That’s a good job for him. He may have enough money to bring Dent and Washington with him, though Dent might turn into quite the little bidding war.

I wonder if it’s a good move for Xavier. He was bad at Minny, sometimes comically, over 8 years. Has done very well the past 2. How much of that is players - lightning in a bottle? Miller to Pitino looks like a real downgrade to me, but interested to see if the past 2 seasons are a reflection of his coaching, or not

I think Pitino is a better coach than he gets credit for. Minnesota is a millstone job imo. The only coach in my lifetime that was successful there cheated and got caught. Nobody else has been successful. In today’s climate it doesn’t get the NIL necessary to be competitive either, so it’s still a bad job. Pitino can do well at Xavier imo. And the game vs St John’s will be must see tv imo. Doesn’t mean he will go to a final four, but nobody else at Xavier was getting there either.

Pitino Jr. was at Minny for eight years. Had three seasons of at least 22 wins. Won B1G Coach of the Year once. Two NCAA appearances and an NIT championship.

The last two years there were bad, but his tenure there was not "comically bad," and it's probably more accurate to say that he overperformed at Minnesota.

Very good hire. Richard Pitino is an excellent coach who was put in an almost impossible situation to succeed at Minnesota....and he had some decent to really good years there for Minnesota standards. Guy won the NIT at 31 years old.

Hmm, disagree. I said sometimes comically, and it was. His record sounds like Crean. Would have been badly disappointed if IU had hired him, but that was never going to happen

His record sounds like Crean's, but at Minnesota?

He didn't have as good a record there as Crean did at IU, but that's pretty dang good at Minnesota.

Definitely interested to see how he does at X. I’m not convinced he’s very good, but he was young and did just do very well the past two seasons, and X gets good players

Will be fun to see how it turns out, if he’s growing into his father’s shoes X will be very good

As long as X remains committed to keeping a competitive NIL pool, he will do extremely well there.

He had as much success at Minnesota as anyone has. The program has only been to 14 NCAA tournaments ever and the only momentum they had toward any somewhat real or sustained success was killed by the Clemson Haskins era scandal.

Will be interesting to see how Pitino does in a better setting.

Norlander moments ago -

West Virginia is hiring North Texas coach Ross Hodge on a five-year contract, sources tell CBS Sports. The deal will be officially announced soon. Hodge's UNT team is still playing in the NIT. Hodge has ties to WVU AD Wren Baker, who was at UNT before getting to WVU.

Will be interesting to see how this goes. Thought 1 of the interesting things about Dolson’s search was their attempt to quantify and distinguish building a program and sort of inheriting one. Hodge was at UNT with McCasland as an Asst so he had a hand in building that thing. But those are very different roles and by the time he actually took it over that deal was rolling pretty good.

So, after all the whining they did about tampering, they went and talked to a coach with a team still playing?
