Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

A bit off topic but how many players in Sampson's second year would've been academically ineligible? I thought there were several who weren't going to qualify

That's hard to say. 19 f's could mean 3 guys with all f's and a couple with 1. We know of 3 players who didn't play D1 again, right? Excluding those going pro.

I think it's probably a toss-up. I live in Maryland and can tell you that up until this year Turgeon's seat was just as hot, if not hotter than Crean's. So, while it's been a great year for them, it's really his first good year at UMD.

Similar to Crean, he needs to develop some consistency. They lose Wells, which will be huge, but they also have a really good transfer that's had to sit out this year, and they're a finalist for Diamond Stone.

One thing I'm interested to see from them next year, I believe they're 8-0 this year in games decided by 5 points or less. Is that a sign of really good coaching, or is that a team that's caught a little lightening in a bottle? They've had a couple buzzer beater type wins in those 8 games too. Make that 8-0 something like 4-4 and they're right back in the pack with MSU, Purdue, OSU, etc.

Do u guys think Turgeon is a better coach than Crean? This isnt an anti-Crean remark, just wondering if its Turgeon or his players making them look good? Or both?

one cannot exclude good coaching as something to consider but I believe more that it is wells and Trimble. Both are very competitive and good in clutch time. We only have Yogi that is that way and even he has struggled in crunch time lately

Agree! To add to my post, several of the "5 points or less" games they won were against the likes of PSU and NW and many were at home. If the ball bounces a different way or so,e calls go the other way, their season looks a lot different. Those close wins do show toughness though, which this Maryland team has a lot of, but can Turgeon sustain that without Dez Wells and Trimble? Maybe he can, maybe he can't, we'll find out.

I'd say it would be quite the accomplishment if three guys had all f's then I would think back to my first roommate and take that back

Meh, not that big of an accomplishment. Bob Huggins Cincy teams did it multiple times.

I truly believe that reason for late struggles in crunch time are opposing teams or more focused and tuned in on him because right now there isn't anyone else that's "clutch" on this roster.

If this is indeed a hint, Stevens would not be smart to go to N.Carolina preceding them potentially being hammered by the NCAA in the time to come. Many expect a stiffer ruling than Syracuses recent punishment.

I was under the impression Duke would be the ones that wanted him. UNC seemed like a better for Shaka.
