Are they supposed to? No.

Will anyone stop them? Also no.

“Them” appears to be the money tree at Texas Tech btw.

Will say this much, Sorsby is miles better than Behren Morton.

This would be a massive get

Ohio State thinks it’s done.  Oregon thinks they’ve got him.

You’re right this would be a statement maker on the defensive end.

From an excitement level so far, it’s  QB1 (Hoover) Marsh and Koi for me at the top.

That is stone nuts. Overpaying for a Sorsby feels pretty dicey, overplaying close to that just feels indefensible if you aren’t playing for a Natty at the end of the line.

Question, because I don’t know really get the mechanics of this stuff: can they structure these deals with performance incentives or is that outside of how NIL as it is now works?

FWIW my understanding is:

NIL - No, can't be tied to playing or even enrollment.  The only thing I think they do is put in stuff like local appearance requirements, so if I player transfers they aren't around for these and the player doesn't keep getting paid.
Rev Share - Yes, this can have playing performance incentives and penalties.

Eyeballing our roster we're maybe 2/3 rev share 1/3 NIL this season, perhaps moving closer to 50/50 next season.  I don't know what players' agents are able to negotiate, I'd guess it's pretty player friendly given how competitive the market is for top players.

But overall, the more I read about this and talk with some people, I don't think any serious program cares much about any "rules."

If you learn or hear more about how the nature of player contracts, let me know, it's interesting and info is hard to come by.

The Sorsby mystery for me is why they’d set the market with him as opposed to anyone else. Seems they’re going to pay All-American prices for a guy who may be 2nd-team all-conference or honorable mention.

If the wheel spins, you’ve got the cash, and he’s the last good guy left? Yeah, pay up. But splashing out early surprises me a bit.

Zyn reporting that we’re trying to get Marsh to commit today. And a duo that’s already committed is trying to help. Hoover and Turbo/Schott?

It should come as absolutely zero surprise that our staff, which is beyond extraordinarily excellent, has all of their best scenarios lined up when they had a 3 1/2 week bye period to get a job done.

That having been said, wow.

Reasonable to assume Marsh and the UT kid are an either/or proposition, correct?

I’m sure the money’s not nothing, but it sounds like Leavitt has a really good relationship with Will Stein that’s helping a lot. Not sure what kind of discount that gets you these days lol.

Actually read a article a few months ago, 20 anonymous high school recruits, and didn't link the schools to them. They revealed their top offer and whether they had went to the school with the top offer. As I recall, over half had passed on the highest offer. Now, I'm betting if they were being offered $600K they were not passing that up for $250K somewhere else, but a lot of them are looking at fit, relationships with coaches, general managers and etc., and other factors as they make their decisions.

At the end of the article they did have a list of the schools that had been the recruits highest offer, and it had been IU in one case.

Zyn seemed to think so. That’s an expensive WR room with one of those 2 + returnees and some young bucks (Bond, Chandler) waiting in the wings.

I wouldn't. And it might be that Hoover and Livingstone are a bit of a package deal.

Re: paying QBs…To be clear I’m all for doing what you gotta do but I’ll tell you what, whoever signs off on giving Sorsby the $5mil he’s reportedly after is playing a dangerous game. That’s an insane number.

Insane? Yes?

Dangerous?  Who knows.

If a program has a billionaire benefactor that says “I’ll pay whatever you need for a top flight QB” does it really matter to him if that number turns out to be 2 or 5 million?
The worst part is that the market is being set by whichever team is willing to pay the most (just like MLB).

Right. I agree with the “a guy is worth what the market will pay” part. I just don’t think Sorsby is that good. If Sorsby is worth 5, Fernando is worth 20 in hindsight imo.

Livingstone as a backup option (freshman who produced at Texas) for Indiana football is a wild thing.
