Puerto Rico Trip 8/5 - 8/12

This is a 95% accurate transcription of DDV's responses to the first few questions:

  • "This was a great trip for us. These last two games we learned a lot. We had two opportunities against a really good team. Unfortunately both games played out very similar where we gave up big leads and then had to fight back, but I love the resiliency. I love that we stuck with it til we found a little crack and were able to take advantage of it. And there were plenty of learnings as to why we were down in both games as well. So there's positives and negatives which is what these trips are for - they're great learning opportunities for us to grow from. Now we get to go home, take a couple weeks off. As a staff, we got some great film, some great data to work with as we now begin the fall workouts and get ready ultimately for our season."

  • "It took us a long time to get going tonight. It was a little slow getting out of the gate. But again I thought the guys just found ways - and most of it was on the defensive end - we started to string stops together, that got us some advantages on the offensive end, we were able to get into transition. Did a much better job in the 2nd half of getting to the FT line. Much more physical, offensive rebounding, driving, getting to the paint more. Lamar went on that run in the 2nd half - two games in a row he's really sparked us in the 2nd half. Awesome for us, love the fact we came out with a win and guys made some really big plays for us down the stretch."

  • "We didn't have much movement in the first half. We weren't as crisp, weren't making their pieces move and chase us as much so they could stand around our shooters way too much especially in the first half. Once we got into some actions and things, getting guys on the move, we were able to create, more space, set some pindowns for Lamar when they lost him on the weakside. Lamar and Tucker have to be more aggressive to get their offense going."

  • "I haven't seen the shot charts yet but last few games, I think stylistically we're playing how we want to play. When we get fatigued, we've got to continue to fight and most of that comes back to that movement. Being able to give yourself up with a cut or a screen so we can get someone an open shot. On offense need to continue getting better at that. Our defense wasn't quite as sharp tonight."

Also said you could see the team connecting and growing together this week. Said Mega did a good job preparing for the second game. Some things that worked Saturday weren't working today. We didn't practice or anything in between those games. Guys did a nice job in second half with defensive adjustments, even things they hadn't worked on much. Started switching 5 ways with our bigs, those guys did a really good job sitting down staying in front of guards, guards did a good job fighting in the post and not allowing easy entries.

maybe Andrej will surprise us like Alex

Yep. W/O seeing Andrej, it doesn't yet look like IU has a wasted roster spot. That is an improvement in itself from previous years.

Ristic looks like he can play a bit, even for a kid who hadn't really practiced with the team much at all. Good to see that there will be a little depth on this year's team.

Honestly, it would be nice if Andrej could actually give them a few minutes here and there. Front court depth could really be an issue with this team.

Obviously can't look too far into these exhibition games, but given the nature of the last two, interesting to see Harris with a DNP and Miles playing very limited minutes. Even less than Alex in this last one. Really hope those two continue growing through the fall. Maybe Miles is a good enough rebounder to see the court early on and earn a spot in the rotation. Maybe Alex will crack it.

IMO seems like our most likely top 8 will be: Bailey, Alexis, Tucker, Wilkerson, Conerway, Enright, Dorn, Sisley.

Some extra game snippets for y'all. These are for those who 'are not convinced',  because they consist of Mega Superbet players making shot after shot! See link for the Mega Superbet Insta page - hit their daily insta story red-circled emblem for about ten extra interspersed game clips.

The last screen shows the final score and the IU win - Mega Superbet fans are also not convinced.

Alexis and Bailey played about 25 min each tonight - so they played together a decent amount. Harris DNP - is that coach's decision, or is there an injury there?

Miles only played 10 minutes, but he was on the floor for IU's last offensive possession.

Obviously, Stephens should shoot all of our 3's

Kidding aside, gotta love the assists numbers across the team and balanced scoring. And 71-41 ratio's not bad

Understanding that: It's early, only exhibitions and still missing 3 scholarship players.... but there does seem to be a clear top 9.

Enright, Conerway, Wilkerson, DeVries, Bailey, Alexis, Sisley, Ristic & Miles. 6 Seniors, 1 Jr & 2 Fr.
