dunk contests miiiight be so hype, or they might be the opposite. Last year's dunk contest was embarrassing. IUGradman, you make an important point. There's room to consider the show, but don't discount that some of the old school charm is unique and attractive also. We are one of the storied programs that can pull it off, and it would be foolish to discard it entirely. Still, I get what you're saying regarding the optics of a program with pep bands and cheerleaders in sweaters. Hilarious, but also:

  17. I never said I wouldn’t, I asked when it became their responsibility. But in my case, my parents wouldn’t accept my money. I make more at 30 than my dad was making when he retired and I’ve offered. His response: “You don’t take care of us, we take care of you.” And indentured servitude? Really? I don’t think you understand how indentured servitude works. These kids aren’t forced to go to college, and they aren’t forced to stay after they sign their contract. They could go to the G league. They could play overseas. Nobody is forcing them to do anything. Give me a break.

  18. When they major in something that does not have a bright economic future and then complain about it, I don't feel sorry for them. My 2 boys did it right. They went to trade schools. One as an electrician and the other in plumbing, heating and HVAC.They will make more money in their lifetime than those that major in subjects that have no future. 19. Did I miss something? I didn't realize their diplomas were revised to add an asterisk next to their major... And taken advantage of? You think those players didn't know exactly what was going on? I'm sure most of them weren't brain surgeons but i'm pretty sure they realized something was up when they saw the other 40K students actually going to class and working. Not to mention the fact that more than one flat out admitted knowledge of the fact that they were being guided into BS courses. To address the previous post, if these players don't value the free education they are receiving and don't use it to further themselves professionally, that's their problem. I know I sure as heck would've appreciated it, but I'm 5'8" and not particularly athletic so nobody was willing to pay my way because I could play a game. These players receive a free education and hundreds of thousands (or sometimes millions) more over a lifetime because they could play basketball. It may not be immediate, but it pays in the long run. And it pays a lot more than a high school education alone would have. And if a player is one-and-done, then yes, they are being compensated by NBA teams. The one year in college gave them a platform to promote themselves and earn a contract that's worth more money than most people will see in a lifetime. Finally, you've had a few posts where you talk about them supporting their families. Maybe my parents were old-school in the way they raised me, but when did it become the kid's responsibility to support their parents financially?

  20. Hoosier hysteria can be boring but that is reason they dont charge. It is more about supporting the team and showing recruits our passion. It is a chance for a early look at our team that usually means nothing but take the scrimmage away and it would be hard for me to attend Sent from my SM-G920V using BtownBanners mobile app

  21. We all have our opinions on this matter. My opinion is that if they want to be paid to play they should be playing professionally. Should we also pay the high school players? Middle school?? Grade school??? I can't think of any other amateur endeavor where the participants get paid. I would have been thrilled for one of my sons to have been able to play the game they love and get a free college education for doing it.

  23. The no scrimmage talk worries me a little bit. I feel like that’s the only part of the event with any substance and though it’s just a light scrimmage it can give you a feel for how the team is meshing together. 27. Generic recruiting update on TJD from the Indy Star but one item in particular: “I don’t know if I could do the whole ‘Rome’ thing,” Jackson-Davis said this week, referring to the length of New Albany star Romeo Langford’s recruitment before committing to Indiana in the spring. “I don’t know how he did that. That’s like seven more months. I don’t know if I could do that.” Later in the article, he does say that his commitment might not necessarily come during the November signing period but certainly not lasting into April. He also again stresses that he's not an IU lean despite the rumors that abound. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/high-school/2018/09/19/trayce-jackson-davis-could-make-college-decision-soon/1350924002/

  28. Since this thread is completely derailed already......I agree completely. I just told a nephew the other day to seriously consider a trade. He's an indifferent student, but capable mechanically, so why go to college and rack up debt? His older brother and sister both went to IU, so he thinks he needs to also.

  29. The kids on academic scholarship have more reason to complain than those on athletic scholarship. Either way, both types know exactly what they are signing up for and do so voluntarily. A scholarship is the best deal most of them get since the reality is that the supply of raw, unproven potential is high and the demand for it is low. Whining because the market doesn't value their time and effort as much as they do is nothing more than entitlement.

  31. I like this debate but will only make one more response on this in this thread as we are a little off topic I am arguing that student athletes get more value than the average student, yet the average student is paying tens of thousands out of pocket to get less than the athlete gets for free. That family that you referenced would have been saddled with debt but instead are relieved of any financial obligation. They basically took an expensive child off their bottom line and put it on the university so if that isn’t immediate help I don’t know what is. Secondly, the value of an education and experiences they have living on campus is worth a lifetime of money and stability. Without college and these universities offering, many would not go to college at all and would stay stuck in a bad situation. Net net is that the value a school offers is large, impactful and immediate as well as long term. The odds of these kids making it to the pros and becoming millionaires is slim and taking a $50k handout from a leach isn’t going to last long without the skills toward continued employment/career Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  38. This is more idiotic than any of the Fred Glass conversations. What in the hell does a scrimmage have to do with the other stuff? I would hate to insult the recruits by giving the paying customers what every team in the country has. Nothing like turning a crowd of over 10k into 2k for recruits if there were no basketball. But I guess you have to actually go to the event to understand it as a fan instead of being 50 living vicariously through a 16 year old. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

  41. Here's the thing though, there is nothing that says they have to go to college. They get more than just the scholarship money, the stipend, the free meals, clothes, etc. they get a chance to build their brand. That's why you don't see more kids going overseas or to the G-League from high school. That and the extra money they can get through committing to a school. How much do NBA owners make compared to what they pay their players? How much do schools make compared to what they spend on scholarships, world class facilities, top notch trainers and coaches, stipends, housing, food, transportation, etc.? IU Baseball Commits

I was talking to a returning position player a few weeks ago and had a pretty interesting conversation. It's probably not worth starting a new topic, but thought I'd share a bit for those following IU baseball. Trying to recall what he told me, but the main points were Mercer's coaching philosophy is more of a "professional baseball" approach that Lemonis. He said that there isn't much emphasis on bunting and "small ball" in general. Essentially, from what I gathered, hitters are looking to drive the ball regardless of count and situation (with some exceptions, I'm sure). Overall, there's a lot more BP, weight lifting, and emphasis on nutrition and conditioning. He said that team chemistry is good right now and that the new coaching staff has been well received by the players. Of course, it's hard to keep everybody happy during the season, so I'm sure some things will change in that regard. But, it sounds like so far, so good from his standpoint.

  43. In terms of advanced statistics for those of us that enjoy looking at them: IU S&P+ Rank: 23 IU Off. S&P+ Rank: 52 IU Def. S&P+ Rank: 16 IU Special Teams S&P+ Rank: 96 MSU S&P+ Rank: 20 MSU Off. S&P+ Rank: 34 MSU Def. S&P+ Rank: 28 MSU Special Teams S&P+ Rank: 29 Bill Connelly gives us a 53% chance of winning this game. ESPN's Football Power Index still ranks MSU as the 13th. best team in the country and therefore only give us 21% chance of winning. I'm trying to keep my expectations in check as I had us losing this game before the season started; but with the way we've been playing and the improvement we've seen week after week, its hard not to get excited....this is just a huge opportunity for this team!

  45. In regards to this game, if IU can run the ball and stop the run I like the Hoosiers' chances. It will all come down to the front 5 and front 7 though. I'd like to see some defensive takeaways that results into points. If that happens IU has a really good chance winning the game.
