Coaching carousel thread

I’m not sure how successful he will be at Iowa. With their issues with NIL, he will be at a consistent talent deficit. He won’t be winning the conference or going deep in the tournament with a consistently undermanned roster compared to the top of the conference.

And it's much more difficult to coach against Matt Painter, Dusty May, Tom Izzo, Mick Cronin, Dana Altman, Chris Collins, Greg Gard, Brad Underwood, and even Eric Musselman, Steve Pikiell, and Fred Hoiberg than it is to coach against the D2 coaches and Archie Miller's of the world in mid-majors.

Think we see a program that doesn’t try to compete on talent but instead goes for something similar to the Bo Ryan model where you have very disciplined players that know their defined role in a broader system, maybe with a few special talents sprinkled in depending on the year. Just like Drake, i believe it will be more teams that are greater than just the sum if their parts.

I dont know if it would work at IU but I think it will at Iowa.

Norlander -

Sean Miller is leaving Xavier and will be the next coach at Texas, a source confirmed to @CBSSports. The Austin American-Stateman's @CedGolden was the first to report the development.

Definitely a hot name for that job

That’s fine, but one of the defining qualities of those teams is continuity. Think of all the big men that red shirted and developed for a couple years under Ryan. It’s actually tougher to do that today. Ask Tony Bennett.

Ironically, it’s easier to do that at a place like IU that can pay to keep players around 4 years. Iowa is gonna develop guys for 2 or 3 years and risk seeing them run off right when the team should be peaking. Alternatively you can hope to have the eye for talent like Greg Gard, who has done a nice job of filling in holes with MM guys who pop like Klesmitt and Tonje even though they don’t have the most money.

Portal opening tomorrow really seems to mean the early carousel moves faster. Surely there will still be some motion later (Rick Barnes retiring? Etc.) but no one wants to be left without a coach tomorrow.

Dang was hoping he would stay away from Iowa.   One thing is for certain we are going to get an upclose view of who made the right choice.  Dolson or Iowa.

What if it wasn’t either schools choice? DeVries obviously chose IU over Iowa.  He was Iowa’s number one choice.  No one knows if IU picked DeVries over McCollum.  Most say McCollum favored Iowa.  You can’t hold it against Dolson if McCollum said no.

also Minnesota about to hire Niko Medved, soon. The cheap wins won’t be as cheap going forward.

Fran has had Iowa very respectable over his stretch.  Seeing what McCollum can do will be interesting.

he’s gonna win a lot I think. But the B1G will be a gauntlet with the level of athlete he’s used to.  Danny Sprinkle comes to mind.
