(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS

Recommended Posts

UPSET ALERT.  In OT, Floyd Central knocks off #1 ranked New Albany 49-47; first win for FC over NA in 14 years.  FC led from the opening tipoff often by double digits until NA made a 4th Q comeback but could never get the lead.  FC played really good defense and held Romeo to 15 points.

He isn't that great. He looks good when he plays against teams with 5"10 guards. Damezi is just as good IMO.

I hear ya pumping your team. Just to let you know, per FC head coach...Romeo was playing with a high fever and STREP.

Hopefully Romeo’s recruitment follows Trae Young’s. Young stayed home and went to a Oklahoma team that finished 11-20. Oklahoma held off Kansas and Kentucky and the usual suspects. Young is killing it being the guy on the hometown team with lesser talent then others

Romeo had strep like 5 days ago. They were looking for any excuses they could. I guess it didn't help they put him 30 feet from the basket against a 2-3 zone. But Langford really didn't play well at all. I still want him here because Archie will maximize his potential, but Romeo should've went to prep school.

Go to bed

Yeah pretty silly.  He very good.  I'd put him ahead of Gary Harris but slightly behind Eric Gordon at the same age.

I think he’s better than Gary Harris. But he can’t touch Gordon. Eric Gordon was just head and shoulders above everyone else

This might be true, although Gary Harris impacts the game on D as much as on O. Not sure RL is a defensive stopper at all.

Disclaimer: I loved GH.

Clearly RL is very, very good but much like Blackmon, Calipari picked a different SG. He deserves his 5 star rating but as I've said all summer we won't be winners or losers next year because of RL. He needs help. Most do.

I'm starting to think that Romeo wouldn't be the saving grace that many are hoping he would be... He's very talented, of course, but idk.. I would not be surprised if he had a James Blackmon type of impact as a freshman, wherever he goes.

I think it's important to remember that as talented as RL is, he is still just a piece of the puzzle. He would no doubt help us, but he has to fit and not disrupt the chemistry of the team. I think that is always the worry with one and dones.

Romeo loses a game and people are turning on him?

I've been fortunate enough to see him play in person a few times. He's a great player. Probably should be closer to 10-15 in his class, yes, but a great player none the less.

He's not a one and done. He's not going to carry (alone) a big time program his first year on campus. Which is completely fine. There are very few players each year who can do that.

Romeo would start at nearly in college in the country on day one. He is coachable and gives effort. He's a good teammate. His commitment would certainly help on the court. It would help even more off the court.

New Albany newspaper write-up:

FLOYDS KNOBS — All streaks must come to an end.

Floyd Central finally got the proverbial the monkey — or in this case Bulldog — off its back with a 49-47 overtime victory Friday night over No. 1 New Albany on Joe Hinton Court. With a sellout crowd of 3,000 looking on, the 14th-ranked Highlanders never trailed and broke a 20-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.

“It was a great atmosphere and really good for our guys in that respect and we had to deal with some adversity,” Floyd head coach Todd Sturgeon said. “Brendan Hobson doesn't play and Cobie is right now going to the hospital because he got so dehydrated in the second half. We had a lot of guys step up to get this big win. To hold that team in the 40s through an overtime ... are you kidding me? That's pretty darn good.”

Luke Gohmann led the victors with 17 and nailed four triples. Cobie Barnes had 14 — all in the first half — and Evan Nichols added 10.       [side note on Barnes - battled leg cramps most of the 4th Q]

“Luke was huge again all night for us,” Sturgeon said of his senior forward. “Luke and Cobie were pretty dang good tonight and Evan Nichols was an absolute superstar tonight. We do not win that game without him playing big time.”

The Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1 HHC) trailed by as many as 15 and battled back to send the game to and extra frame. Sean East paced all scorers with 19 while Romeo Langford added 15.

“Floyd has a lot of experience and this is a tough place to play,” New Albany head coach Jim Shannon said. “They had a great game plan and worked it well and deserved to win the game. I think we deserved to win it too. Heck, it went to overtime and a last-second shot. You have to credit Floyd tonight and we had beaten them 20 straight, so now we have to take it and handle some adversity.”

The Highlanders (4-0, 1-0) had the final possession of regulation but Matt Weimer's shot in the lane was partially blocked and the game went to an extra four minutes. Weimer again got a shot attempt with 10 seconds left in overtime and cashed in what proved to be the game winner.

“I was being overplayed, so I went back door and Evan hit me and I just put it in the basket,” Weimer said of his only field goal of the game. “This win is so big for our seniors, our program and everybody in the community. We've all worked so hard for a win like this going back to sixth grade with Coach Eades and my dad.”

New Albany had two final 3-point attempts to win it, but both Langford's and Trey Hourigan's attempts rimmed off in the game's final possession.

“Romeo was sick this week and didn't practice with us Tuesday or Wednesday due to strep throat,” Shannon said. “I thought he played fine, but you could tell he didn't quite have his legs completely under him tonight, and if team's are going to put two and three guys on him, we have to have other guys step up.”

The home team forced seven Bulldog turnovers in the first frame and led 14-4 at the first stop. Barnes and combined for 12 in the opening frame.

“We got off to a bad start,” Shannon said. “We were out of sync offensively. We turned it over and just couldn't get it going. Our defense got us going in the second half.”

East quickly proceeded in 12 second-quarter points to pull his squad within 31-24 at the break. The Dogs turned up the pressure and forced five Floyd giveaways in the second period to get back in the game.

“East really stepped up tonight and his some big, deep 3s,” Shannon said, "but we have to have other kids step up besides Langford and East. I don't like to lose, but sometimes you can use a loss to get better and hopefully we'll do that.”

New Albany closed within 38-35 after three periods and tied the game multiple times in the fourth quarter, but never claimed the lead.

“Our ballhandling got a little shaky in the second half, but we kept battling and finished,” Gohmann said. “Coach kept telling us to finish and we finally did.”

New Albany hits the road Saturday night to battle 2017 state runner-up Fort Wayne North at Southport.

“We'll see if we can regroup in the morning, because it's not going to get any easier tomorrow with Fort Wayne North,” Shannon said.

Floyd Central is back in action next Saturday night at rival Providence.

Good lord. The kid is allowed a bad game. Especially after Strep. Have any of you had it? It knocks you on your @$$. There is a reason Gary Harris wasn’t ranked near as high. He wasn’t exclusive to basketball in HS and just didn’t put in the time or get the numbers RL will. He was not a good shooter in HS. He was all projection and the majority of his production was getting to the rim. He wasn’t putting up 3’s against triple teams. RL will be just fine and most likely be a one and done. His size, length, and skill translates. Calm down all

Romeo is good. Hope he comes to IU. But he's not a 1 and done.

I agree. I didn’t see the game last night and I’m not basing any of my opinion on that. Romeo is a really, really good player. I’ve seen him play 3-4 times (scored close to 40 one time) in person and watched all of his highlights.

Usually when you watch a OAD play you get that vibe like, “WOW, this guy is going to the league no doubt.” I don’t get that feeling with Romeo.

Don’t get me wrong, I want Romeo to come to IU. But if he’s projected lottery after his freshman year I’ll be shocked. If I’m wrong, I’ll gladly eat crow.
